Note

Recumbent Bike geek alert- at the Sebrig 12 and 24hr road races 'bents are legal, and they dominated. Most of these do not have fairings, just aero positions and good engines.

"Probably the most impressive performance was from Bacchetta’s Jacquie Hafner who completed 254.7 miles in the 12 Hour category. She was followed very closely by Maria Parker of Cruzbike with 246.9 miles. Both ladies were well over the previous Sebring record for that class. Sandy Earl also powered her Carbent to a very impressive 442.6 miles in the 24 Hour category. This also completely obliterated her own previous women’s 24 hour record.

On the men’s side John Schlitter of Bacchetta set a personal best with 492.2 miles to take the overall mileage crown for this year’s event. Kent Polk and Troy Timmons (also on Bacchettas) followed up with 484.7 and 469.2 miles respectively. Doyce Johnson led the 12 Hour race with 258.1 miles on a socked Easy Racers Ti-Rush. " (This one has a front fairing and a fabric body.)

XC Skiing 35:00 [2]

Slow and sticky but scenic ski with Bulletdog around Palgrave West. Forecast stinks for the next while so I thought I'd get some skiing in while I can.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Easy workout 2 and knee/foothab.

XC Skiing 1:25:00 [4]

Classic with Goose at Highlands. Classic XC is one of my favourite sports, but the Goose is King.

I felt good up the big S-hill, but think I pushed it too hard there, and the rest was a bit of a grunt.
We did 1 big and 1 small lap before lunch, and then a second after lunch at a somewhat easier pace for the first half.
Saw tons of folks we know.
12 PM

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:01:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (31:00 @4) 12.28 km (12.1 kph) +204m

(Garmin only partially logged correctly)

Second lap with Goose. Coach LD came along but turned back part way, so we continued with Silken Laumann's coach Fred on his skate skis.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

Easy warmup then a few ints. Bored already.

Strength (Home gym) 45:00 [3]

Workout 1 + pushups and pulldowns and knee/foothab. A little short on time.

XC Skiing (Commute) 30:00 [2]

It was snowing a bit in the AM so I optimistically skied to work.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Luckily I'd brought my icebugs, and left the skis at work.
I thought I saw Bender prance over a chest-high fence, but it was a buck deer.

Cycling (Trainer) 20:00 [2]

Bit of a knee warmup on the trainer, plus some 1-leg drills. Had to dial back the gearing for the bad knee.

Strength 50:00 [3]

Good solid Link workout with extra pull-ups and push-ups on balance board.
Again, the knee felt it a bit.
11 AM

Running tempo 42:00 [4] 3.88 mi (10:50 / mi) +73m 10:14 / mi
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

To work via the long route through the hilly bits of Palgrave East. Since I can't go too far yet I thought I'd crank up the intensity.

Some bare ground, some solid trails, but a lot of uneven soft crust too. Not sure if skiing or running is better.
9 PM

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Easier run home in the dark.

XC Skiing (Commute) 1:00:00 [3]

A bit sketchy on the way to work, and worse on the way home- the open fields were almost bare, needing hike-a-ski. Still not bad deep in the bush, but it's pretty broken up.

Monday Feb 21, 2011 #

XC Skiing 1:50:00 [2]

Nice ski with Bash and Bulletdog. Conditions 5cm powder over icy crust so only fair, but the hound sure loved it.

Sunday Feb 20, 2011 #

Cycling (Trainer) 20:00 [1]

Easy spin-out for the legs.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Full workout 3 + knee and foothab (yawn).

Snowshoeing race 3:04:00 [4]

Snowshoe Raid with Goose.
I was quite nervous about my knee and fitness level before the race, but we were running with the front-runners for the first couple of hours.
At that point Goose had some bad cramp issues, we both got cold and I got the nav a bit muddled in the matrix, so we had to leave 120 points on the table and hoof it home best we could, losing another 40 in late penalties. Still good enough for 2nd masters.

Great fun running with one tough Goose, who sure left it all out there.
We got our butts handed to us by Bash and Dee and also Crash and Leanimal, but I was glad to be able to run that long without too much knee trouble. See how it is tomorrow.

Friday Feb 18, 2011 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 2 + the usual kneehab etc. and some sets of 12 pull-ups. Sheesh, 12 is hard now.

Also rebuilt the Omega bike with the new frame geometry. We'll see how she rides once it either firms up or dries up out there.

