Strength (Link + Kneehab) 1:00:00 [2]

Saturday Sep 29, 2007 #

Cycling (Rail trail) 2:30:00 [3]

I got the Omega 'bent set up with over-seat steering, and did a ride down to visit Knobless and Gorgeous in Inglewood. Bike worked OK except when 55kg Toby the melon-headed dog tried to climb in my lap and dumped me over.

I may want to move the bars further forward.

I kept the RPMs up in the 90s. Once again, flats are OK but my climbing's not great.

Strength (Home gym) 1:05:00 [2]

Workout #2 + Kneehab.
Went light on shoulder cable press on the left side.

Note- Thumbs-of-Death can feel a bit of a click in my knee now that the ligaments are getting better, so there's something going on with the meniscus all right.

Thursday Sep 27, 2007 #

Note

Saw Dr. Billy W for a 2nd opinion.
He thinks my ligaments in the knee are pretty much better, and what's bad now is the joint itself. No running for a while longer, but hamstring bridge exercises and wall squats. Biking's OK. Also rx an ultrasound or MRI if possible. *#$&!

Wednesday Sep 26, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1. Yes, I'm using bigger weights, but now my shoulder's getting a bit sore from all the blasting workouts since my knee kacked. Plus some kneehab- wall squats, ball bridges, some light quad extensions etc.

Cycling (Commute +) 35:00 [3]
(injured)

Biking's getting better. I rode some extra trails en route, but no singletrack yet. Kept the Bulletdog galloping!

Running's still a no-go, and I can't do a hamstring curl with so much as a bagette, let alone weights. I think something's messed up inside the joint.

Hiking (Commute) 50:00 [1]
(injured)

An easy hike home with T-dog. Yeah, I know, I don't normally log walking the dog, but this time I hiked without ski poles for the first time and the knee was fine.

Monday Sep 24, 2007 #

Cycling (Commute) 45:00 [2]
(injured)

Another high RPM spin to work and back with Bulletdog.

Strength (Link + Core) 1:15:00 [2]

Modified Link workout, plus a whack of core exercises, kneehab and some chinups and cable presses. Getting restless I guess.

Sunday Sep 23, 2007 #

Running 10:00 [1]
(injured)

First run since the injury, a gentle trot on flat dirt road.
Didn't feel very good on the knee.@#%!

Cycling (Rail trail etc) 1:00:00 [3]
(injured)

Actually a good high-cadence spin to the rail trail and around, while Bash and co. were doing the Turkey Trot. Looked like a really fun race, in a familiar area.

Friday Sep 21, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 50:00 [2]

Workout # 3.

Note

Thumbs of death gave me clearance for some easy running on level trails and roads only. No FAC champs for me.

Strength (kneehab) 15:00 [1]

K/O's prescribed quad and hamstring exercises.

Thursday Sep 20, 2007 #

Cycling (Commute +) 25:00 [3]
(injured)

Finally feeling stronger on the bike. Had to hitch a ride home as I had 2 dogs in the afternoon. Knee's still sore to walk around. Today's the day for doc Thumbs of Death to give me the yay or nay for running.

Wednesday Sep 19, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:15:00 [2]

Workout #2 + some kneehab. Starting to heave a bit more weight these days.
Still can't lift anything on hamstring curls on the bad leg, but some gentle ball-wall squats were OK.

Also some lumberjack games on the way to work- finished sawing the mega-log on the trail by hand and got the trail opened up. Man, the pioneers must have been strong!

Hiking (Commute) 50:00 [1]
(injured)

Hiked to work with a trekking pole and T-dog. All went well until I bumped a stick with my bad leg and rotated the foot out a bit- Ouch!! Definitely not ready for off-trail running. Hiking with poles is OK.

Tuesday Sep 18, 2007 #

Cycling (Commute) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

Another easy commute.

The knee's a bit sore again today, and the limp is back. Maybe I'll hike to work with poles next time.

Cycling (Commute) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

Ride home- knee felt better.
Stopped to take a hack at a 30cm diam tree that's blocking a critical downhill with my hand saw. Need to come back with a bow saw to finish it.

Monday Sep 17, 2007 #

Cycling (Commute) 45:00 [2]
(injured)

Another easy commute with The Bulletdog- seems gentle biking is still OK.

Sunday Sep 16, 2007 #

Hiking 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Hike around Kolapore with trekkiing poles while supporting Bash.

Normally I wouldn't log an easy hike, but it's the first decent stroll since my injury. Not too bad with poles on uneven ground. The knee was pretty stiff while sitting around, but after the hiking I was almost walking normally. Doubt I can run for a while though, and the FAC champs is looking dubious.

