Cycling 55:00 [2]

Nice commute with the big guy.

Sunday Sep 28, 2014 #

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Picking up controls with Bash in Rocky Ridge from the ARX training session.
I seem to be wandering off to the right too much. Even going slowly with rx glasses I missed a couple.
10 AM

Cycling 40:00 [3]

So nice out- my bike was calling me. Great little ride around the deciduous Palgrave forest.
1 PM

Running race 44:10 intensity: (1:10 @4) + (43:00 @5) 10.11 km (4:22 / km) +113m 4:08 / km
ahr:183 max:215 shoes: Brooks True Grit Red

C3 10K run on a perfect summer day. Having done no speed work at all this season isn't great prep- slowest 10K I ever timed myself on!

Best part was a gangly little kid about 11 who was ahead of me until the half way mark. We were chatting a bit, and I left him on some downhills but said "You'll catch me later". Coming into the finish alone -I thought- he dashed around me, and we finished together. He killed his age group! (I was second geezer)

I watched the HR and this was as hard as I should go without overdoing it.
The max HR spike was an artifact when I passed someone- I kept it between 179 and 185 for the run, 194 at the sprint finish which is close to my max.

Running 2:00:48 [3] 17.3 km (6:59 / km) +520m 6:04 / km
shoes: Hoka Stinson ATR

Fantastic run around the Dingle and Glen Haffy, with some exploring the trails W of the Dingle. Perfect summer weather with fall colours, no wind or bugs. Lots of swims and soaks for the well behaved BZDog. It really doesn't get better!

Note

Light Geek Note from the guy making the Lucifer light- a pro quality light for a cheapo price. I had posted a link about his project earlier. He is using top-end LEDs, drivers and batteries, and can customize the beam etc.

Hi all,
as you see, our crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com wasnt sucessful. But despite this fact, we are STARTING PRODUCTION run of these beautiful Lucifer lights, as we got lot of feedback, encouraging responses and support from our sporting friends. During last three weeks we worked really hard to prepare production and cut down all unimportant costs.

Please, If anybody of you contributed to campaign, write me an email to peter@luciferlights.com if you are still interested in buying Lucifer light. Delivery date 8th December is valid and the introductionary price ($110) also. Its also offer for anybody else who likes and wants to order this light.

We plan to start web blog to inform you about production progress and all details behind it. Also, we made some slight changes (higher waterproofness, lower total weight), which will make this product even better - details later.

Orienteering 48:08 [2] 4.71 km (10:13 / km) +66m 9:33 / km

Running around the North end of the Earl Bales map. Lots of hair-thin trails on the map I could barely see with prescription glasses while standing still. Running with contacts in winter- no wonder they were tricky to spot.

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Easy commute. Man, I love September days!

Monday Sep 22, 2014 #

Running 57:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Easy commute with a slack-leash Bazingadog. Bored/tired? Definitely not the tractor-pull-pooch of yesterday. Back on Singletrack, and ran into McKenzie, who luckily likes to trot at the back while BZdog must be lead dog.

Running 1:35:44 [2] 8.16 km (11:44 / km) +276m 10:02 / km
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Track and Tower loop with Bash and Bazingadog.
Pouring rain and lots of muck and standing water with slippery trails made it interesting to hang on to a wildlife-stimulated BZdog, but all went well. Trail was beautiful none the less. Pics on Bahs's log.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [2]

Nice paddle with the girls to the part of Oxtonge lake we ran around. Bulletdog loves to be Queen of the Canoe, and it's been far too long.
We'd had a great lunch at Arowhon (not dog friendly however) but this trip is all about the pooch while she's still healthy.
10 AM

Running 50:00 [2] 5.29 km (9:27 / km) +180m 8:04 / km
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Run with Bash and Bazingadog around the Beetle Lake loop outside Algonquin. The bug guy was impossible for the first km or so, then settled in. Really nice scenic loop with a great swim half way for the pooch. Fall colours just turned.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Workout #1 home gym- a bit short on time.

Hiking (Commute) 45:00 [1]

Easy hike to work with.... Bulletdog! It was a cool day and she was keen, even though she was at a slow amble by the end and breathing a bit hard. She was frisky again after a little rest at work.

Note

Had my ultra-nutrition consult. Meredith thinks she can solve my gut issues. I'll get a full report soon, but from our phone call...

She thinks the place to start is to lighten up my nutrition- none of this "real food" nonsense. I can probably run on less than I am taking in.

She wants to try me on mainly liquid nutrition, something lighter than Spiz or Vitargo, just a simple sports drink.
More electrolytes, less food.
She suggested I try Tailwind or Scratch mixed with carbopro, assuming I can stand them.

