There was a new fast guy added to the group today and it definitely affected the speed in the faster direction. Even though I was alone in climbing (because they were all in front of me), I actually cut 1:22 off my climb time on Ladera from last week!! Super happy about it. We kept going this time to make it a loop and the views were incredible on the way down. TE 4.4

Note

I think that the Catalina race last week was a serious "overdoing it" day. It was a race, so whatever, but I'm still feeling the effects on my abs and my left leg/glute even a week later. I initially felt bad taking several extra days off last week with just one bike workout, but it was not really a bad thing considering how I'm still feeling this today.

Hike 2:08:44 [3] 6.46 mi (19:56 / mi) +1649ft 16:03 / mi

Hiking with Betsy. Forgot my HRM, but whatever. It was lots of climbing on the way out with lots of steep sections. Glad we did this because our breakfast was big and included maple bacon beignets. Totally worth it. Love living within hours of my cousin. Gotta visit her in the Bay Area soon!

Nice Saturday paddle. Fun to get out and just paddle and enjoy the day. First 2/3 I was paddling in seat 2. The way back I steered. Usually I'm all about the dry changes, but today I said oh what the heck, and I jumped in to go back to 6. It wasn't as hard getting back in as it has been in the past. I'm starting to get better at that!

Work cycling group planned a shorter steeper ride today so Javi could get back earlier, but it didn't end up saving us any time.
Rode out to Toro canyon, to the top and then a few minutes later did Ladera Rd. WOW!! That was a tough climb. It was 0.9 miles with 472 ft of gain (10.65% average). This is the kind of thing that will get me in great climbing shape! Glad it's a segment so I can track it as I go.

Paddle race (Catalina crossing) 6:24:48 intensity: (2:13:27 @0) + (1:29:17 @1) + (2:29:14 @2) + (12:11 @3) + (39 @4) 31.11 mi (12:22 / mi)
ahr:111 max:167

First Catalina crossing. They told us that it would be 27 miles plus a 4 mile warmup to the race start. Actually was 31 miles plus a 4-mile warmup so 35 total miles. So tired! I steered and only came out for 20 minutes which made a big difference. The wind and swells kept taking us to the right so I was on the left pretty much the whole race. My left leg and glute are so sore. Right side is cool. We had a coed team, which was pretty fun. Early in the season I was told that I wouldn't steer for 9-man and definitely not for Catalina, but my AR experience paddling and steering small canoes was enough of a base for me to build up the skill in outrigger. Plus apparently I'm "brave" with steering.
Our group did a great job of staying positive and working together. The swells got pretty big from time to time but it was mostly chop. We did flip once but we recovered fine from it. The weird thing was that it was pretty calm when it happened. I think we let our guard down. There were several times that we popped the ama up but we refocused on where our weight was and got it under control. At the end of the race, it was weird because we had to tie the boats in the harbor and swim to the stairs with all of our stuff including paddles etc.

Road Bike (Toro Canyon Loop) 1:30:55 intensity: (1 @0) + (3:02 @1) + (8:41 @2) + (36:27 @3) + (41:25 @4) + (1:19 @5) 23.06 mi (15.2 mph) +1489ft
ahr:159 max:175

Same route as last week. Almost exactly the same pace, but not as beat up this week. I tried to take it a little easier on the big hill. Maybe having 2 more people helped during the road sections. Last week's TE was 5, and today was only 4.5, so that's cool.

It was still super challenging, though, and I let the guys do 98% of the pulling on the flats. A few more weeks of this and I'll be ready to contribute a bit more. I couldn't help but think... hey, I'm riding with 3 guys, it's like an AR. Maybe I could turn these guys into my local AR team.... it would be a tough sell, but we'll see. We talked about getting Nusil jerseys after the ride.

Hiked the Chumash trail with Kelly. It was definitely intense for about the first mile up to the flag. After that, it was a nice easy hike. Afterward, I bought a NatGeo map of the Santa Monica mountains. Pretty nice. I think I'll try to start incorporating some of these trails into runs. Probably the first part will just need to be a hike because it's super steep, but once you're up there, the trails are nice and rolling to flat. Good for running.

Was super worried because my right shoulder was bothering me in the morning. This is the one that had the rotator cuff injury. How was I going to manage a 27-mile race next weekend if the shoulder was hurt. I was a bit careful on it, but in the end, it didn't end up hurting while I was paddling. In fact, by evening, it was actually feeling better. Weird stuff. I steered for my team for next weekend's Catalina Crossing. We all got along well and seemed to improve as time went on during the practice.

"recovery fair" according to my watch today. No surprise. You're supposed to take the day off after a TE5, but I had practice.... so, tomorrow, I guess. We did some intervals. It was good.
