Took the Ojai Valley Trail from Ventura to the end in Ojai. It was a gentle climb for much of the way out, so the return was easier/faster. I think I could ride my road bike on it, but there are a few bumpy/rough sections. It was a cloudy day, so I missed a lot of the views, but it was still pretty once I got out of the industrial area. It rained for about 45 minutes on the way back, but it was light enough that I was only wet on the front side. I even passed 10 people and got passed by zero. Butt needs to get reacclimatized to the saddle. One more week to DST and more time to ride after work.

Note

Intended to go for a run, but having only slept 4 hours Thursday night, I had no energy. It's a long day leaving Long Beach at 5 am in order to miss the traffic on the 405 to make it back to Ventura at 6:30 to get ready for work. I was so tired I went to bed at 8 pm and slept 11 hours. Seriously wondering how parents manage the sleep deprivation. I'm such a baby I felt like I was suffering all day at work Friday.

Left a bit late for my run, but was able to run through a neighborhood and then through Downtown Ventura. It was a nice evening, but I will admit I wore a long sleeve for half of the run. Ha! Ran uphill a bit and took two 1-minute walk breaks during the long uphill section, though looking at the total vertical, it seems wimpy. Anyway, I'm getting pretty close to continuous running again! Though, i'm sure I'll walk some for a while when I'm doing the botanic garden climb.

Ocean Paddle with the California Kayak Friends group. They are mostly older people who just paddle out to enjoy the water - not really going for any hard training. It was the perfect group for me to paddle with for my first time on the ocean. I did a practice remount at the Kiddie Beach, and it didn't go quite as I'd hoped. I did get an assist with someone bracing my boat. We went out past the breakers and into the swells. I'm not sure how high they were, but you couldn't see shore when you were in a trough. It was both exciting and a bit scary. I took a hit from the side that sent me in, but I made an easy remount with a brace help. I wore a farmer john wetsuit with long sleeves and was totally comfortable after my two dips in the water. An hour was enough for me today. While I did really well overall, it was mentally exhausting just getting accustomed to being in the swells. Looking forward to slowly building this up. The nice thing is that there's always the harbor channels for paddling if the waves are too big or if I want to paddle alone. Apparently, there's a 5-mile loop in the harbor.

Note: HR was not related to effort - it was elevated due to the thrill/discomfort of being in the open ocean.