I can try Spiz, but only 1/4 serving Spiz/25 mi.
Less real food. Maybe a few Potatoes, chips.

Fuel in bladder, water in bottle.

Hammer extreme vs s-cap- has calcium.

Pocketfuel as backup if I can't find something I like in T/A, not regular fuel.

Cycling 58:00 [2]

Commute with an extremely well behaved Bazingadog.
He's probably best with a bike as the pace is good for him. He just trots along after the first km or two, and even lags behind on uphills.

On the way home he was sedate until he realized Bash had recently passed by, and was pretty enthusiastic until we caught her 1.5k later.

Running 1:00:00 [2]

Very easy commute with the big guy.

Running 2:15:39 [3] 23.07 km (5:53 / km) +630m 5:10 / km
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

BGY wanted to find Jim Willet who is trying to break the record on running the Bruce trail. Apparently his support crew abandoned ship and he needed help. Goose was game for the hunt too.
We guessed at his speed and joined the trail heading towards him some 22km from his start. After about 5k we finally got a text, and it turned out that he'd passed our starting point and was well South of us. He'd found his van but had no driver. There was poor communication, and confusion between Mono Cliffs and Mono Mills.
We hoofed it back at a good pace, then Goose ran to Creemore to meet Coach LD while we drove to mulmur hills to find Jim. He was a bit dazed from 400k of running, but Cody Gilles was there to run with him. We shuttled his van South of Mono Cliffs, then we ran up to meet them.
We were really surprised to see how fast Cody and Jim were going! They were hammering the downhills, and probably doing 5-6 min kms on the flats. No ultra shuffle!
BGY and I turned back after a while, and got over 20km in, almost all new to us. The Boyne valley has some pretty sustained hills, for Ontario

Jim is doing well, but the soles of his feet are really sore. He's a talented runner but hasn't really planned things to the last detail- his Bruce maps are years out of date and he has no crew, but a friend will drive his van tomorrow.

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Workout 3, foot/kneehab, kbs and some firewood hauling too.
Only at a feeble 6 pull-ups.

Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks True Grit Red

Light and fast run into Palgrave and around the hood with Bazingadog. Feels effortless, other than the glute issue.

Wednesday Sep 10, 2014 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Home gym workout 2, Foothab, kneehab, KBs and core, the whole enchilada.

I could still feel the ribs a bit on some core stuff, so not ready for full on yet but almost there.

Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Easy commute with the big guy.

Note

Good summary article on nausea in ultras.
http://www.succeedscaps.com/articles/fighting_naus...
Not sure I can learn much from this, but maybe I need a ton more electrolytes than I think I do.

Here's another one, and I have a consult booked with one of the contributors.

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Easy commute. Nice to run into Crash and Skyerocket.

Saturday Sep 6, 2014 #

Orienteering race 43:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon FellCross

G-Stix and Hermes' wedding race at Devil's Glen.
I chose to start at the first bonus cp, which turned out to be a beer chug! Just what my gut needs.
Dr.Billy got it down a lot faster, and we were lucky that FB left any there at all!
We had to climb the ski hill, (Steep in spots but oh-so-tiny compared to the Alps) and despite different routes and poor nav choices where Dr B and I managed to get extra climbs in, we had a sprint finish where he got me by 2 seconds. RocsTara and Frankenjack cleaned the course too, but with smarter routes took the well deserved win. Running felt good.
Bash also cleaned the course.

Really nice wedding after- big congrats to the new AR power couple.

Cycling 1:40:00 [2]

Easy recovery tour through North Albion on my way to work to sort out some paperwork and tech issues. Man, I missed the riding there this year.

Stinking hot on the way back.

Thursday Sep 4, 2014 #

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Light and fast run around Charlevoix trails with Bazingadog. Felt like flying along instead of ultra shuffle, and the forest is gorgeous.

Strength 45:00 [1]

Home gym workout 1- time to get back into this a bit and rebuild my feeble upper body and core now that my ribs are good.

Running 31:32 [3] 3.54 km (8:55 / km) +241m 6:39 / km
shoes: Hoka Stinson ATR

Nice morning run out the door and up the Petit Balcon Sud. Great to run and not have to hold back for later. Amazing how fast I got up 200m.

Afterwards Bash and I drove the tunnel to Courmeyeur for lunch and the best Gelato place ever, then did an absolutely stunning return loop via the Grand St. Bernard pass and back through all the UTMB towns. Maybe the most amazing drive of my life, on a perfectly clear day.
