Trail Running race 26:26:00 [4]

Barb had told us a year ago this looked like an amazing beautiful race in Italy so we jumped on registration as I knew Barb would have researched it perfectly and we're excited to be accepted (sad Audrey's final payment was messed up so she did not have entry by the end) but was an amazing support for Dee and I.
Mass Race start at 11 pm out of Cortina. We were trying to find Barb and Tim but too many racers in the dark! No waves which caused us to back log right away on first climb and decent. I have never been in a trail race where we actually came to full stand still on the mountain.
Maybe waves will be introduced in future for this race?
I was looking forward to doing this race with Dee and we had committed to stay together throughout race
It was not very long in to race when I realized my body was definitely off...
I was pleased my knee seemed fine but I knew it was going to be a tough mental battle the way my stomach and legs were feeling very early.
When sun came up the views were spectacular at the top of one of our climbs, we were surrounded by the gorgeous Dolomites!
We were surprised at our first aid station how tough it was to get food and water with the line ups something I had not experienced at other ultras
I had not packed as much back up food as I should have as was hoping to rely on the aid station food I remembered being so plentiful at CCC
We continued on through open fields up to beautiful technical climbs and long descents and the heat started coming on so we would stop frequently and dunk our heads to keep cool
I started having more frequent stomach issues which had me tucking into bushes over and over again slowing down our day ...
It was great seeing Audrey at Aid stations and she new exactly how to keep us moving and motivated.
Dee felt very strong and I at one point told her she should go run her own race as this was obviously going to be a longer day for me which I was fine with but we stuck together and she was very patient !
The weather turned wet windy and thunderstorms near the back half of the course which proved to be the most challenging. Dee got struck by some vertigo and nausia but handled it like a champ.
It was comical coming down final never ending descent at end which had turned into a mudslide
Dee and I took turns wiping out and having some good laughs!
It was great to see Audrey to run us into the finish and so great to cross the finish and see Sean waiting for us with a nice cold beverage!

I am pleased to have finished what felt like a VERY long 26 hours the way I was feeling on a tough but beautiful course!

I was happy I got to experience it with a good friend

It was great that Tim and Barb also had great races on the long course and Sean Heather and Ricardo on the 50 km and Kristen on the 25 km success for everyone and some great meals and outings with a great group of friends!!
Thanks for coming up with idea Barb!
