AR race 8:56:18 [3]

Wow is how I would describe LRS for me - went in with friend who had debated not doing it right up to the last minute with some IT issues that she was afraid would haunt her in final run and her profession being a nurse and yoga instructor did not allow alot of time off for injury. Little did we know that her injury would just be one of our concerns for that day! At the last minute we switched our rental boat before the start and decided to go with a lighter canoe. As we were waiting to start I noticed there was no keel and VERY tippy - off we went spinning in circles, my partner having a very difficult time steering and controlling boat - I had agreed to enter this race for "fun" with her and turn off my competitive nature but WOW this was testing my patience as I looked behind us to see two canoes only that were gaining on us. We got in to a rhythm at a few points during the paddle but it was very slow. Just when we thought it was almost over and we just had over 2 km to go I heard "Ladies please pull your boat over.....WHAT????" We need your boat.....apparently our last minute switch was someone's personal craft for the Pinecrest course! The very apologetic volunteers quickly made the switch with us on some gentlemans dock who was trying to enjoy a morning coffee with his wife watching the choas transform in front of him. I don't ever remember laughing so hard with my friend - it was hard to concentrate but wow did this new boat ever move and we finally could move quickly!! Finished paddle on to bike - good technical riding but should have brought a tow for road as would have helped us. Past Pete Dobos on bike who looked like he had a mechanial was told by volunteer we had 8 km to hub so re set my odometer......15 km later,......still not at hub.....>?Get to hub and Pete is there chuckling as he did not pass us so not sure where I went but anyways ON TO RUN! We set off and my partners injury was starting to emerge so we settled in to a walk/shuffle and eventually she was able to push it to a slow jog but felt awful as did not want her to come out injured.......then was concerned after bushwhack that we were seeing people coming back in opposite direction? I know we had to loop back but something did not feel right. I was then told we were doing the loop backwards ...ok....what is the worst that can happen - just keep going to half way mark and we can get this done just in reverse! Then I become increasingly concerned when I look at my watch - over two hours and we are still not at half way point. I know we are moving slowly with partners injury but no way that slow....then we are on to road run section which clearly is not part of race so ran back and forth frantically on road trying to find parking lot leading to CP. Found Angus in his car giving me a strange look as I came in from the road and then a good chuckle between us all as he said there seemed to be some confusion which at this point made me feel a little bit better after realizing that we had somehow gone off track and ran part of the bike course. Off we went back to home base keeping very close eye on ribbons and Champ Run course signs - soooo nervous we were going to do another entire section of race instead of returning to home base. Was very pleased to finish race and proud of my partner for sticking it out with her injury! What an adventure - did not expect to spend that long out there but with AR you just never know what can happen!!!
