Discussion: 2015 AR schedule

MHtrailvet:
I have cobbled together a list of most of the US/NA races that have dates announced so far for 2015. I'm sure there are omissions/errors. I didn't spend much time investigating other countries and didn't include sprint-only races. Let me know what I messed up or left out, if desired.

I'll add two more in California from All Out Events in case the rest of you guys want to plan a Cali trip.

May 9, their very fun annual 12 hour AR. It seems like it will be in Santa Barbara again this year.

June 6/7, their new event. It's a 24 hr race out of Bishop, CA, which is a huge climbing mecca. It's 90 miles south of Bridgeport, CA, which is where the 2011 Gold Rush expedition race started from. Eastern Sierras, near Mammoth.

Bonk Hard Racing from MO hasn't announced their 2015 schedule yet, either. not sure how many races they will be hosting but every course they do is worthwhile.

Yishai has a new race in Bishop?

That should be a destination race for anyone in North America. Terrain and ropes will be unbelievable. You'll regret missing this one. Hell, even if you don't race, go there to climb Mt Whitney or Boulder and climb around Bishop.

I checked the typical areas and found these. There are some more that I would expect to see that aren't announced yet (NYARA, Calleva, Soggy Bottom).

I will be putting 2 races on again this year for any of you midwesterners.

May 31 - Olmitz Miner AR - 10-12 hour near Chariton, IA http://ar.attackpoint.org/eventdetail.jsp/event_24...

Nov 7 - Des Moines 9 to 5 AR - Des Moines, IA - 8 hour http://ar.attackpoint.org/eventdetail.jsp/event_24...

My website isn't updated yet, but just set dates and wanted to get it out there. This will be my 3rd year of directing races and hoping to up the number of participants now that we've gotten the hang of putting on a good race.

Thanks for the additions. I only listed 10+ hr races and nothing that was too non-ARy (relays and such), its a slippery slope once you get into the shorter duration events and all the various adventure runs etc.

The most ambitious schedule I have heard of so far is Peak Performance's...

Godzone, Chile, Swaziland, Australia and Brazil

5 ARWS races!!!

arhub:
while we're talking about master lists of Adventure Races in the US/NA, here's my list: http://www.adventureracehub.com/races/

I would greatly appreciate any feedback y'all have!

You'll notice my list is a bit longer. My criteria was any race, regardless of length, so long as it qualified as an adventure race, not an off-road tri, duathlon, etc. My hope is this list will help racers find some of those less-advertised, mom-and-pop style races. NAARS and USARA websites are great for the big, established races, but not so much for the smaller ones.

I don't even want to think about the amount of time this list took me...

ARHub - That list is awesome, thanks. Love the detail and description of each. Well done!!!

MHtrailvet:
Great resource, arhub - Thanks!

That looks very professional and provides helpful information about lots of races in a convenient, functional and aesthetically-pleasing format.

Some might say it lacks the gritty, amateurishly-thrown-together rawness of a list previously posted on this thread, but you can't please everyone.

AR hub looks like it will be a great resource!

I guess Arthur got them some more funds?! Thats a awesome schedule, i think we all wish we had the time/funds to do that! How many ARWS races can count towards ARWS points? 4/5?
Dec 22, 2014 3:35 PM #
afsheen:
arhub, your site with the event list looks great. Thanks for the nice work. Since you asked for feedback, consider having a North America map with the race locations flagged and hyperlinked. But I'm glad to have your webpage as a resource just as it is, too.
Dec 22, 2014 4:37 PM #
arhub:
Afsheen - thanks for the input! If you look at the events page, click on the "view as" option and you can select "map". It will provide a google map overlay of all 145 races I've listed. It's pretty cool! http://www.adventureracehub.com/races/map/

Everyone else, thanks for the compliments! I hope it helps some of the smaller races gain a wider audience. There are some pretty interesting/weird races out there. I found one that incorporates racing through an art exhibit, and a whole series called MedWAR that incorporates wilderness medicine practices throughout the race. Spread the word, grow the sport!

Couple of corrections, arhub:
Most of the AXS races are mis-mapped into Utah, as they are in Colorado.

The Nomad 48 hr AR in Colorado may be canceled. ChelseaLutrall could confirm that for us. But that's what her website says. http://us3.campaign-archive1.com/?u=115800d7be64e1...
Dec 22, 2014 7:01 PM #
arhub:
got it, thanks. I was wondering why the utah races seemed a bit off.