Wednesday Feb 16, 2011 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 plus kneehab. I suspect I'm gonna feel this one tomorrow.

Snowshoeing (Commute) 28:00 [3]

Time to start tapering for the Snowshoe Raid.
I took the easiest possible route, but the first km was still post-holing.
Palgrave East was runnable in shoes.

Snowshoeing (Commute) 30:00 [2]

Easy and knee-friendly commute home. Walked the post-hole sections of Palgrave West, which is now getting a decent trail.

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 #

Snowshoeing (Commute +) 1:25:00 intensity: (55:00 @3) + (30:00 @4)

Time to start training for the snowshoe raid.
Bulletdog and I were postholing through breakable crust, and we did some hill intervals. Breaking through the crust knee-deep I could barely get a fast walk up the steep hills, and Bulletdog actually fell behind, even in my tracks.
On the hard frozen trails the Pond hills were easy and fast.

Bulletdog was totally spent by the time we got home.

Running 55:00 [3]
shoes: NB MT 101

Up and over the "mountain" from Sumner to Lyttleton- view and back with Andrew. Howling headwind at first, but nice views made for a great run.

Thursday Feb 10, 2011 #

Note

Pre-race briefing- forecast is good, and regular course is on.

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: NB MT 101

Short run with Bash and then Chris in Greymouth. Main road's fairly busy at rush hour, but it sure is beautiful.

Monday Feb 7, 2011 #

Cycling 25:00 [2]

Met up with Symon, who owns the titanium 'bent but was riding his commuter 'bent, and we went for a coffee run in the pouring rain before returning the bikes back to him. Sniff- goodbye 10kg titanium bike.

Sunday Feb 6, 2011 #

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Morning scoot 'round the park. Got up some decent speed on a few empty straightaways, and of course some pull-ups.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Vibram FF Trek

FF Quest For Shade barefoot run through the park off the trails for once. Legs
felt light and fairly quick, and I think the cold's almost gone. 32c will do that.

Cycling 2:30:00 [2]

Tour of the bike paths of ChCh while Bash and Chris do the mountain run again.
I scored a great map, which showed me tons of paved bike paths all over town. I got out in the suburbs via a trail beside the railway, then out where I had a wide paved lane all to myself parallel to the highway, then followed the Avon river back into downtown, and through the park back home.

A rather bad start earlier- some 'bent buddies were passing by at 7AM, but I forgot that this princess 'bent doesn't go over curbs well, and got a flat. After fighting with the tightest tire bead ever, I used all 3 patches on the weird 20" front tube (of course I had a 700c spare rear tube but not the funny front one) then I found I had no less than 4 punctures. Walked the bike 200M back home, then rode a beater to the bike shop and bought the biggest puncture repair kit I could find.
The 4th patch was the charm!

Lunch was a bike-in affair at a nice cafe downtown, where they let me bring the 'bent into the patio while they gave me fast wifi and fed me calamari and soy lattes. Hope the mountain run is as much fun.

Running 30:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: NB MT 101

Assorted missions about town and the park. Found a fitness trail with some pull-up rings, and got some sets in too.

Hiking 2:00:00 [0]
(sick)

(2 hrs) Nice hike with Chris and Nell on the gorgeous Bank peninsula.
Wineries, artisan cheese shops, spectacular volcanic Middle-earth scenery, beaches and great French food!
The harbour is a massive extinct volcano crater, and the entire insides of the volcano are a different ecosystem- lush and green, with crazy slopes all around. One of the most amazing I've seen.

Thursday Feb 3, 2011 #

Cycling 2:25:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (1:40:00 @3)
(sick)

Riding the borrowed 'bent- A couple of early laps around the park trails,'then a faster training ride with Bash as she tested Princess on part of the C2C course.
I had an easier time than Bash in the headwind with my more aero bike, offset by my nasty cold.

Wednesday Feb 2, 2011 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Spin around North and South Park on a beater MTB.
Knee was sore at first but loosened up.
Also getting sick- some sort of cold.

Tuesday Feb 1, 2011 #

Hiking 8:00:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail GTX

Hike/ jogged the c2c mountain run- See Bash's log for details.
Quite a few thigh-deep crossings with lots of current, and serious scrambling on large and small rocks- the most technical run we've seen. A brief stop at the hut at the pass, than a aomewhat easier descent. My knee didn't like the steep descents one bit. Bash had lots of oomph and Jackalope was prancing from rock to rock effortlessly on this scouting "hike".
