Cycling (Commute) 1:00:00 [2]

Still in active recovery mode. Nice ride with the bulletdog.

Strength (Core workout) 15:00 [2]

Core workout and balance. Again, not too hard.

Monday May 30, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 55:00 [2]

Still in Active Recovery mode.
This AM on my ride I went through a meadow where the mist was rising, illuminated by beams of sunlight shooting through the trees. I have the best commute in the world- and wish I had a camera!

Strength (Home machine) 45:00 [2]

Easy workout #1, still recovery mode.
Also did balance board.

Sunday May 29, 2005 #

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance 807

Easy jog with the dogs to loosen the legs from yesterday.
They're a bit sore where my calf muscles cramped.

Adventure Racing race (ESAR) 1:00:00 [5] **
ahr:171 max:194 shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

ESAR adventure race in Caledon with Thumbs-of-death and WC from Hunger, racing as team Tree Huggers from Mars.
Hauled pretty hard in the first run especially.
We had a good nav section, and spiked the CPs.
We got the lead and managed to hold on to win overall!

Adventure Racing race (ESAR) 3:12:00 [4]

The rest of the ESAR race. The intervals seem to have paid off- felt good until the last few km on the bike when my calf muscles cramped a bit, with the second place team Storm The Trent hot on our heels. We made a few small nav errors on the bikes, but were clean on all the trek nav. Had a good paddle too, thanks to a practice session the evening before.
T of D re-injured his ribs and had trouble breathing, but with a bit of good teamwork we finished strongly. WC is a machine, and a great teammate.

Tree Huggers from Venus were first female overall too- that's Bash, Luscious and our friend Gorgeous!

Cycling (Commute) 1:00:00 [2]

Easy ride- tapering for the ESAR in Caledon.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

Still at ApEx, but now post-race. Got in a nice run while the racers were sleeping it off the next AM, along the Sunday River downhill ski area.
When I got back they'd all gone for breakfast 30 minutes earlier, and I was in hot water:(
Next time, instead of bringing a bike stand I'll bring my trainer and ride it in the TAs. Better than standing shivering in the rain.

Running (Support-crew sneak run) 45:00 [3]
ahr:155 shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

On support crew for the Terranauts at ApEx May 20-24.
It turns out that the organizer is a TA (Transition Area) Nazi- Nobody is allowed to leave the parking-lot-sized transition area for any reason short of hospitalization once we've checked in, and we were to drive from TA to TA as directly as possible. Basically I was in TA jail for stretches up to 24 hours- pretty tough for a hyperactive guy. This one time I got my crew-mates to drop me off on the highway for a run while they got gas and groceries, and they picked me up when they caught me. Wildlife for Bash- TA 3 was circled by a Bald Eagle.

Running tempo 25:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance 807

Short on time today so I had to go for quality. Hard run w/o dogs through the Charlevoix route to the Lookout Hill.

Running intervals (Hill intervals) 15:00 [5]
ahr:177 max:189

Since I have some off-days coming up, I did intervals on the Lookout Hill. The first one felt easy, the next 4 not so much.
Wildlife for Bash- Flock of 9 turkeys, a chorus of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, and a Golden Winged Warbler.

Running (Commute) 27:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 807

Easy run to work at T-dog's pace.

Tuesday May 17, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 1:10:00 [3]

Commute to work and ride home around the SS and red trail to the killer hill for intervals with Bulletdog.
I decided not to include speed-pumping Bash's packraft later that evening to test it for her before ApEx.:)

Cycling hills (Intervals) 40:00 [4]

Hill intervals- 2.5 minutes all-out climbing on the bike up the big hill from the pond, then back down. 10 sets in all. These intevals hurt so much that I was going to call it a 5, but my heart rate only went to 179.

Monday May 16, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [2]

Supposed to be an easy day today. Bulletdog's not tired from yesterday. What does it take?

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [1]

Easy ride home- rest day for legs.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout # 1, and spent the time between sets vacuum bagging e-load for the Terranauts.

Sunday May 15, 2005 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 807

Run with Hingo on the Humber Trail.
Wildlife for Bash- A coyote that Bulletdog sprinted after.

Running 30:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance 807

Faster part of run with Hingodude. He's quick!

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 807

Cool-down lap at home with T-dog.

Saturday May 14, 2005 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Rail trail- warm up

Cycling 40:00 [4]

Was running behind sched to meet Bash and Skidder with boats tied on- good incentive to put the pedal to the metal and hustle home.

Paddlng 30:00 [2]

Practice on Island Lake with the Terranauts including Bash. I always thought Bash's kayak was fast, but these guys and gal can sure move a canoe!

Note
(rest day)

Feeling bagged today so I took a rest day.

Thursday May 12, 2005 #

Running (commute) 25:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 706

Feeling a bit tired today. Easier jog in nice cool air.

