Race Evaluation

Mt. Penn - Pagoda: Red

Spike

1.
2. I planned to go straight. I drifted a bit downhill -- looking for easier running. I stayed on the trail until I was almost due north of the control circle. Cutting through the green area a bit earlier would have been faster.
3.
4.
5. I used the trails heading up the hill under the line and then going left of the line. I was moving slowly up the hill. I saw Peggy heading east on the trail along the hillside (on her way to 2). I saw Snorkel (aka Dan Meenehan) on his way to 6 as I got near 5.
6. There were a bunch of people milling around the control circle.
7.
8. I decided to use the old road (or railroad?) bed that goes left of the line. It probably cost me a bit of time since the footing wasn't very good.
9.
10. BOOM! My plan was to go straight. I went straight. But, when I came to the second trail I thought I'd drifted up hill to the trail junction to the right of the straight line. Actually, I was at the trail junction just left of the straight line. I kept going straight, looking for the boulders. I saw boulders and figured I was ok. But then I saw a ditch. Whoops. I was able to relocated quickly and followed the ditch up the hill to the trail and then attacked the control. I probably lost a couple of seconds standing still to look at the map and a bit more time because I was running in green rather than on a trail.
11. I saw someone running straight to 11. I took the trail. I gained a lot of ground.
12.
13. I struggled a lot on the downhill from 11 to 12 and from 12 to the road. When I hit the road, I decided to take it rather than go straight. Looking at the split times, I don't think it cost more than a couple of seconds to go so far out of the way. A straight route was about 225 meters. My route was a bit over 450. You'd think I'd lose a lot of time. I was 18 seconds slower than Peter on the leg. Given that it was downhill (not my strength compared to Peter), I'm satisfied with my route choice. Mary was at the control when I arrived.
14.
15. I spent a few seconds looking at the leg before I left 14 (keep in mind that I almost never plan ahead). I thought about taking the road. But, the road didn't look better than taking the trails a bit left of the straight line.
16.
17. I went to the trail. I saw Snorkel leaving 17.
