XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

-18 in the morning, -1 on the return trip.

Sunday Feb 27, 2022 #

Note

Kolapore ski tour- the movie. Best in full screen. Watch for the out-take at the end.

Snowshoeing 15:00 [2]

Stomp with Bash and the hounds. The big guy got on some fresh coyote tracks, but did reluctanty come back to us rather than bolting off.
11 AM

XC Skiing 1:26:21 intensity: (8:44 @0) + (1:12:38 @1) + (2:34 @2) + (2:25 @3) 9.89 km (6.9 kph) +199m
ahr:111 max:143

Loop with Bash. Chose the skin skis as I didn’t want to fuss with low grip. They certainly had grip, but are a bit laggy on the glilde.
Pushed a bit from Kolapore Church access to the Red Death turnoff. Decent time but I could do better with faster-gliding skis.

Snowshoeing race 2:06:56 intensity: (39 @0) + (8:28 @1) + (57:00 @2) + (38:59 @3) + (21:44 @4) + (6 @5) 13.78 km (9:13 / km) +252m 8:26 / km
ahr:148 max:181

Includes warmup and cooldown- actual race time 1:58.
Not the Snowshoe Raid with Timato. They had to make it virtual on short notice. Good job, all things considered.

Tim was in fine form, accurate and strong, and we did a fair bit of trail breaking (well, mostly Tim).
Felt OK, but maybe still a bit of the CSM in my legs.
Met Bash and Dee looking strong, right before going through the ice up past my knee. Luckily I had waterproof shoes and sealskinz socks.

Other teams who do it later will have good broken trail now.

Snowshoeing 46:35 intensity: (18:02 @0) + (26:23 @1) + (2:10 @3) 2.7 km (17:16 / km) +39m 16:06 / km
ahr:102 max:120

Out trail breaking with the hounds. Fluffy powder over breakable crust.
We found T&L’s trail to make a south loop.

Running 59:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Boilerplate ice then breakable crust. Still beats driving.

Wednesday Feb 23, 2022 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Out with the boys then off to work later.
Icy lumpy crust and boilerplate.

The big guy is now running with me completely off leash. Sadly by the time we're half way through he's too slow to escape even if he wanted to. Part of me misses the crazy Bazingadog, but he's a gentleman dog now.
10 AM

Strength 30:00 [3]

Some lumberjack, some rehab and part of workout 1.
7 PM

Running 27:26 intensity: (57 @0) + (5:15 @1) + (7:31 @2) + (9:38 @3) + (3:56 @4) + (9 @5) 3.53 km (7:47 / km) +51m 7:15 / km
ahr:143 max:180

Night ice run home.

Tuesday Feb 22, 2022 #

Running 1:02:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Mix of post-holing, lumpy crust, hardpack and then mush and slush on the return in the rain.

Sunday Feb 20, 2022 #

Strength 20:00 [2]

Shoveling. Howling winds out so snow will drift up again.

Saturday Feb 19, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 20:00 [2]

Breaking trail in knee-deep snow yet again! Dogs were up to their necks.
4 PM

XC Skiing 53:41 intensity: (32:39 @0) + (16:39 @1) + (4:23 @3) 5.21 km (5.8 kph) +106m
ahr:98 max:113

Very blustery bitter wind so we only did a short ski in the shelter of the cliffs. My CSM frostbite on my face hurt in the wind, so we went back to snowshoe with the dogs.

Friday Feb 18, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 50:00 [1]

Out with the neighbours and dogs.

Strength 15:00 [1]

Shovelled out my neighbour’s upper driveway when the massive tractor snowblower couldn’t make it up the hill.
9 AM

XC Skiing 1:50:34 intensity: (1:16:38 @1) + (28:00 @2) + (5:56 @3) 9.62 km (5.2 kph) +182m
ahr:102 max:120

Winter wonderland ski with Bash and CoachLD, breaking trail in deep fluffy powder on a perfect day.

Thursday Feb 17, 2022 #

Note

No Starlink for us- once the Hitler memes show up, I’m out. Sorry Not Sorry, Elon.

