Orienteering 31:11 [1] ** 1.42 km (21:58 / km) +30m 19:52 / km

Sprint model at the Team Trials. I arrived very early due to my red eye flight, so I had plenty of time to wander the model map. I walked pretty much the whole thing taking detours as necessary to check out all of the mapping details. A few short jogs to check my pace count at the 1:4000 scale.

Orienteering race (sprint) 32:15 [4] *** 3.13 km (10:18 / km) +58m 9:26 / km

Sprint race, Lehigh University at the Team Trials. I had an early start which was nice. Since I was the slowest woman in the team trials, starting early meant everyone else was catching up and passing me, so I got to really enjoy the feeling of racing and seeing others. A really nice, complex course. I didn't make any really huge mistakes. Overshot number 4 (hiding behind the dumpster) and had to come back. Also a few spots where I wished I had run across the grass instead of down the stairs.

Orienteering race 1:50:00 [3] ***

Half the Red course at Firestone Scout Ranch. 100 degree temperatures and spring high grass conspired to make this the least fun I've had orienteering in a long time. We usually use this venue in November and it's considered our best non-A level site. At this time of year, however, the vegetation was ruthless. I ended up bailing out to the road and picking up a safety shuttle after losing my map. That was after fighting my way up a steep hill through 8 foot high grass after NOT finding #5 (I'm now convinced I was in the proper reentrant and the control was placed lower than mapped. I don't think I went low enough). My time includes time spent socializing at the water stop, stopping to pick grass seeds out of my shoes, and riding back to the finish in the shuttle.
