Race Evaluation

US Relay Champs: Green

Spike

1. My plan was to run roads and trails (except for downhill trails). I'd walk if the footing was rough or off trail. With that strategy in mind, I'd be looking for trail routes. I was able to slowly run almost the entire way to 1.
2. Something seemed a bit odd here. I passed the three cliffs that look to be a line above the control. But, the control wasn't below me. I was obviously in the correct reentrant, so I looked to my left and saw the bag. I think I saw Eddie B. around the control. He had finished his course (just behind Mook!) and must have been checking out the area. I'm guessing Eddie missed the control and was taking a look.
3.
4. I made a small boom -- went beyond the control and had to run back
5. I took a pretty careful look at the leg. The route going to the left using trails (and maybe even the road) looked good, but I suspected there might be a straighter route that could be better. So, I took a good look. I didn't see a better route, so I went around to the left. Except for the downhill sections of the trail, I was able to run the entire leg. I even ran the last bit in to the control (which is off trail).
6. Normally, I'd go fairly straight on this leg, using the trail along the way. But, my strategy was to look for trail routes. I went up to the trail (left of the line).
7. I took a awkward trail route (wide to the right and then attacking the control from the north).
8. Running in the bare rock stream bed was pretty cool. When I got near 8, I saw someone (not sure who) leaving the control.
9. I climbed from 8, to the trail, then came to 9 from above. I got ahead of the guy who was just ahead of me.
10. I wanted to beat the guy I was with in. I figured I had to get ahead of him and couldn't leave it for a finish chute sprint. So, I ran to 10 even though the footing was a bit rough.
11.
F. I glanced back and was glad I'd stayed ahead of the guy I caught at 9. I shuffled the finish chute and was happy to have finished.