Snowshoeing 50:00 [2]

Snowshoe with the dogs. Any time they stepped off the frozen old track the poor boys postholed deep in the wet snow, but had a good hike where it was solid.

Wednesday Feb 16, 2022 #

Note
(rest day)

Dumping rain and howling winds- so glad I moved the CSM up from the original date - tomorrow.

XC Skiing 10:08:10 [3] 60.34 km (6.0 kph) +948m

CSM day 2 -
We were pretty sluggish in the morning. We had to break trail in the new snow that had fallen, but at least it wasn't like yesterday's gritty ice.

We went up Mt Dhaulagiri to the lookout of course. You can see yesterday's distance and frostbite on my face.

We did all the Marc's Folly hills and I took my only fall of the CSM, being a smartass and trying to carve a telemark turn. I had to re-do the run to improve my score.
Hit the aid station at 25km and 45km this time. We were pretty tired but still gobsmacked at the scenery. So amazing to have nearly 20 hours of continuously spectacular skiing, and only a handful of people, half of whom are friends we know.

We bushwhacked the new Wild Mouse bypass, which Bash had kindly broken in for us, so we did all the existing trails and 2 future ones!

We met Chad and the Spence clan in the last 5 km.

Made it in before dark, despite the slow conditions and sluggish bodies.

Last time I did Gold was 15 years ago. This one seemed harder, but also more spectacular and adventurous, and fun to ski with Stephen. He's rock solid, knows how to set the perfect CSM pace, and will probably do 10 more of these.
Big thanks to Bash for the support and tracking, and the Good Samaritans who left us cookies in our food bin.

XC Skiing 9:47:49 [3] 60.61 km (6.2 kph) +1089m

Canadian Ski Marathon Coureur des Bois Gold virtual edition. Day 1

The CSM Gold is usually 160km over 2 days, where you carry all your gear and meals and sleep out overnight. They fully machine-groom the trail and have aid stations every 20km with hot soup, drinks, food and warming tents. At Gold camp they have fires already going, provide hot water and a hay bale as a seat and sleeping pad. The virtual edition is 120km due to lack of support.

This year Stephen Couchman was going for his 9th gold and I joined him for my second. We did it the hard way, 60km each day on the backcountry ungroomed Kolapore Wilderness Trails. We also had a secondary goal to ski every inch of the 50+km network, including the experts-only hills we usually only tackle with backcountry gear in ideal conditions, not on racing skis with a full pack on crusty snow.

We started day one in the dark under an extreme cold warning. Apparently it got down to -28 in the morning.

We had to break trail with a thin but grainy layer on top for the first few hours, very abrasive and slow.

I got a bit of frostbite on the long fast downhill into North West Passage, but sunrise was incredible.

Had to deploy hot packs for my hands, but we were enjoying the ski.
Barb met us at a road crossing as our GPS tracker had frozen.

Barb set up a box of soup, drinks and goodies at Bruce and Val's place at the far end of Kolapore, and we hit it at about 23km. We did a big loop in the opposite direction including Red Death and Paradise Hwy. We only saw 1 couple right near the parking lot all day.

The tracks finally got faster as we re-did the trails. Aid station 2 at the 44km mark, then back home via Wild Mouse and The Gulch.

Bash met us near the end.

Back home we set up Gold camp and toasted pizza from our packs over the fire for dinner.

Injured Ski Musketeer Kev W fatbiked over to join us for a slice of pizza at Gold Camp.

Phenomenal night under a brilliant full moon, then falling snow.

Sunday Feb 13, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 20:00 [2]

Jog/hike with the dogs. Cram taper day- we had to move the CSM to tomorrow as weather looks dicey Wednesday.

Saturday Feb 12, 2022 #

8 AM

Snowshoeing 20:00 [2]

Trot with the dogs.
11 AM

XC Skiing 3:20:38 [3] 21.38 km (6.4 kph) +425m

Kolapore main loop with Bash. Skied with my heavy touring gear and full CSM Gold camp pack. Broke lots of trail in the first third, but surprisingly good conditions for the most part, considering the recent rain. New Chute was quick!