Running hills (Commute) 20:00 [5]
shoes: New Balance 706

I decided to "Suck it up Princess" and get my hill intervals in. Ditched my pack (Extra heavy with a large jar of chicken soup for Bash) and did 5 sets hard.

Running warm up/down (Commute) 25:00 [2]

Warm up and cool down for the intervals IE the run home.

Wednesday May 11, 2005 #

Cycling (MTB) 2:00:00 [3]

Rode to Albion Hills, and rode the 24 hour course and the O-cup course. Some of the older hardwood course was very goopy- on one hill my rear wheel mudded up and kept spinning 'til I slid down backwards. My AR tires aren't great for this.
The pine trails were great, and the new singletrack East of Duffy's is really excellent!
Wildlife for Bash- 9 deer, 5 turkeys, a Wood Thrush and a Rose Breasted Grosbeak. A great morning.

Cycling (MTB) 50:00 [4]

Harder part of ride at Albion.
Definitely ditched that cold now!

Running (Commute) 30:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance 807

Slow jog to work with both dogs- T-dog's not very fast when it's hot.

Tuesday May 10, 2005 #

Running (Commute) 32:00 [3]

While it's cool, got a good stiff run in. Had to add some extra distance, so I ran some of SS Singletrack for agility. Legs feel strong, and I'm 95% better.
Wildlife for Bash- Northern Waterthrush, Rufous Sided Towhee.

Running (commute) 29:00 [2]

Easy jaunt home (smog alert once again)

Strength (Weights- home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Thought I'd get some exercise in my cool basement while it's hot and foul outside. Weights, plus core and balance. Should be able to go for a long early ride tomorrow if I've already done my weights.

Monday May 9, 2005 #

Cycling hills (commute) 47:00 [4]
max:180

Hill intervals. Wanted to get some hills in before today's smog advisory kicks in. Sets of 1:15 up and down, HR to 180. Did 4 repeats on the same hill, then hammered 5 others before work. Made a point of not coasting up to the base of the hills, but starting from a crawl. Bulletdog thought I'd lost my mind, but was happy to drink from my bike bottle..
Wildlife sightings for Bash- Humber River Hippo (Bulletdog), White Throated Sparrow calling.

Cycling 1:40:00 [2]

Took the south part of Salty Steven Singletrack home, so I wouldn't ride too fast for bulletdog in the heat and smog. The real skidder's been in there and cleaned out the fallen logs.
Also biked the rail trail to my environmental meeting and back. Kind of ironic that everyone else drove there on a smog day.

Sunday May 8, 2005 #

Running 30:00 [1]

Easy run to loosen the legs up a bit. Wasn't all that tired from the race.

Saturday May 7, 2005 #

Adventure Racing race (061100) 6:11:00 [4]

SAC Bon Echo with Bash and The Minister.
Feeling about 85% better. Even though we weren't "racing" I confess I paddled pretty darn hard so Bash could take it easy- but she didn't, of course. Passed a lot of teams on the water.
Took the boat for the long portage myself, but I couldn't run much with it. Bash could barely walk on the portage, so she did the sensible thing and dropped out at the T/A. The Minister and I were disappointed but glad Bash would get warm and dry, and went on. I felt confident about the nav, even spiked CP6 according to UTM, and also found the misplaced manned "CP6" before the cut-off. There was quite a lot of controversy about that one. Promised Bash we wouldn't do the advanced, but we had a good trek and bike home with the Monex Terranauts. Probably finished in top 1/3- 1/4 or so (but unranked), but who knows with this race. If we had Bash we would have tried the advanced trek, but I'm glad she didn't wreck herself this soon before APX.

Thursday May 5, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 20:00 [2]

Vitamin X worked- I'm feeling 70% better! Trails are reasonably dry for biking too.

Wildlife report- Bulletdog took off after 4 adult deer, but remakably she stopped on a dime when I yelled.

Cycling (Commute) 22:00 [3]

Ride home with bulletdog.

Wednesday May 4, 2005 #

Cycling (Commute) 30:00 [1]
(sick)

I really need to try the bike before the race, so I wobbled along to work at an easy pace. Actually didn't hack too much- may finally be getting better.

Strength (Machine) 40:00 [1]
(sick)

Easy workout with some stretching and core.

Tuesday May 3, 2005 #

Hiking (Commute) 45:00 [1]
(sick)

Feeling even worse today (Day 8). Couldn't jog at all, barely level 1. That's it, time for Vitamin X (Amoxil)

Monday May 2, 2005 #

Running (Commute) 37:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: New Balance 807

Did a jog-walk to work, about all my lungs will allow right now.

Running (commute) 38:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: New Balance 807

Another slow jog-walk. Legs feel fine, but lungs feeling worse.

Sunday May 1, 2005 #

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: New Balance 807

Nav practice with Hingo. Still can't run, but at least I can hike without too man y coughing fits. Starting to get better, just in time to taper for Bon Echo.
Also did some core and balance, but won't count it.
