Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Kneehab, foothab, workout 1 + 100 push-ups + 3X8 pull-ups +KB.

Was hoping to ski to work, but rain is forecast, so I *drove*. Yeah, I know.

My van seemed to expire on repeated start tries so I had to rush out and clean up the Bashmobile. Should have snowshoed in Goretex- the enviro-gods are trying to tell me something.

Snowshoeing (Commute) 30:00 [3]

Home in the dark drizzle with Bulletdog.

Running 25:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Legs felt much better today and I was able to do the longer route to work with Bulletdog at a solid tempo pace. Should have worn icebugs though.

Running (Commute +) 35:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Good solid run home, with extra Pond Hill thrown in.

Monday Feb 27, 2012 #

Running (Commute) 55:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Back to running in snow to work and slush on the way back.
Not a lot of oomph today on the way there, but I was able to push a little on the way home. BZdog can still haul. Nice to have daylight both ways now.

XC Skiing race 3:09:23 intensity: (14 @2) + (9:00 @3) + (2:47:58 @4) + (12:11 @5) 40.82 km (12.9 kph) +601m

Cookie Race Ski Marathon. GPS to follow when I get home.
First *real* ski race. I didn't know what to expect, with the slow steep climbs, so I lined up at the 3:30 mark at the start.

Started off OK but got a stitch in my side that lasted on-and-off for the first half. It went away around Elk Pass.

As I'd planned, my skis didn't glide as well as most of the others, but I could run up hills past those walking herringbone on the Whiskeyjack climbs. I made up about 7 places here.
I was running low on gas at the high point at Elk Pass, but a cookie and a slug of Gatorade followed by a lo-o-ong gradual descent was great. Probably 8 km of double- poling!
The climb up Packers let me pass another 6 skiers. I had a hard job catching the last of the 3 ahead of me on the long final descent, and poled myself silly trying to reel in the other 2 with their better glide, but came up just short on the line.

I ended up at 3:09, 10 th of 35 in my group and 50' behind the overall winner. Bash surprised us by coming in 45 min ahead of her estimate, for a podium finish!
Carbon and Carbon's Offset rocked the 24k on their first week of skinny skiing.

I was happy with my time, and my knee was not too bad. Good times!

XC Skiing 1:09:00 intensity: (45:00 @1) + (24:00 @3) 4.89 km (4.3 kph) +87m

(90min) VO2Max gave us a Classic ski lesson, including slow-mo video critique.
Not only is he a great skier, but also gave us some great tips.

Bash and I did another loop to try out the stuff we learned. Bash is a quick learner! I need some work on the Beaverslap, and I am standing too tall at the end of the stride.

XC Skiing 1:18:00 [3] 15.87 km (12.2 kph)

Canmore Nordic with Bash. An easy-ish taper ski, but conditions were quick near 0C. Fantastic trail system!

XC Skiing 1:38:57 [2] 12.94 km (7.8 kph) +326m

Ski out from Skoki.
Windy snowy morning cleared up into a breezy but spectacular day. Tons of stops for photos. Some dense powder made for meniscus- unfriendly telemarking down the steep side of Deception Pass, and some tough trail breaking across Ptarmigan lake, but so spectacular that who cares? Great to have some real winter . Boulder pass was howling with headwinds, but after that it was one long gorgeous ski down to the car through snow- laden trees.
A really great little trip!

XC Skiing 4:00:00 [2]

Windy and snowy today at Skoki. Bash and I headed out for a tour around Mt Skokie and a side trip to Natural Bridge. Some great tree skiing with a few steep climbs, and another face plant on Gopro. We caught up to a family with their amazing 10 year old twin girls who had skied in the day before!
Hard to find tracks on our side loop, and the ones we saw were suspect so we never found Natural Bridge, but had a great ski anyway. Our tracks were already gone and it was snowing horizontally on the last part of the loop.
When we got back the girls had saved us a slice of chocolate cake!

XC Skiing 4:15:00 [3]

Skoki with Vj and Mike.
Snowy, scary drive without snow tires turned into a bluebird day. VJ had a bit of a tough time without skins on the first section going up the ski- out, but once we got up high wax was fine. Gorgeous views and great skiing.
We switchbacked up Deception Pass, and Mike and I got some good tele turns on skinny skis. Caught a great yard-sale crash on the Go-Pro too. At the lodge we all had some great soup then VJ and Mike headed back. It was great skiing with them.
Bash and I got another shorter ski after lunch too, down to Merlin Meadows and around.

XC Skiing 2:45:00 [3]

Met up with Carbon and CB for a ski at Pocaterra. Great day, excellent ski conditions, and a few big hills. See Bash's log for Pics.

Saturday Feb 18, 2012 #

XC Skiing 2:30:00 [3]

Classic skiing with bash up at Mount shark. Good ski conditions! Definitely felt the altitude. See Bash's log for pics.