Friday Feb 11, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 1:20:00 [2]

Out with the boys to mark and clear the new trail, then a loop to the Bruce. Hard work for the dogs, even in our tracks.
Drizzly at times and warm.

XC Skiing 15:00 [3]

Scoot in the dark and light snow over to the neighbours to pick up a fresh baked Challah.
Broke trail the whole way.

Thursday Feb 10, 2022 #

XC Skiing 38:00 [3]

Fast and slick to work, very icy night ski home with some tracks that melted and refroze narrower than my skis and would randomly grab. Tricky and slow with a full CSM camping load.
7 AM

XC Skiing 33:00 [3] 4.14 km (7.5 kph) +62m

Wednesday Feb 9, 2022 #

XC Skiing 20:00 [2]

Short Skijor fail with the big guy.
He was Bazingadog for the first 2 minutes, but after a bit I had to unclip him so he wouldn't trip me up as he trotted slowly in my tracks. He was in no mood to break trail, but was excellent if slower company off leash.

Strength 20:00 [2]

A bit of lumberjack.
11 AM

XC Skiing 30:00 [3]

Commute
7 PM

XC Skiing 53:34 [3] 6.15 km (6.9 kph) +115m

Ski home plus extra, in a mix of slushy and icy conditions. Crown skis +full CSM Gold camping pack and gear.

Tuesday Feb 8, 2022 #

XC Skiing 1:02:00 [3]

Commute with my full CSM Gold pack. Used the pig skis for more training.

My tracks from yesterday are good! About 1/3 good tracks, 1/3 moderate trail and 1/3 dirty hardpack.

Monday Feb 7, 2022 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Used the old Crown pigs. Bit of a slog breaking trail for half, heavily used rough trail for the rest. Pretty decent on the return.

Sunday Feb 6, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 20:00 [3]

Another run chasing the dogs.

XC Skiing 2:00:00 [1]

Easy ski with Timato, MsTiny and not-so-Teeny.
The latter did great on Southern Crossing, Quiet Pastures and Jackrabbit!
She’s solid on the downhills too.
Later, fireside beer and pizza (from Later Pizza) and tobogganing. First mild day in weeks.

Dogs joined us by the bonfire. So nice to have the big guy roaming free with us. He wasn’t leaving pizza to run off through neck-deep snow.

Saturday Feb 5, 2022 #

Snowshoeing 20:00 [3]

Chasing the dogs on the packed trail. Hard run to start, hike by the end.
8 AM

XC Skiing 5:12:22 [3] 32.65 km (6.3 kph) +661m

CSM Gold training with the Ski Musketeers.

Full Kolapore loop plus Mt D
Just over 1/4 the CSM distance with Kev and Stephen.
Phenomenal bluebird day and winter wonderland condtions.

Friday Feb 4, 2022 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Shovel and Lumberjack.

Had to dig out Gold Camp around the fire pit under half a meter of snow and ice. Also dug out the wood pile and split and hauled a couple of loads to the garage to dry, and hand-sawed some hardwood logs.
12 PM

XC Skiing 1:52:35 [3] 9.72 km (5.2 kph) +202m

Kolapore - Paradise loop with Bash, Dee and Jaime. Winter wonderland!

Snowshoeing 26:57 [2] 1.55 km (17:21 / km) +23m 16:11 / km

Did the new trail with the fam. Big guy off leash all the time up here now! Near the end I wanted to bushwhack the Wolf Tree trail but he was having none of that, and marched home on the packed trail carrying his stick.

Thursday Feb 3, 2022 #

4 PM

Snowshoeing 42:00 [3] 1.7 km (24:42 / km) +13m 23:49 / km

Breaking a trail for the dogs, and hopefully to keep our ski tracks clear.
Lots of snow!

Wednesday Feb 2, 2022 #

Run in the rain to work, and night slog home in heavy wet snow.