Saturday Sep 15, 2007 #

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Good solid paddle with 'Goose at Island lake, on a gusty day. Felt good to actually work fairly hard!

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]
(injured)

Easy ride through Palgrave West to the rail trail. Met a buff looking Scooby and Rocky running East and rode back with them.
You know, riding a flat rail trail I don't even know my knee's bad.

Friday Sep 14, 2007 #

Strength (Kneehab) 10:00 [1]
(injured)

A little bit of leg strength according to doc T of D.
Extensions were no problem, and squats against a wall with a ball were OK, but hamstring curls were horrible even with the lightest possible weight well before a 90 degree bend.

Note- a couple of days off hasn't really helped. The knee seems to lock up if I don't keep it mobile. Flat easy riding is best. Wish I was a Roadie right now!

Tuesday Sep 11, 2007 #

Cycling (Kneehab) 50:00 [2]
(injured)

Another very easy commute.
My knee was feeling better but I woke up when Bulletdog lay on it last night- Ouch!

Couple of days off coming up.

Monday Sep 10, 2007 #

Cycling (Kneehab) 25:00 [2]
(injured)

Gentle granny-gear commute. Still no power on the climbs, but spinning along's not too bad. Bulletdog enjoyed the cool weather.

Cycling (Kneehab) 25:00 [2]
(injured)

Knee felt better on the commute home. Bulletdog enjoyed the romp.

Strength (Home gym) 45:00 [2]

Workout #2- upper body only.

Sunday Sep 9, 2007 #

Paddlng 1:15:00 [2]
(injured)

Paddling a very shallow Island Lake with Bash and Ms LD.
Nice to be off the couch.

Note- I got in trouble for taking the pruners out to cut a bypass to the fire damaged trail. "You should be resting".

Strength (core) 40:00 [2]

The dreaded Hard Core DVD. I modified the plank section a bit for my bad leg.

Saturday Sep 8, 2007 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1 plus some very gentle leg extensions and leg curls.

Cycling (Kneehab) 1:00:00 [1]
(injured)

Thumbs-of-Death prescribed some gentle non technical biking.
We rode down to Caledon East for Fro-yo and back on the rail trail.
My knee's actually not bad for gentle biking- Woo-hoo. I guess it's all in line, and no lateral stresses or rotations. I have no acceleration or decent hill climbing, because on my 'bent I need to pull up on the pedals and that's no good at all right now. Still, glad to be out at all. Biking's better than walking for my knee.

Wednesday Sep 5, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:05:00 [2]
(injured)

Workout #3 + some core.

note- Thumbs-of-death feels I've strained the ligaments but haven't done too much damage to the meniscus of my knee.
It's about 40-50% better now- I can walk on it.

Tuesday Sep 4, 2007 #

Note
(injured)

My "good" right knee's kaput after yesterday's fall and all the firefighting after.
I can't bend it or walk on it much now.

Monday Sep 3, 2007 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 + some leg work.

Cycling 1:30:00 [4]

I was having a nice long ride in Albion when my phone rang, and Bash advised me not to take the trails back as the forest's on fire. She was packing up our dogs and some possessions into the Bullfrog van as she spoke.
I hammered back home ASAP, towards a big column of smoke. Not a nice feeling at all.

I managed to skid out on a paved corner in my haste and torqued my knee pretty well.

In the end the fire only burnt the back 5-10% of our property, but the neighboring farm and forest look pretty bad. It seems to have been started by our neighbours to the West when a fire went out of control- on a very windy hot day.

Misc (Firefighting) 1:00:00 [1]

Spent a few hours running around with a pack full of water bladders and the Treehugger dogwash sprayer putting out smaller fires on our property, watching the big flames heading towards us. Luckily they got a pumper up on our neighbour's trails with the help of a huge front end loader, and they got it put out before it hit our hardwood forest.

Looks like the orienteering map of Palgrave will need some work!
Luckily, only an old barn was destroyed and nobody hurt, but there are hundreds of acres of woods that were torched. All in all 9 fire stations were involved. I guess I'll be driving to work tomorrow.

Sunday Sep 2, 2007 #

Running long 2:50:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Easy run with Bash and Bulletdog from Inglewood to The Shed in Belfountain via Forks of the Credit for a soy latte and back.

Saturday Sep 1, 2007 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1.

Also spent some much-needed fiddling time modifying the Omega bike for over-seat steering.

Cycling 1:05:00 [2]

Palgrave E with Bash, who earned her AP name again.
