orienteering race 1:18:52 [3] 7.69 km (10:15 / km)
ahr:146 21c

Walked the course. Felt so-so.

Yesterday I felt terrible. Instead of making dinner, mowing the lawn, and packing. I went to sleep at 7:45 and slept for the next 11 hours. I was still feeling off, so I decided to walk the course with the idea that I would stop if I felt bad.

I felt so-so. I walked hard/fast and that actually felt like a lot of work. But, night orienteering is so fun and the terrain was unusual enough to be especially interesting - and I didn't stop.

Despite walking, I had a few booms. Leaving 7 I didn't get my direction right and headed S when I should have headed SE. At 13 I was headed for the control when I saw Glen T and a few other runners at a control. I knew Glen was on my course, so I went over to the marker, feeling like it wasn't in the right spot...and it wasn't my marker. Recovery was easy, but it was a bad mistake because it was so dumb to pay attention to others instead of the map.

9 looks like a boom, but it was really just avoiding some crappy forest.

Note

Still working on resting and sleeping - moving in the right direction.

I should be hearing from the Cristina-bot soon.

Note

Still moving in the right direction. But, also still not yet healthy.

Also, feeling sad about Steve Tilford. I didn't know him well - met him twice - but was a fan and a frequent blog reader. The first time I met him was orienteering on West Campus. That was a long time ago.

Note

What I'd thought (hoped?) were just some allergies turns out to have been the start of a cold. I first noticed it last Thursday. So, a few days of plenty of rest and sleep.

Ft Lev Adventure orienteering. Score with some random elements thrown in (you got a bingo card and had to get the controls that were listed on your card, but the cards weren't all the same). The map is not a real orienteering map, but is also a good bit better than a normal adventure race map.

I had low expectations. I did not sleep well last night. For some reason, my left hip was aching (it seemed to start when I was watching the basketball game). The discomfort was enough that I tossed and turned a lot. I finally took some ibuprofen around 3:30 and got some sleep. I still felt sleepy when Sandy picked us up in the morning. With that background, I decided to jog around the course at something above an easy jog, but below a race effort.

I also had some very weird stuff with my right foot. There were two times when I was running along, feeling fine, and then the top of my right foot started hurting. It went away after a few minutes. Very strange.

Ft Lev Adventures does a good job as always (even if an ice cream at the finish wasn't needed in the chilly 48F temps). I had two favorite control locations:

1. The guard tower inside the walls of the old prison. It is always fun to run in through those big heavy prison walls.

2. The Berlin Wall - Ft Lev had a chunk of the wall imported from Germany.

Fort Leaveworth would be a great location for some sort of urban sprint map and a national event of some kind. I think permission would be a chore and getting people on the post is a pain, but the area is interesting.
