Race Evaluation

SVO Pine Grove Furnace: Red

1. Bad map reading
+04:00
Watched Don Davis head the correct way to the control, but then didn't really orient my map when I started, and headed instead for the bridge to the southwest. Didn't realize my error until I saw the lake...and I didn't feel like going back and doing it right. So, headed down the road, crossed the creeks just before they joined, and took the trail that went around the hill. Cut through the flat area just east of the hill, which was slow due to high ferns. Once I hit the first e-w trail, I was on trails almost the rest of the way. Thought I was looking for a spur until just before I found the control.
2. Came to first bridge control, knew it wasn't mine, decided to cut across the woods instead of trailing all the way around. Control visible from the trail.
3. Straight up the hill on a bearing of some sort; went just south of the terrace due west of the control. Area felled and no real features to read so I was wary. Saw Sandy F. to my right wandering; she saw me and I heard her say my name to someone else, something like "Peggy will find it;" I wasn't that confident but a few steps later I saw it up ahead to my right. As I left it, Sandy came in, saying "We are very impressed," and I said there was a lot of luck involved. Sandy led Marit Davis and, behind her, Don (who said "that's cheating!").
4. Rough compass to the trail; hit the small reentrant SE of the field just before the trail. Came out at an unmapped junction but I knew I had to turn uphill. Saw the manmade object and thought, hmm, there's a neat manmade object, then realized that's what I was looking for and saw the control.
5. Back down the trail, cut off at the junctin and rough compass down the hill to the road. Took the road all the way to the small trail that led to the cabin, then up the road to the bend. Up the reentrant. Plannded to go along the ditch/indistinct trail but was a bit too far west to see them. When the side of the reentrant started getting steep, I decided to go SW on a bearing and be careful, looking around a lot. Saw a terrace just above me and was very excited! But, no control. Figured it must be the control NNE of the control, so headed up on a bearing. Hit the reentrant just east, turned, took a few steps and saw the control.
6. To the trail, down to the vague junction with the dot knoll in between. Headed over on the contour. Hit one of the two terraces along the way, then the first stream and the marshs. Saw the control up ahead.
7. Headed uphill; about halfway to the road I heard then saw Don Davis coming along the hill. He was too high; I didn't give anything away but he quickly figured out and went downhill. When I hit the ditch I went along it so I would have a distinct attack point from the road. From there, I walked the rest of the way on a careful compass bearing, looking around a lot. Saw the terrace/control off to my right.
8. Another compass leg. I am notoriously bad at compass work, so I was happy for the chance to train this skill, and I was being very careful. Spiked the control and was both very happy and rather surprised.
9. +01:30Tried the compass thing again, drifted left again. Came to a terrace, but didn't see on near my line. Went a bit further and saw a pit and knew exactly where I was, just before the trail. Took a bearing but wasn't careful enough, missing to the right and coming to the (unmapped) trail along the ridgeline. Just to be sure, I took it back nearly to the top of the hill, then went through the saddle to the control.
10. Bearing, drifted left atain and hit the terrace just below the first big depression (with a control on it). That was a great attack point.
11. Rather blindly downhill through the cabin area. Unmapped terrace just over the first road. When I came to the lip of the big reentrant, I stopped for several seconds pondering the steep drop. Then committed, and went down some of the hill on my butt. Wasted more time at the top nearly within sight of the control when, out of tiredness, I just stood there saying, it should be right over there. Took a few steps, and it was right over there.
12. Nearly fell down the hill as I was too tired to run well along the little unmapped trail... Went west around the lake using the road, trail, picnic area and the highly populated beach. Knew the control was at the bottom of the hill so ran around on the big trail.
F. When did they put up those volleyball nets? Good, tough course. Nice challenge.
