Race Evaluation

DVOA Fair Hill, Mid-atlantic champs: Sprint Course #4

Nadim

1. Time Lost: 00:15With 4 side-by side starts for 4 courses, runners were starting about 15 seconds apart. There were lots of people going everywhere. As usual, there was much speculation on the first control. Some seemed to go straight, right, then left. I and others thought there must have been some more controls. Watching didn't help me on the leg but let me rest for 15 minutes after running the 9.3K Blue course. I decided to go around the mess on the direct route, not seeing the way to the left at all. I would have done okay without the green to slow me down but I lost contact at the top of the rise. Only after seeing the road near the control did I know where to go.
2. I recalled a previous sprint leg here that was very similar. I ran the same route but should have taken the second trail, not the first, for the shorter route.
3. Time Lost: 00:05As I left #2, I was surprised to see Ted Good having already made up the stagger on me. I accelerated and we ran a close pace. I got there just ahead of him but fumbled the punch. I let him go ahead.
4. Ted was running downhill a bit faster than I. We went through the white patch of woods but I was pretty confident of where to go as Ted slowed. Perhaps he slowed to look ahead. He still punched first.
5. I just chased Ted going straight there.
6. Ted led at first but I was surprised that he wanted to climb the steepest part of the hill. I went around to the left knowing that I just had to turn up to the fence. I got ahead.
7. I left this one pretty quick and went right to it.
8. I was hesitant on this one going straight. Perhaps it was because I'd been making so many bearing errors on courses lately. Ted caught up but I got there first.
9. I decided right away to go to the left side so I didn't lose anything with having to turn. I think the bag was down on this one when I got there. Either Ted or I picked it up.
10. Ted accelerated going down the hill and caught up. I redoubled my effort and stayed ahead. Later after the race, Ted told me that I was leaving him on all the hills but he was going faster down them all. I think it's because I haven't been doing speedwork or running downhill fast in training--that's because of my knee. The cycling for much of the summer also makes me a better climber.
11. I ran pretty straight and as I neared the woods, I looked for the trailhead. A train of people were using the trail but going to different controls. I passed Kathleen Lennon just before punching, and still just ahead of Ted.
12. I didn't take time to read the map enough. I ran out on bearing mostly and slowed when I didn't see it. Tim Good and so others were standing on a horse jump and I went left around it. There was no bag at the end but I saw the epunches.
