full body weights - felt pretty good considering the race yesterday - considering doing Hellgate with Denise and Audrey Dec 13th 100 km in Virginia - waiting to get go ahead from Jamie and orgainzers...think I am getting hooked on this ultra stuff!

Raid the Hammer - great to see alot of familiar faces out doing the race - felt like an AR reuinion!
We had a great start to race - felt like the good old days - moved well - Jamie's leg seemed to hold up well, etc. When we lost our si card it was tough to keep mentally in the race but we pushed on hoping that we could still be ranked if we manually punched in but soon found out this was not an option. We finished the course off, wished the outcome had been different but were happy to just see everyone!

Death race story:

Late but better than never!

I would rate the Cdn Death race as one of my top 3 races ever done.
Wonderful people, beautiful area. Thanks Kelly and Bob for helping me out there!

Race started 8 a.m. in Grande Cache and police escorted us out of town for the first 5 km staright in to the trails - my kevlar race snapped at the 5 km mark and sent me in to a frenzy - luckily had a spare from my mom's keds in my bag - went out fairly quick in first leg (had been warned by Denise Rispole to pace and not go out to fast). Felt great after first leg which was about 19 km and headed out quickly in to leg two heading up
to the first big mountain range Flood and Grande Mountain "slug fest" 27 km. I was pretty excited about this leg as Denise had told me it would remind me the most of an ar race. The views were spectacular and the terrain was so much fun!
The third leg was 19 km and very flat and fast. I found my mind playing tricks on me in this section as I started feeling very alone. I thought I heard something in the woods beside me many times, stopping when I stopped, etc, etc. I was very happy to come to the end of this leg and get ready for Hamel which was supposed to be the "killer" leg of the race 38 km - most elevation).
I met up with another solo male (Kyle) and we started chatting and turned sharply right and started climbing switchbacks....he started to not feel well and told me to go on as he was sure we would cross paths again at some point in the race. I climbed and climbed the switch backs and then a wave of fear came over me when I remember Denise telling me that I would not see switch backs until the top of Hamel - I also remember what Jamie had said if I ever thought I was lost - look down and look for foot prints...if there are none then you are probably lost as you are not in first.... I tricked myself in to believing that the "ratty" orange flagging tape I saw was part of the course....I ran back down and found two other relayers who let me know that we were all of course and would have to re trace our steps back down to the VERY obviously marked correct small trail out to the Trans Canada Highway which would take us to Hamel.

Back on track - probably lost just over an hour and met up with kyle again who had a better sense of humour than me at this point.

We pushed hard together up Hamel and felt like we were back in the game.
The top of Hamel was spectacular - it really felt for me like I as on top of the world. I was full of emotion as I looked at all the "prayer flags "that were blowing in the wind (we worte a personal message on a flag that was to be put on the top of Hamel). I wish I could have just stayed up there forever and take in the view just a little longer but it was quickly getting cold and I wanted to get down to leg 5 as quick as possible. Leg 5 was the final leg consisting of a few small climbs, a raft ride and run to the finish. I could hear the sound of the high powered motor boat in the dark for what seemed like an eternity...and this is the point of the race that I saw many people falling apart - my friend Kyle felt great and took off on me but some other soloists were laying around on the side of the trails either a sleep or puking. This made me push a little harder to finish this off. The push to the finish felt like one of those long AR races where you start dreaming about a big meal and warm bed! I crossed the finish line and saw Kyle who waited for me. I don't think I stopped smiling all the way back to my hotel. I had no idea how I had done in the race I was just very pleased to finish. I was happy to discover I placed 2nd in my age group and top 5 women soloists. I must say I could not walk for about two days properly but I will never forget the Canadian Death race!!!
