Storm Trek Elite with Tarno. He’d raced hard last weekend and pulled a hamstring, but was game to race. We started paddling at near zero temps and thick pea-soup fog, which burned off into a gorgeous fall day. We were able to move up and pass the wave before us, but Chad and Jay cruised by in their pro boat (and big engines). Last time portage wheels let us run the portage, but this time the wheels fell off, literally. (The H2O is too wide for the straps we had).
On to the bikes, then the first trek. Tarno pinned the nav, but with his bad leg was not running like his usual Viszla style. Towing wouldn’t have helped.
Next bike leg was long and hilly. I was feeling good and climbing well but a miscommunication cost us about 10 min. Tarno put the hammer down a bit after that and we caught several of the teams that had passed us.
Next trek we had to mostly hike as Tarno was hobbling, so bushwhacked instead of running around. Again, nav was spot-on.
Back to the bikes. This far into a long hilly ride I started to feel it while Tarno seemed to get stronger, and I was dry and had to refill water. A mini coke from Tarno was a godsend. The riding was absolutely spectacular on a perfect day, even if we were both feeling the hills.
Final trek up the lookout wasn’t fun for Tarno but he toughed it out, then a final hilly ride to the finish.
We ended up winning Masters, but a bit further back overall than we hoped after last year’s 2nd overall. Great racing with Tarno - he’s tough.
Chad and Jay crushed it over an hour faster than us but lost their SI, and winning team of 2 male was about 5 -10 min ahead of us. I think the Weersinks and Attack from Above 4 person teams were 40 min ahead of us too. We ended up 8th overall, in a strong field.
Bash and Coach LD came in strong, second in their category.
Final Storm the Trent was phenomenal. It’s run like clockwork, and the course and weather were superb.
Scoot back to Caledon, bbq’d peaches for a Caprese salad (with LD tomatoes, fresh basil and arugula) for the Rosh Hashanah pot luck, then down to Toronto with the dogs. Despite the sunny afternoon we set up a big canopy to eat outside on Mom’s patio. With the 2 tables and sitting a bit apart we just fit under. (Bash was a bit exposed at the edge, but under an overhang) Good thing, as torrential rain started, then thunderstorms. The roof gutter overflowed and we had a firehose pounding down right beside Bash and me. It was so loud we had to yell to be heard. Poor Bash got soaked, the dogs were drenched, Mom had to eat with an umbrella over her- but we still had a good time.

TOC Turkey trot. Planned to start with the South map then move North as time permits. Good plan, but 20 minutes of errors early on (read the frickin control description- I was looking in deep reentrants rather on the adjacent spur) had me skipping the North map and sprinting back to minimize the damage. Rusty!
Got the carbon work finished on the Kodiak bike! 2 layers of carbon-kevlar, one layer straight carbon fiber, clamped and compressed each layer, then through-bolted.

Supposed to chase Steve on his e-Bike from Bellwood, but he got a flat tire en route on his car.
Rail trail to Inglewood, then up the escarpment trails to Belfountain. Solid ride, and I met Knobless for coffee at the bike shop cafe. Heard a crack from the Kodiak's frame just West of Caledon East, so rode gently home. The Carbon Wizardess’s 2020 repair had split a bit but the bolts still held.
Veinbuster happened to be coming by for some lumberjack work, so I got an engineer- ‘bent rider opinion and help on the repairs.
Long day at work made extra complex by an overnight flood due to a broken waterline, (Some installer bypassed the overnight shut-off valve) but on the way home I found a big new section of well-made singletrack which made up for it.
