Cycling 57:00 [2]

Rollercoaster with my good big boy Bazingadog. He was panting on the way home- it was warm!

Sunday Apr 29, 2018 #

Orienteering race 3:51:00 [4]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Raid the Rib on team Paw of the Viszla, with Tarno and Trav.

Tarno joined up as a sub for Hammer. The plan was to not break Trav for his big upcoming race. I was pleased we didn’t redline right out the gate. We got messed up with a pack in the Bermuda triangle- it was so lovely we had to do it twice.

We also didn’t have the most efficient plan for Pair’o’dice and the Matrix in hindsight and Tarno ended up doing 2 longer controls, but other than that and a bit of scrambling in Heart of Darkness things went well. The weather improved and the course got more interesting and technical on the East end. I was glad to have spikes, and our nav was clean heading West.

Nice to run into Bash, Dee and Browner who seemed to be enjoying themselves despite Bash’s bashed neck.

Our pace, nav and philosopy was more compatible than I had thought, and I really enjoyed a nice run in the woods with the boys. I felt good running.

Harps, Hansel and Mick were 3:01, the day after Hansel was 2nd at a trail 10k!

Running 30:00 [2]

Easy trot with the dogs. Big test for Brody when Logan took off after the 3 Muskedeers, but he sat on command. Next up was Fabio the turkey with Longan in pursuit, then the 3 deer again. Big boy never faltered, but I needed to be vigilant.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Easy workout 2.

Cycling 55:00 [3]

Finally got a new trainer set up, and tried Zwift.
The new trainer is nicer than my analog one, and I can see Zwift being less boring.

Looks like lots of features and info that I don’t know how to use yet.

The trainer is a direct drive one I got on the MEC gear swap. Hope to use it a bit during muck season.

Running 1:02:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Commute with the big guy, via rollercoaster on the return. He passed the Turkey test, and also passed when Crash’s Sadie took off after Bambo, and he sat beside us. He *was* annoyed.

Ice cascade is finally gone. Singletrack still soggy but rollercoaster doubletrack is dry.

Running 58:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Commute with the big guy. He was apologetically excellent again, even when we met Deathwish Deer, Banzai Bunny and Suicide Squirrel in one small section. He even sat while Banzai dashed right out in front of him.
I never let him get further than half his long line.

The one steep hill was tricky even with spikes, or 4 legs and claws.

Running 57:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Caldera blue

Commute with AD. I thought summer shoes would work, given a forecast high of 17C, and they were a delight on the bare ground but awful on glazed refrozen ice pellets in sections. Had to ski down one steep slope basically tree-to-tree.

Hard to get back up this section as it was water cascading over ice. The rest was soft crust, mud, some dry ground and some deep standing water.

Snowshoeing 50:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (5:00 @4)

Fail.

The plan was to take the two dogs and hike up the ski hills for a bit before it got too soft. Brody was on his long line but was In a feisty mood. At one point I stopped to clean up a mess and he went full Bazingadog out of long line reach despite his collar and us yelling hard. He blasted up the ski hill with us in pursuit and -eventually- came back from the other direction bleeding from a foot.

After that it was back on leash for him and he dragged me around a bit up and down the mountain until we took him back home cleaned him up. We’re both in the dog house.

So Disappointed. I’ve been working so hard with him and he’s been doing so well lately. I think he’s just been playing me.

XC Skiing 1:45:00 [3] 16.15 km (9.2 kph) +254m

Wonderful tour of Highlands with Bash. Amazing conditions! Lots of photo stops.

Running 3:06:36 [3] 17.89 km (10:26 / km) +383m 9:25 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Solid grind with Goose and AD from Camperdown up to Loree, down to Craigleith and rail trail to TH-ABC. Gorgeous sunshine, but we were postholing in shin-deep soft snow for most of it, with the odd bit of crust that would hold Logan but drop us through unpredictably. Very tough going.

It was a bit less of a slog on the rail trail, but still not a cakewalk. Even AD was slowing down.

I went into this one tired but we got home ok.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Nice ride in on firm snow and cleared sidewalks.
The ride back was variable, from fairly good in the shaded woods to a fairly epic slippery slush-fest in the open. Hard work after a busy few days at the office.

I let the big guy off the harness and onto the longline, and he did fine. First time biking with him free-ish. He even passed the test when a flock of turkeys burst out beside us and took off. I happened fo ride over the long line a few times, which gave him pause and maybe reminded him he’s not fully free range.

Strength 20:00 [3]

Caron’s last official class at the C3 studio before it closes. I was tired going in, and a session of groin-splitters didn’t improve things but I probably needed it.

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Tough class for me- I deserve it for just showing up after months of only doing my home stretches and rehab.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Rehab and workout 1

Running hills 55:00 [3]

Solid run with AD, choosing the hilliest route in Palgrave West and bushwhacking + singletrack in Palgrave East. Snow was still firm underfoot- I could have biked. They also smashed through the sidewalk icefall finally.

Running 28:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Late night run home. Snow was pretty firm by 9:45pm.

