Unspecified race (Wilderness Traverse) 26 [4]

Wilderness Traverse 2012 Bala
Great race with the Boys from W-Town - "Moyrose Place"

Raced with my brother - Andrew and two great friends - Davey and Johnny that live directly across the street from me. Expectations were to hit all cut offs and complete full course and finish in the top 10.

First section: Paddle / portage / slogging over beaver dams and low water was fun. great day for a paddle. no issues. moved well enough that we were not being left behind. keeping it close so if mistakes were made by other teams in the race we had the chance to capitilize. we picked decent boats and portaging was as good as expected.

Second section: on foot. we had a smooth TA1/CP3 and then hit the trail running. verfiyied that CP2 (that we hit on the paddle) was just 50 meters up the trail and we were off the the next CP. while moving well thru the bush - i lost the map (while trying to eat) we doubled back on back bearing and found it! sweet. ok back to moving well again when this odd feeling in my stomach slowly crept up on me as i dropped to my knees
"guys we forgot about CP4!" in the excitement of everything we forgot that CP2 was also CP4. after confirming CP2 on foot and preparing for our overland trek to CP5 we never punched in. we thought about going back which would have been approx 3 hour round trip then decided not to. our first goal was to make all cut offs and we did not want to miss the cut off. we decided to do our race and keep on moving along the course. we thought maybe we get a time penalty (as CP4 meters from where we were) but knew that ultimatley we would finish unranked. after more 'crying' we pushed on and had a good section. nice nav Andrew.

Section three: bike! catching a couple of hours of day light was great. the trail was fast and super fun - specically the trail under the power lines. great job on Johnny for hammering and leading the way. one broken chain was our only set back. Adrenaline passed us and we figured Beowulf was on our tail as they were also in the TA when we left - we did not know that they had withdrawn. we then passed Adrenaline as they blew a tire. we hit CP9 (cut off point) with over two hours to spare. the choice to not return to CP4 to punch in paid off and we were off the finish the full course. we arrived at the next TA in 6th place.

Section 4: night trek. we all threw on an extra layer and with in 10 minutes of trekking we all took off that extra layer. moved well thru the bush. hit go home lake road then took the road on the north side of the musquash river down to the marina to this foot bridge and actually looked for the CP! shortly after that we realized we were at the marina at potters landing and had to double back and then hit CP 11 - 25 minutes wasted (total brain lapse) team adrenaline was closing. our trek to CP 12 was fun and good. couple of foot repairs on andrew and we were set. CP 12 was a bit tricky but with some team discussion we hit it bang on! we never heard or saw another team. good job guys. the rest of the trek was really enjoyable as we watched the sun rise. a little bit of towing and pack-carrying in order to move together as we could almost taste the cold beer waiting for us.

thanks for the food at CP 12. those sugar cookies were amazing! we left in 5th place.

Section 5 : bike to paddle - fairly straight forward and again lots of fun. nice drafting. got off the bike and had a nice early morning paddle to the finish line. some sleepy head bobbing moments but expected! Mr and Mrs P were at the take out and walked to the finish line with us! under 26 hours!

so thanks to my team for making the WT 2012 a great race. The bottom line is we finished full course - made the cut offs, and placed in the top 5! Unofficial top that is! - 100meters from CP4 and we forget to go and punch - i can handle that - and thanks boys for handling that as well! great race - post race day at the cottage was also super fun! hats off to Bob and Barb, volunteers and everyone else. see you next year.
