Rochester A-Meet: Blue Day 1

1. Started off quick then realized technical area so slowed down. As I approached the control I saw Ken Walker leaving. He must have messed up.
2. Followed others
+01:30
Down hill to trail. Ken Walker jr up ahead. Tim Good between me and Ken. I followed them down the trail. They cut in. I cut in and couldn't see them. Hadn't been paying enough attention to where we cut in. Went to far east and floundered
3. Followed by others
West Point guy following me.
4. Followed by others
West Point still following me.
5. Followed by others
West Point right behind me still.
6. Followed by others

West Point went straight. I contoured around. Came to ditch and didn't see it. After a lot of floundering it turns out that the control was tucked around the corner of the ditch. I don't think it could be see from down low. Led two west pointers to control.
7. Hesitated
+00:15
hesitated right by control.
8. Caught Rick Dewitt. He said he wasn't haven't a great day.
9. Stopped for Water, West point guy ran ahead of me. He cut into the woods to soon. Down the correct spur and into the control.
10. Did not like map
+00:30
Ran low along stream. crappy running, muddy and lots of tall brush, Better to have stayed high. Crossed stream and up hill through green. Cut in at field by trail but apparently it wasn't the correct field. Had to go by a lot of reentrants to get the right one. Hesitated alot.
11. +02:00Took the low route. down stream running was ok even though map showed slash. Crossed stream and didn't see trail even though I was looking for blazes. Crossed green area and saw trail on far side. Trail consisted of blazes. Not really much of trail. apparently I missed a trail junction and ended up on trail crossing stream. Lost time wondering what to do. go back and look for trail or start climbing. I started climbing. Side of hill was really steep and hard to walk. Couldn't run even if I had the energy. Hit the control ok. Knowing how bad lower route was I would recommend the upper route now.

Went Straight ish. Running was ok but I was getting tired. Hit road by clearing. Decided to take trail by off clearing so I would know where by the lake I would be. $%##@?? There wasn't a trail. what used to be a trail is now an overgrown ahead (rough open with lots of hitchhikers).
13. +00:15There were a lot of clearings similiar to the actual one. Hesitant as to which was correct one. Actual clearing wasn't much of a clearing. It was a big pine tree.
14. Down trail. Stopped for water. Mark Voight passed me. Down trail to road, contoured to control.
15. Did not like map
Mark bolts down the hill. I decided better to contour around. Didn't see high trail option. Hill is steep and tough to contour. I drop down then cut back up, across plateau, by reetrant and into trail.
16. Contour again. My feet hurt, 3 contours legs in a row. I was a speck high, confused by all the flat areas. Thought they may be the marsh or ponds. Decided I was to high. Dropped down. Found two ditches. climbed back up to control.
17. Down road, past culverts and cut into woods. Reentrants steeper than I expected. Legs getting really tired. Mark Voight passed me again.
18. Tired
+06:00
Legs cramped up. Sat in bottom of stream writhing in pain trying to massage cramps out. finally could stand up again and walked up to control.
19. Tired
+01:00
Walked to 19
20. Tired
+09:00
Walked to trail. Started jogging some again. Took trail until I could see road. Cut over to road and ran to high ground. Turns out high ground was in out of bounds area. Opps. Tim Good and Rick Dewitt also there. After a bunch of floundering, decided to bail out to the west. Found out where I was and walked to control.
21. Tired
+01:00
walked/jogged to control
F. Tired
+00:30
jogged in. Lost 16 minutes to Mark Voight in last 5 controls.
