Orienteering race (rogaining) 9:52:00 [4] 46.0 km (12:52 / km)

Python 10-hr rogaining, organized by NEOOC (Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club), in CVNP (Cuyahoga Valley National Park).

FLASH NEWS Tue Oct 4: the Moscompass Model 6 that was lost at the end of the race, has been found!!

Went on a counter-clockwise route, picked mostly high-valued checkpoints. Could not find 55, even after doing two passes. Maybe my eyes just didn't see the colors of the flag, I don't know. Kevin Fischer believes the flag was placed in a small reentrant to the east of where center of circle was printed on the map. Got confused on my approach to 38. Small mistake on my approach to 68. Costly mistake after 56. Route choice near 76. Intentionally ignored 32. Some underbrush detoured me when going from 44 to 73. Some dilemma and route choices in the Oak Hill area. Some final thoughts on routing in Oak Hill area.

Collected 47 controls, 2480 points.

Got to the corn make at 6:10 PM and realized I never picked up a map of the corn maze. Used my smartphone to send a text to the wife, and she went to event HQ, inquired about the map, and participant CJ, who finished early, showed her the map, which she photographed and sent the image to me in a text. So I did the corn maze holding a smartphone and looking at an electronic display. What a hack. Btw, GPS says it was a 10-minute penalty for forgetting to pick up that paper map.

Lost my Moscow compass after the last checkpoint. Went back the next day to look for it, and did a grid search on the grassy mowed grass slope, but did not find it (hey Mark Lattanzi, you got any left in your store stock?)

For shoes, used a pair that I found at a Goodwill thrift store for $5 and haven't tried them yet before this event. I guess they are all-right.

Kudos to all the NEOOC volunteers that made this event happen. And glad that it got all the participants and attendance, some coming from far away.