Tuesday Apr 17, 2018 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Refrozen ice pellets and slush were surprisingly rideable, crunching along in low gear on 3” tires. When we got to town they had plowed all the icy mess onto the sidewalks which were a glacial morass of frozen ice chunks up to waist high. Too hazardous to ride with the big guy on harness so we had to hike-a-bike a good section.

Should have gone out for a second lap in the evening before it slushifies tomorrow.

Monday Apr 16, 2018 #

Running 1:02:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Run to work with AD in rain turning to snow. Firm crust in many places, but deep slush in some. Not too bad- better than my staff who tried to drive.

Slushy slosh home was harder work.

Sunday Apr 15, 2018 #

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [3]

Out in Palgrave West with both dogs in turn. Conditions are good- the ice pellets make a solid base even as they ping off you. Rain didn’t come yet.

Strength (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [3]

Banged some frozen logs out of the bush and hauled a huge load with spiked shoes and poles.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Workout 3 as it starts to drizzle and freeze.

Saturday Apr 14, 2018 #

Running 42:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Out with the hounds in pelting ice pellets.
Quite a few more trees down on the trail along the North border of Palgrave East with the farm.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:05:00 [3]

Spin as the ice rains down.

Friday Apr 13, 2018 #

Paddlng (Erg) 1:00:00 [2]

Trails are very soggy, so I worked out inside.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 2 plus rehab.

Running 28:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Back to glare ice...

Wednesday Apr 11, 2018 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Easy workout 1 and rehab.

Running 1:30:00 [3]

Nice 2-dog run before the mud and ice melts. Several big trees across the k-bash/Wheelie connector trail.

The big guy needed more voice control to stay in range in the first half. He was well rested and interested in the wildlife but did OK.

Night run home with just the big guy- on leash. Heard lots of coyotes.

Tuesday Apr 10, 2018 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Beautiful crisp winter ride with AD on the Rollercoaster. Had to drive back in my shockingly clean van after service.

Monday Apr 9, 2018 #

Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Easy trot home with the big guy, who was perfect hands-free.

Sunday Apr 8, 2018 #

9 AM

Running 1:58:34 [3] 16.59 km (7:09 / km) +551m 6:08 / km

Run with Gally, Goose and Logan the adventuredog.
Without the big boy’s help, I was at the back of the bus up the ski hill. I need a more gradual warmup apparently.
Up top we chugged along pretty well until Gally got out front and set a faster pace with AD, and Goose and I just hung on. Fast blast of the switchbacks too. Good solid run.

Saturday Apr 7, 2018 #

Running 1:45:04 [3] 13.01 km (8:04 / km) +490m 6:48 / km

Loree loop with Goose, Bazingadog and Logie. Nice run, full-on winter conditions.

Friday Apr 6, 2018 #

Strength 30:00 [2]

Easy first part workout 3

Thursday Apr 5, 2018 #

Cycling 28:00 [2]

Winter wonderland ride to work with the big boy on his harness.

Wonderful ride, even though I snapped my chain and had to fix it with chilly fingers. Still made it to work on time.

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Snow was gone but the ground still hard. We did the grind up the Rollercoaster, and Bzdog found the Three MuskeDeers again, but only accelerated us up to 25kph down the trail as we’re bikejoring.

Wednesday Apr 4, 2018 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Full workout 2 + rehab.

Paddlng (erg) 20:00 [2]

Howling winds out, so I broke out the trainer.

Cycling (Trainer) 40:00 [3]

Booooring spin.

Tuesday Apr 3, 2018 #

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Run in to work with the big guy on longline and collar.
He was doing fine hands-free, until Palgrave East where we spotted a deer standing right on the trail staring at us. Oh oh... I had my thumb hovering over the remote collar button and got a hand on the long-line, and told him to SIT.

Son of a gun- he instantly sat there and watched the deer!! I never needed the collar or longline. As we got closer, I could smell deer, and 2 more ran right in the bush beside us. He was on max alert, and stared a lot into the bush for the next 200m, but never needed more than voice.
Holy cow!

Running 32:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Big guy no-hands again. He politely asked me if we can take the long way via the switchbacks, so we did. One moment where I had to get his attention with the collar, otherwise perfect. Very mucky in spots.

Monday Apr 2, 2018 #

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Razor

Commute with AD with some speed intervals. Went down hard on some wet shiny ice- stupid Razors.
Also a lap at home with a flawless BZdog on his long line.

Sunday Apr 1, 2018 #

Strength 40:00 [2]

Easy workout 1 plus much overdue rehab.

Running 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Uragano

Brody’s biggest challenge yet- Haffy and Dingle with AD and BGY.
He was mostly free on his longline and collar, in a less familiar area with lots of squirrels and deer, and AD prancing around.

Not as good as last time. Moments of brilliance, but also a lot of telling him to SIT, and a few buzzes on the collar. I had to step on the longline a few times too. In the second half he sat on command while AD rocketed off after a squirrel at one point, ran beautifully in the open fields, but in a different venison-scented spot got so distracted that he ignored me and the collar, and I had to grab the line.

AD has learned to run just out of longline radius after the big guy schooled him for being a pain.

A bit psychologically tiring having to be in voice control all the time, but he had soooo much more fun than every other time on leash. Not ready to ditch the emergency longline yet.