GPS to follow.

Yoga 45:00 [1]

90 min. Yin-iscus.

XC ski-Skate (Skate) 31:00 [3]

Evening ski with Bash and Walkman at Canmore Nordic. Fast conditions- gps to follow. Knee was OK for a short skate.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Too busy waxing skis and packing to get in a workout or long run today.
2-dog run to work, but Bash's planning to pick up BZdog.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Commute with a remarkably well behaved, slack-leash Bazingadog. Best he's ever been.

I guess he's giving me the message that he's a lion if left behind while his sister runs to work, but a lamb if he gets to come instead.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

BZ dog was a bit more of a handful on the way home. He'd found Bash's tracks.

Running (Commute) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Another icy one to work with Bulletdog- but traction's a touch better with a little more snow. Huge wrestling match with Bazingadog to try and shut him inside- he wasn't keen on being left behind. I basically had to hurl him down the hall and slam the door, after 4 near-escapes.

Phatty's seen this in action.

Running 25:00 [3]

Solid run on a longer route home.

Running 1:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (30:00 @4)
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Took both hounds out for a quick lap, (BZ dog was almost impossible at first) then a longer attempt at a fast-paced run. Well, as fast as the ice and BZdog would allow, once he settled in. We took singletrack hoping it would be less icy, but the snow's just enough to clog the shoes but not enough to grip the ice.

Can't wait until BZdog can run off leash, instead of dragging me here and there.

Strength 40:00 [1]

Easy kneehab and partial workout.

Running 3:16:41 [2] 27.87 km (7:03 / km) +350m 6:38 / km
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

LSD with Bash.
Trails are so lousy, but it was too snowy to drive to SMT when I checked in the early AM so I went with Bash on her long road run.
Very cold into the wind in spots (Forgot my windproof briefs and yes, I did have to stuff my spare toque down my pants) but very nice in the sheltered areas.
Roads were clear in the middle, but the shoulders were snow-covered lumpy frozen slush, so still not great footing.

Slower pace than I've been running, but also my longest run in quite a while.
Good company too.

Did the last half block at race pace.
Knee was complaining at the 1 hour mark, but seemed to settle in.

Caron's core class

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Caron's giving us less breaks here.

Cycling 15:00 [2]

Quickie warmup spin

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Kneehab, foothab, workout 3 + 100 pushups, 25 pull-ups and KBs.

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

First lap with 2 dogs, then to work via the hilly route on the Palgrave Glacier with BZ dog.
I got in a few speed and hill intervals, but was limited a lot by ice, sinuses that still hurt with every stride, and the dog. I had to haul the poor pooch up one steep ice hill.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]

Easy run home in the moonlight with Bulletdog off leash.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Another cautious run with BZdog. Yesterday evening's mud is today's ice.
The pooch met his friend Brock the black lab, but also got terrorized by a Shi-tzu.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Another icy one home.
BZ dog had a few slips, but almost took me luging when we saw 5 deer silhouetted against the sunset on a bare hilltop.

This part of the trail isn't the worst.

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Commute with BZdog. He was remarkably good, after wiping out on the glare ice twice. Longer route home to avoid the worst trails and enjoy actual daylight.

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:30:00 [3]

Woo-hoo, feeling well enough to ski up at Highlands. Demo day and hard/icy out, so I borrowed some fast Salomon waxless skis for the first lap, exchanged them for skate skis for a short couple of loops, then took my old waxless beaters out for a third long loop. Not ideal conditions, but a lot better than sniveling on the couch under the duvet drinking tea.

Several times I saw folks take off their skis and walk down the hills. Only one group decided to walk in the middle of the trail, but they heard my howling waxless skis in plenty of time. Really, it wasn't that bad.

Felt a little winded, but not too bad. Still able to pass the masses on the climbs.

XC ski-Skate (Skate) 15:00 [3]

Screamin' fast couple of laps of the lower trails with borrowed skate skis. Man, these things are fast on ice. Lots of folks out there looking pretty scared on the downhills.

Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Run with Phats & Bulletdog on the slighlty less icy Charlevoix trails. while Bash and Weanimal entertained BZdog. Still feeling sluggish- Phatty was holding back for me. We got home just before needing headlamps.

Phatty got to see the dog-wrestling that's involved in trying to leave BZdog behind.

I replaced 10 missing spikes with machine screws on my icebugs, and they were needed.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Finally able to do some strength. Not a ton of oomph, so I did some Home Gym and K/O's Link workout, which at least works up a good sweat.
Sinuses no longer feel like a dropped kettlebell.

Cycling 1:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (30:00 @2)
(sick)

Easy spin on the trainer.

Friday Feb 3, 2012 #

Note

Strength 20:00 [1]

Foothab, kneehab and some time on the wobble board and ball.

Note

Still too sick to do anything but maybe watch trailers for cycling movies:
