Running 2:45:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

I wasn't feeling well last night- sadly didn't enjoy my office Christmas party as much as I'd like. Last chance for a long run before Lookout though, so Greg Y and I had planned a Humber Trail run.
I was still nauseous in the morning, but went anyway. Legs were ok but I was doubled over with stomach cramps a couple of times. Greg said we were going well- he said he was working hard to keep up in places where we were doing 5:30 on the uphills, (or he is just a very nice fellow.)
We did 1 mt Tobler when we got back here, and I did a Bazingadog-Skijoring demo.

Felt like I was hit by a truck a few hours later.

Another tongue in cheek Channukah vid from the Maccabeats.
Watch for a cameo from Mayim Biyalik from the Big Bang theory.

Strength (Lumberjack) 1:30:00 [3]

(2,5hrs) Cold enough to split some of the huge logs from our great big pine tree in the front yard. Serious workout! Only a few tonnes left.

Also got to hand-saw two dead trees and one very messy live one fallen on the ski trails, and hauled a load back up the hill in the wagon which was probably the toughest of all in the snow. Got to get a new toboggan!

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [2]

Nice ski with Bash from the door. Some ski-whacking, some nice trails, but a picture perfect day to be out. A little more base and it would be perfect, but for now it's Rock skis. Bazingadog was really pissed to see us ski without him.

XC Skiing 28:00 [3]

Picture-perfect skijor to work wth the big guy. Fluffy fresh snow, sunrise in clear skies, no wind.

XC Skiing 32:00 [3]

Nice night ski home.

Strength (Core) 20:00 [3]

Someone leaked the birthday news to Caron, so we ended up doing 52 reps of 2-stage sit-ups, birdcages, elbow-knee bicycles, then Supermans. 12+12+10+10+8 reps.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Somehow I beat my tailbone raw in core, even with a second squishy mat, so some exercises hurt.

Cookies after made it worthwhile.

Running hills 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

First lap through Charlevoix with the girls, then a second lap where I did some F&M hills, found Mt Tober needs crampons instead of Hokas, and went back to Charlevoix to run the biggest hills there.

Running 55:00 [2]

Decent run to work, where we met 3 Ridgebacks all wearing different coloured coats. Bazingadog would have loved to run with the girls.

Back in the dark, where I met Crash running with Skyerocket.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Nice ski to work with dog-assist, and a good night ski home. A bit sketchy, definitely rock-ski conditions, but I'll take it!

Orienteering race 40:00 [5]

O-cup Glen Haffy.
After a tough week with little sleep I arrived home at 11:30 the night before, so my head and lungs just weren't in the game today.

I'll call this one In The Footprints of The Waddington today- I just hung on as the Duke and Hammer leapfrogged back and forth, and one of the few times I led the control was misplaced. I finished 4th, but I'm not even sure I counted in the first box right. At least it was a nice run in the snowy woods with friends, and a great lunch after. Maybe I'll come back when the snow melts and do it slower solo.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Cool down jog with Hammer.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Woo hoo, first ski of the year!
First lap with the 3 girls, then back to pick up the big guy for a skijoring rocket ride. He's gotten good about stopping when asked as we approach a big log or something, but sure loves to hammer on the flats and downs!

Winter wonderland- my favourite, and what a return from Belize!

Running hills 2:00 [4]

Had a half day off, so we took a jungle boat trip and a trek to see an uncovered Mayan temple at Lamanai. It was excavated by a prof at the ROM, and took 12 years. There are dozens more "hills" which are all man-made but need years to dig out.

I got to trot up this one and galumph down, past a few gasping and wheezing tourists gingerly crawling up and sliding down on their butts. The guide says I have the FKT now, and gave me a medal.

From Belize 2013

Best view in the whole district as it's a very flat area and this is the high point for dozens of km.

I took a borrowed gopro for the trip, including the run up and down, so there may be a Youtube vid coming.

Final clinic day.
This one had its ups and downs- we saw a lot of adults with complex problems, some of which I could have fixed at home but not here with what we had. Others were basically hopeless and all we could do was palliative care or extractions. On the other hand, some of them we were able to do a ton of work for. Very few kids today, but a lot of work.

Shirley gave me a via-like coffee to add to the hotel dishwater that comes out of their coffee percolator.

At a couple of points, to add to the noise of 50 people waiting, 4 dentists suctioning, a compressor and a shopvac nearby and trucks air-braking outside, the rain started to hammer down like I have never seen, on our tin roof. There are no windows up top, so we got a nice shower.

The big guy fixing our equipment. Tom can fix anything, even local political friction. Keeps us safe too- an ex Marine who provided Embassy security in the Middle East.

Most mind-blowing comment from Cathy-
We had to miss the mission last year as we were both diagnosed with cancer. We were heartbroken- that we couldn't come and help the village that year.

Day 3- less mechanical issues, more adults with worse problems. Solid work 8-6 with a short break for lunch.
I even took out a wisdom tooth- ya do what ya gotta do. One kid spend 2.5 hours on the bus to see us, and waited 4 hours. Another needed an adjustment from Monday (not my patient) and it took her 4 hours round trip with a 6 hour wait.

Note

Day 2 report. Tricky morning, with an even bigger lineup of patients out the door waiting for us. My air abrasion unit went down and spent almost an hour fixing it, while my young patient waited patiently in the chair. The mega- humidity caused my loupes (binocular glasses) to fog up, so I couldn't use them or their light, but the Bentblaster was more than adequate.
We got things sorted out, finally moved the damn compressor into a shed and slammed the door so I didn't have to scream across the patient for instruments, and did a lot of good work the rest of the day.

Every minute you spend fixing a machine or taking a pic is time you're not helping all the folks that waited since 8am.

We set up a water cooler with an ozone bubbler and a basin inside.

I bought Tom and Matt a beer when they finally moved these howling machines in the shed. Our vacuum line system runs of a small Shopvac - the bigger quieter one wasn't strong.

shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Long run from South part of the Dingle North to the Tai Chi centre & back.
Great day to be out, and the legs were really good.

North part was very treacherous- frozen mud had 2cm on top that had thawed, as I found out when my Hokas turned into heavy toboggans, and I went flying on my front. Had to be very careful in that section after that, and actually found bushwhacking easier.

On the way back my legs were best around the 2-hour mark, and I felt like I was just flying on the flats. Running out of gas by the time I got back to the car though.

Doesn't look all that fast on the download, but over 1000M climbing will slow things down.

Off for a run of the Charlevoix hills with the deer-crazed BZdog, who saw 4 separate groups run off. Followed up with pole-hiking hills with pack 5x Mt. Tobler and 3x F&M hill.

Ankle is 90%

Old-man plod to work. Ankle is a bit sore, but a lot of icing last night helped.
Knee's also a bit touchy. Definitely feel the hard work from yesterday.
Easy run home in the dark and the snow.

Raid the Hammer Oakville on team Beowulf.

First time racing with both Gallys, and we raced really well together.

We started with a Matrix, and I had control C at the bottom of the valley. I decided to hammer it back to our meeting place around the trail rather than bush straight across but probably lost some time there (40 seconds longer than the way out according to the GPS), and came in pretty pooched after practically redlining it. Shortly after I rolled my ankle pretty well, but managed to walk it off a bit and got back in the game.

Gally's nav was really excellent, and we'd leapfrog all-male teams frequently. Ms Gally and I got the system dialed, with just a light tow between us keeping the team together and at the perfect pace for Gally to nail the nav. Some good solid climbs and slippery descents, but more flat trail/ road running than most.

We ended up getting passed by Team HermeStix at the last control in the bush, and were 4th co-ed. We were back and forth with all-male TarnLoGeddon, but they got us by 20 seconds at the end, so we ended up 10th.
Very happy with that in such a strong field, 20 min back from the overall winner.

Strength 1:15:00 [2]

Heaving and hauling wood.
Our neighbour F got out the chainsaw and cut up at least 20 big trees and Knobless and I took turns hauling loads back, while Bash and M stacked and cleaned up.

Home gym
Did kneehab and partial workout 2 later.

Friday Nov 8, 2013 #

Strength 45:00 [3]

Out sawing up trees that fell across the trail and hauling them off. They're tough because the saw binds like crazy unless you make tons of notches and try to support the tree with logs. Spent quite a while out there.

Note- Finally got my Garmin ANT software working again- it doesn't like Windows 8.1 yet. Had to spend a long time with Garmin logged in to my PC. Ken helped too- so I donated more to AP.

shoes: Salomon FellCross

Out with Bazingadog to run hills in the Charlevoix trails. The biggest hills are off trail, so a fair bit of bushwhacking.

Nice day to be out, but the lad adds a lot of extra resistance by lunging after deer and squirrels in all directions, often dragging me through the choicest burs.
We are both sick of him being on leash.

I finally brought him home and exchanged him for my poles for 6 repeats of Mt Tobler and a few F&M hills.

I was hoping to log the vertical with my Garmin now that I got my ANT stick replaced under warranty but the #@% ANT software won't install.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Knee's been bugging me a bit so back to the Hokas today.
Extra hills on the way in and back. Lots of scrambling over downed trees with the big lad.
Since the clock change it's headlamp time for the return commute.

Running 52:00 [3]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Dogless commute. Wow, there's carnage on the trails near our house after the windstorm- at least a dozen big trees down across the trails. No biking or skiing for a while.

I surprised a deer lying on the little connector trail from our property to our neighbours'. Big buck- took off like a rocket.

Cycling 2:10:00 [3]

Fall Fifty 2013
Spectacular day for the annual Fall Fifty for Sian's birthday.
We (Crash, Goose, Coach LD & the Huets) started on a frosty morning at Chez Huet in Caledon East. We biked to Inglewood, picking up Knobless en route, then up the #%* Grange hill to the Coffee Shop That Shall Not Be Named, back though Forks of the Credit road and back to Knobless HQ.

Paddlng 1:10:00 [3]

From Knobless HQ where we picked up boats and Richard II, down the Credit river to Cheltenham. Beautiful paddle, and shot some pretty good waves here and there with no casualties.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Not sure of the spits here. Hike-jogged from Cheltenham store back to Inglewood with a detour down by the river. Many apples were picked and chomped, before TA back to bikes and up the rail trail to the start/finish for yummies and birthday poetry about sports injuries and aging athletes.

A fine day had by all.
