Adventure Race race 16:00:00 [3]

Wilderness Traverse - 24 hour race

First off, the following must be said (and probably more than once for good measure!) - Bob and Barb did an amazing job with this race! The course was great - lots of route choice, excellently organized and executed. The volunteers on the course and at HQ (thanks Dee!) made it an all-around positive experience and kept us motivated through the TAs and CPs. Thanks to everyone who helped pull off this event - amazing. :)

Long first trek. Teammate had some foot issues pretty soon after the trek started, and they got worse as we went. Lots of time spent trying to fix the feet, but in the end we were moving really slowly through the trek. Our nav was pretty good through this section - a few glitches, but all in all pretty on.

End of Trek #1 (CP4 / TA1) and Blob and Panda were done their race. Wasn't sure if the remaining two of us would be allowed to carry on, we had the TA staff check in with HQ. I was going to nav, and were given the green light to move on with only two of us on a modified bike section (Thanks Bob and Barb!!!).

Started the bike with a 'lovely' 4 km hike-a-bike. Mac16666 wasn't feeling too stellar (I *might* have goaded him a little into getting on his bike in the first place...) but we just kept steadily moving forward at a slow pace towards the next CP. Mac16666 ate a little and had some fluids and by the time we hit the gravel road was feeling much better so we picked up the pace and had a great ride up to CP5.

From CP 5, we headed east instead of west on our 'short course' to head straight to CP8 / TA2. Saw another team at the highway who was headed back to the Finish on bike, and they shared some smartfood popcorn with us (YUM!), and after a quick visit we headed on up to the Paddle section.

Paddle started with a gorgeous clear night but slowly became quite foggy. Had a little trouble with one portage (oops), but otherwise the paddle went quite well. Feeling a little sleepy, but otherwise good. :) We did the short-course paddle, skipping CP10.

CP11/TA3 we managed a pretty good transition to the last trekking section which was a trail run. We managed a solid shuffle-run for this section which really felt good - finishing with smiles.

Thanks Mac16666 for keeping going, and Panda for meeting us at the finish line - it was good to see you there! :)

As a first timer at the 24 hour AR, I really enjoyed the format. I have learned a lot about myself, particularly my unwillingness to quit. :) I had a good time and really enjoyed seeing others on the course - lots of friendly faces and quick laughs to be had with other teams.
