Cycling (Trainer) 55:00 [2]

My 'bent's going in for it's winter upgrade and the weather stinks, so I rode my old 'bent on the dreaded trainer.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3, plus some ski-specific arm work.

Running (Commute+) 40:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Ran the red trail to work, past where the logging has been finished. I threw in hill and speed intervals, and this was to and from the intervals and to work.

Running intervals 22:00 [5]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

3 sets of hill intervals to HR level 5 (90 sec uphill), and later 3 sets of speed intervals, 4 min on 2 off.

Arrived at work drenched.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Dark and very foggy run home. I saw some bike headlights in the Palgrave singletrack and bushwhacked over to see if it was Crash. I chased them on foot but they lost me on the doubletrack.

Cycling (Commute) 52:00 [2]

Sure is dark early! Had to put a flashing collar on the Bulletdog.

Strength (core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core Monday. Groan- haven't done this for a month. Gonna be sore. Also had to watch the "plank" exercises as they are really hard on my lower back.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Orienteering (Thomass Kickoff) 1:23:00 [4]
ahr:178 max:197 shoes: Icebugs 2

Started off well enough and I was running with the leaders, although I probably shouldn't, but at the end of the second box I somehow thought I needed to go back for another control. I managed to get my map switched around so I was looking at "G" in the first box instead of the G in the second, and I had a humiliating 26 minute split as I tried to figure out why the map was all wrong for wa-a-ay too long. Worst of all was that I didn't even need to go back for that control :(

Strength 1:00:00 [1]

A rather feeble workout #2, given that I was tired from the Thomass. I still needed to do the stretching and leg strength, so I did the whole workout.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Early run with K/O, Bash, Bulletdog and the Saturday AM gang to Glen Haffy. Nice being back in our neck of the woods.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [2]

It's so-o-o good to be back on my 'bent after riding those butt-buster, neck bender bikes in NZ- even if they did climb well.

Running (Commute) 25:00 [3]

Hey, the hills were really easy today on the way home. I hardly noticed that I was doing one of my better times home on the full route. Must be all that hill climbing in NZ.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

A somewhat wimpy workout #1- first one in a month.
Working on some quad and hamstring isolation for my funky knee too.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Ahhh, the commute run. Much nicer than driving.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Finally got a Bluebird day, just in time to hike around the base of Mt Cook, NZ.s biggest mountain. Totally clear, gorgeous views of huge sheer cliffs and glaciers. The hike was fairly flat, and would be easy but for a howling gale that had us clinging to the cables on the suspension bridges.

Cycling 2:30:00 [3]

Mountain biking around Wanaka. A bit of everything- lakeside bike trail, purpose-built singletrack, doubletrack on dirt track etc. Great scenery too! Still don't like the Wedgie bikes.

Hiking 6:30:00 [2] +800m
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Routeburn track. We started from the Queenstown side, and hiked up a beautiful river valley in huge beech forests. Huge cliffs and sheer mountains on the sides, but a fairly easy climb until the last few km before the Falls hut at treeline. From there it was a rugged alpine hike in a huge mountain ampitheater to Harris lake and the saddle, where it was snowing. Very different from our other high hikes, and really spectacular.

Hiking 2:30:00 [1] +700m
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Short hike near Queenstown. Started with a cable car, then a nice hike 700M up to a saddle, and did a bit of route finding to take a narrow ridge trail back down.

Hiking 6:30:00 [2] +1500m

Absolutely spectacular hike on the Keppler track near Te Anau with Bash. Up through thick forest to the alpine, and up Mt. Luxmore for one of the best views anywhere- mountains rising very steeply 1500M straight up from the fjord to snow-caps.

Running 50:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Running with Bash on the trail around Lake Te Anau. Very scenic, and it finally stopped raining.

Cycling 18:00 [2]

Now you know I had to try the pedal catamaran! Not as fast as my pedal kayak, but fun.

Hiking 30:00 [1]

Hiking around the Otago Peninsula, where we went to see rare Yellow-eyed penguins. We also saw Royal Albatross, fur seals and sea lions, and a Right Whale in the distance. Out for 2.5hrs, but logged 30 min- some stiff hiking up the mountain back to the bus, etc.

Orienteering race 12:00:00 [4] +2700m
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Wow! Guy Fawkes Rogaine in NZ. Talk about vertical! Thick jungle, very obscure trails, lots of muck. We didn't do all that well, but loved it! The Kiwis found it a bit tough and frustrating too, but there are some awesome Rogainers here. Really amazing cloud forest up on the mountain tops, 1000 metres above the start. We spent the last bit of time struggling up a huge climb for an 80 pointer, which we didn't find, and had to run back hard the last 80 minutes to finish on time.
Nav was more like AR nav- bushwhacking was impossible, and controls were sometimes obscure or possibly misplaced/missing. A tough and fit lot, these kiwis. One team was still missing when we went to bed at 10pm!

Misc (Blackwater rafting) 1:00:00 [1]

Yes, we went rafting in caves by light of glow-worms. Very amazing! We wore wet suits, and did some scrambling, some jumping off waterfalls, and lots of floating and paddling in innertubes, gaping at the glowing ceilings way above us. Mainly tall narrow fissure caves with rushing rivers in the bottom. We came out into a lush forest river and paddled the last bit in the open.

Hiking 7:00:00 [4] +1200m

We did the Tongoriro crossing. Started at the South end, then climbed up over a saddle into a huge flat crater. We kept up a good clip, and although there were some 600 hikers doing the crossing, we were the first and had the crater to ourselves. We went up to the summit of Tongoriro, again practically alone. Got some views of Mt Ngorigo (sp??) which is Mt Doom in LOTR. We hit the crowds on the return, but it was still spectacular. Last hour was through lush forest, to our surprise.
