Misc (Firewood!) 1:00:00 [1]

Oh I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK...
We have a huge pile of firewood dumped in our driveway, and I've been running wagonloads to our shed in the back for some cross-training. Lots of heaving logs and some splitting too.

Hiking (Commute + Trail Maintenan) 45:00 [2]

Hiked to work, armed with my weed whacker and a manual chain saw to remove a huge tree on the trail. Hard work, but now I can get by with my bike again. Still resting the drumsticks after RTN. Basically in a rebuilding period now, so no heavy duty training.

Hiking warm up/down (Commute) 35:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

In recovery mode from RTN

Adventure Racing race 7:00:00 [3]

Last day- Biking, zipline, rafting and more biking. We ramped it up a notch as there was a team within a few minutes of us, but I think we held them off and ended up getting a medal for 5th place. The 6th place team Pure are a great bunch who may actually tie or pass us once the details are sorted out, but we're still thrilled to not just finish but do respectably, given Bash's knee, Hingo's back and achilles, and Gazelle's Tajikistan-belly.

Adventure Racing race 21:00:00 [2]

RTN Champs Day 3
Epic trek, which went well for us, then some biking and the zip-line. Wish it was light- looked nice in the pictures.
Also the thrills of lugging my 'bent bike up a 30M cliff on a narrow trail in the dark, as well as doing Bash's bike so she wouldn't blow out her knee.

Friday Sep 23, 2005 #

Adventure Racing race 19:00:00 [2]

Day 2 of the RTN Champs. Again, see Bash's log.
Trekking, biking on rough hilly roads, and some pack-rafting.

Adventure Racing race 11:00:00 [2]

Raid the North Canadian Champs. An epic race!

See Bash's description- she did a great write-up.
Also, she managed to perservere with a nasty knee, and used her smarts to get us to the podium in classic move-up-from-behind Treehugger fashion!

This day was mostly whitewater paddling with flat sections and trekking. Hardest part of the whole race is a new discipline- canoe-hauling, which consists of heaving, dragging and shoving a fully loaded whitewater canoe solo for 100M or so over rocks, trees and assorted bumps, to save our Captain's knees.
The longer ones where I portaged the boat and my pack on my back were much easier.

Cycling (Commute) 50:00 [1]

Easy commute with the bullet dog to do a final test of the AR pack configuration and racing wheels- now we're off to the RTN.

Paddlng 1:20:00 [1]

Spent some time poking around the shore with Bash on sit-on kayaks. Not a hard paddle, but still fun.

Saturday Sep 17, 2005 #

Hiking 3:09:00 [1]

We hiked the Mizzy lake loop instead of running it in deference to Bash's knee. Still a great trail, and managed to burn off a little of our excessive lunch at Arowhon.

Paddlng 1:20:00 [2]

Paddled with Bash around the lakes near Arowhon, past the rock where we got married. The foot bar/seat pad/back rest combo attached in 30 seconds, and was almost perfect until the bar (collapsible ski pole) collapsed a bit near the end. Before that it let me really use the old lower body and core. We managed to haul that old grumman around pretty fast.

Paddlng 30:00 [3]

Early morning paddle in the mist on a sit-on kayak. Surprisingly good workout.

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Ride on the Minissing trail in algonquin with Bash. She was riding very cautiously because of her knee. My hrm time's off because I had a flat and Bash had some trouble with her HRM transmitter in the first few km, but the riding time of 1:41 may be a PB, even though I'm taking it easier this week. It's a rocky but gorgeous trail!

Note
(rest day)

Rest day today- well, actually I *had* to drive to work as my van's going in the shop over lunch hour. Too bad, a beautiful day out. I'm just not psyched for this taper thing yet:). This weekend we're off to Arowhon Pines in Algonquin for some serious carb loading, paddling and maybe a bit of biking and running (Or not, depending on poor Bash's lame knee.)

Running (Commute +) 49:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 706

Good trot to work today with Bulletdog. Took a detour to get some hills in and 2 swims for the pooch- Hot and sticky again. No intervals or level 4 as I'm in the early taper mode.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1. Felt good- the rib injury's barely noticable, and only in standing 1 arm rowing.

Monday Sep 12, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 50:00 [1]

Easy day after a weekend with lots of hours.
Now it's time to start the taper for RTN

Running 50:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Run with Bash, the recovered T-dog and Bulletdog.
Really nice to run with them all.

Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Second lap with Bulletdog, around Palgrave.
Funny, it used to be that a 2 hour run was a *long* run. I was in the zone and hardly noticed it today.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Paddling on Island lake with Bash. Once I got my footstraps/bar/cushion/backrest set up paddling was great. The Trayling Technique seems to be working. Now I have to figure out how to attach all this without taking an hour in transitons, while Bash and the rest twiddle their thumbs.

Note

OK, re-rigged the whole thing and now I can attach everything in about a minute.

Saturday Sep 10, 2005 #

Cycling long (Rail Trail) 5:30:00 [2] 105.0 km (19.1 kph)

Rode the Cataract- Elora trail and back with Bash. Although pretty boring geometrically (straight and long, easy grades) the scenery was great. Even had drive-by fruitings (Trees so laden with apples I could grab them as we rode by).
Easy long ride, with a bonus lunch in Elora and frozen yogurt!

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 3

Cycling (MTB) 1:15:00 [3]

Ride around Albion Hills- the original 3 musketeers: Crash, Bash and 'Bent (me). Although it was supposed to be a "rest" day for biking, (Long ride planned tomorrow) we ended up doing the Green Monster, Haute Route, Sugarshack etc.
Now I'm switching tires on Bash's bike and mine to semi-slicks for the RTN.

Note

I feel like a bit of a loser today- Woke up to pouring rain and a huge thunderstorm. The rain had stopped by the time I needed to leave for work, but it was still really wet and nasty looking out, so I was a princess and skipped my planned bike ride to work. Now it's bright sunshine, a gorgeous day, and I have to drive back home later :(

Cycling (Rail trail +) 30:00 [3]

Rode to my environmental meeting at a good clip. Although a flat straight trail's pretty boring terrain, it's good for getting to a certain HR and keeping it there. The legs were feeling it from yesterday's hard ride.

Cycling (Rail trail +) 45:00 [2]

Ride home in the dark, + warmup/cooldown from earlier.
I used my mega-LED light at full power for a battery test. I think part of what makes me sleepy during long AR nights on the bike is dim lighting. With this thing cranked it's way eaiser to see, and stay more alert.

Cycling intervals 1:15:00 [3]

Interval ride to Albion Hills, around the entire course and back. This was the "off" portion.
Dunno if it was the conditons, the new tires and wheels or last night's Linguini Primavera at our Anniversary dinner, but I had the most awesome ride, technically speaking. I was so pumped!
I managed to get my 'Bent around virtually everything on the course, except for 2 hairpins on the new section that I have concluded are impossible for my bike. As for the rest- Sugarshack hill, Haute Route hairpin, Derailleur Destroyer on the new trails, Woo-woo singletrack, everything else: Bring it on, Sean! I think it was the best ride I've ever had there.

Cycling intervals 1:00:00 [4]

Here's the "on" portion of the intervals, 15'on, 10' off as per coach K/O. The legs were just great today, even after yesterday's running intervals.

Fungus Watch for Bash- Huge numbers of Amanita Muscaris mushrooms, bright yellow with white warts on the caps. I've never seen so many of these deadly 'shrooms.

Tuesday Sep 6, 2005 #

Running intervals 40:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 706

Intervals as per coach K/O- 10 minutes hard, 5-7 minutes easy. This was the easy portion. My HRM transmitter kakked, so it was harder to set up the intensity.

Running intervals (Commute +) 50:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance 706

This was the "on" part of the intervals. Legs felt good after 4 days of paddling (OK, some pedaling too).

Paddlng 1:30:00 [1]

Our last day on a perfect trip.

Sunday Sep 4, 2005 #

Paddlng 3:00:00 [2]

Part 1 Hard to decide what intensity to call this one. We were paddling for over 5:30, some hard and some of it at an easy pace, so I thought I'd split it up.

Paddlng 2:30:00 [1]

Part 2 of our long paddling day. Over 30km total, although I suspect I went considerably farther by intentionally taking interesting routes.

Saturday Sep 3, 2005 #

Cycling (Pedal Kayak) 1:30:00 [3]

I rigged up my superfast recumbent pedal kayak, and spent the morning darting around the other boats, exploring bays, circumnavigating rocks and generally annoying Bash but getting some biking in.

Paddlng 2:00:00 [3]

Switched to paddling for the afternoon, and again I tried to get a good workout by darting around here and there.

Friday Sep 2, 2005 #

Hiking 45:00 [1]

Short but brisk hike before starting paddling near Killarney.

Paddlng 45:00 [2]

Paddling in chop with a strong tailwind to our campsite.
See Bash's description of the trip- she's way better at it than I am.