Fingers crossed on Nomad 48. I saw her message earlier, but figured I'd throw it on the map. I'll pull it off for now.
Dec 22, 2014 7:52 PM #
MHtrailvet:
The Nomad 48 and Untamed New England are not planned for 2015. I thought I heard Expedition Idaho was a no-go, too, but I'm not sure where/if I got that info.

Also dates for GMARA Bitter Pill or NYARA The Longest Day have not been released, to my knowledge, unless you have heard otherwise, arhub, - thanks!
Dec 22, 2014 7:59 PM #
britty327:
I don't think the Odyssey XTreme is a go this year. Untamed should have a 24 hour race. Also, Rev3 is planning a Nov race in Georia, the Bartrams Wildwood Epic 26hr.

Dec 22, 2014 8:58 PM #
arhub:
Dang, bummer about Untamed. For a lot of the races where the dates were not released yet, I merely kept the race scheduled for the same weekend, until the race director declares an official date. It was as good a starting point as anything else. But now that I've got some help... we'll all have a much more accurate race directory!

Any volunteers to head to to Arizona of New Mexico and open a few races? It's looking pretty empty down in the South West.

Very interested in making it up there but might have trouble fitting it in.

does anyone know if Bushwacker's AR club in NC is still alive? It looks like they haven't hosted a race in over a year. Also, does Trail Blazers still host races?

I raced with both of those clubs back when I lived in the South. Shame to see them having to close up shop.
Jan 2, 2015 3:24 PM #
falltl4:
Trailblazers was meant to run a race in december, but low numbers kept them from doing it. It's postponed for this spring, if they can't get the numbers, I think they'll close up. No clue about Don and Patrick at Bushwhack, they used to post races here, but haven't heard about a race from them in ages. Looks like those old-school races are faltering in the Southeast.

I hope Don and Pat keep Bushwack going, I had a blast with their races. If they do fold up, hopefully NCARs and the SOAR will pick up their racers and keep the Carolina scene alive.

On the bright side, looks like a new race called The Hogback is launching in TN this summer: http://thehogback.com/

Hi arhub,
We're active down here in NM but we only host short 4-6 hr sprint AR. The Too Cool folks from TX are putting on a 12 hour race in Glorietta, NM on Sept 5th. You've got a couple of their TX-based races listed on your calendar. Here's a link that provides a tease of info: http://toocoolracing.com/guts-glory-15/

Comment for arhub:
Take all the races that have not been confirmed off your calendar. If you want you can put them in a separate location so that they are still listed but it is clear that they are unconfirmed. Your calendar looks poorly put together when there are races on there that are not being held this year. It makes me wonder what other information on the site is inaccurate and I therefore no longer trust any of it and have to verify all of it myself anyway. The assumption that every race occurs every year on the same weekend is a bad assumption.

I just was reviewing and both the Brake the Habit in MD and Odyssey One Day Xtreme are not being held this year yet you have them on the calendar.

Add Untamed NE and Lionheart to that list. I also don't see anything to confirm any of the Grassroots Racing Races in Western PA.

Also the Delmarva race has the wrong date. It should be August 29 (announced via email)

arhub, let me just say you are doing an awesome job. When trying to put together our 2015 race schedule, I ran into the same frustrations as you. 1, finding races and 2, trying to figure out how far they were from us. Thank you very much for putting together the map, it is great.

I just found out about a new race in Florida, the 36-hour Cauldron: http://offthegridracing.com/cauldron

I have no affiliation with this race or the director, I just wanted to pass it along.

mayer22:
Understood arhub. I may have been a little harsh as this is clearly an altruistic endeavor for you. If it is truly to be a useful tool for others though having false information on there may be a poor choice. My prior suggestion of creating a separate page may be a bit too much work but maybe have somewhere in the Title of the race or at the very top of the details UNCONFIRMED if it has not been officially announced yet. That way people are aware of the race but they know it isn't yet official and won't plan on it happening yet.

Just trying to help make this a successful and useful tool for others.

Thanks for all your effort!

Mayer22 - No worries, mate. I took your advice and tried to label as many as I could that are still unconfirmed as "Pending". Probably missed a few, but I try to review the calendar once a week. It certainly has been an educational process for me!

awesome, thanks for the help. I'm super pumped to see the IRVOC-Bushwacker and the Boy Scout races, those are the small-market, lesser-known races that I'm trying to help illuminate to the rest of the community. I'm especially pumped about the Boy Scout one, as an old Eagle Scout myself. Bummer about the Bonk Hard series.
