Strength (Weights) 45 [2]

Workout with The Minister at the Chateau Wong in YVR

Friday Jul 29, 2005 #

Running (Commute) 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 706

Easy commute with the Bulletdog. Nice and cool this morning. OK, so much for recovery, now it's time to taper for the Rogaine.

Cycling race 8:45:00 [3]

RTN Bike leg 2. What should have been an easy 83km on dirt and paved roads was a 100km ride that I spent battling horrible sleep monsters for 3-4 hours, despite 4 catnaps and 2 caffeine pills. Also had a slow flat :(
I was disappointed as my biking's been really good, but training's irrelevant when you're seeing a wobbling black tunnel with 2 Bashes in front, with a canoe on their handlebars! I don't know how you train for that.

Paddlng (Second paddle leg) 6:00:00 [4]

RTN Final leg. Worked pretty hard on this one, trying to finish before the course closed. We were the last team to cross the finish, but were unranked.
I'm glad we didn't throw in the towel after CP1 but kept on and finished the course after TA2.
Only 4 teams out of 22 finished ranked.

Adventure Racing race (Trek and Rappel) 6:00:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

RTN Trek, Rappel and River Scramble.
Fairly easy bushwhacking to a very scenic rappel, more bushwhacking to trails where we hiked rather than ran (since we were unranked anyway), and an interesting river scramble which involved splashing, wading and swimming.

Saturday Jul 23, 2005 #

Adventure Racing race (Trek section) 8:00:00 [3]

RTN Deerhurst. Not our best trek- we ended up missing CP1 and returned to the start 8 hours later, continuing unranked. We hitched a ride, and got short-coursed past bike leg 1 to the paddle.

Paddlng race 5:30:00 [4]

RTN Deerhurst Paddle leg 1. This went well- we had one of the fastest times, in part thanks to Bash's nav and our familiarity with this kind of drag/paddle twisty river.

Cycling 30:00 [1]

Easy ride to work, testing the 'Bent bike out fully loaded with AR pack etc, to make sure the rear wheel doesn't rub the pack. I'm on taper now for RTN Algonquin

Tuesday Jul 19, 2005 #

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 [2]

An easier ride today with the lads on the TDF. I resisted the urge to chase the breakaway on the hills, as I'm supposed to be tapering.

Monday Jul 18, 2005 #

Running 26:00 [2]

Slow easy jog to work.

Sunday Jul 17, 2005 #

Cycling 2:30:00 [2]

It was rainy this AM so The Minister of Procurement and I rode the Humber trail down to the waterfront trail and up to Cherry Beach and back. Very quiet at 6:30, but got a bit busier later. A pretty easy ride, just time in saddle.

Strength (Home gym +) 1:00:00 [2]

Woukout #2 while watching the Tour. I also should include some level 5 removing and lugging of a 300lb soaking wet carpet out the basement, but I didn't.

Cycling (Trainer) 2:00:00 [2]

An easier but longer ride to the TDF today. Sections I rode hard, but other times I fiddled with the bike to get it AR-ready. This looked like the all-time nasty TDF ride, with 5 mountains. Apparently these guys burn up to 30 calories a minute on the big climbs.
After this it's taper-time for RTN.

Running 2:15:00 [3]

Ran up the Don valley trail with Bulletdog, back down to Earl Bales and pretty much every trail I could find. Fairly cool at 7AM, but I was drenched when I got back.

Friday Jul 15, 2005 #

Paddlng 1:15:00 [3]

Paddling Island Lake with Hingo. The Trayling form's coming back, and we had a good paddle.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:03:00 [3]
ahr:140 max:169

Rode the TDF in the cool basement. I had a hard climb up the Col with David Montcoutier, and couldn't wait to be over the top. Also really pushed on the sprint with the lads.

Thursday Jul 14, 2005 #

Note
(rest day)

Today's planned workout and bike training session of 2.5 hours (TDF Time) got canned when we had a 4hr power failure and a flood in the basement. I guess mopping up with towels by headlamp doesn't count as training :(

Wednesday Jul 13, 2005 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Rode from home to and around Albion. I managed to make it over the Haute Route for the first time this year. It's an off-camber sharp turn that's almost too narrow for my 'Bent bike. Sugarshack was easy! The trail's bone dry, and the deerflies are attacking on the hills like T-Mobile pestering Lance.

Running intervals 16:00 [5]
shoes: New Balance 706

Speed intervals- level 5 for 6-7 minutes, then easier for 7 min. These were hard!

Running intervals (Commute) 40:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 706

The rest of the commute, including the "off" part of the intervals. It wasn't as easy a run as it should be, as our speed intervals took us a bit too far and had to hustle to make it back to work on time. Wildlife for Bash- We spooked a grouse, which flew right at bulletdog's head and almost was a snack. Also saw a coon run up a tree, and a hellish paving contraption the size of a locomotive which spooked the bulletdog.

Hiking (Commute) 38:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance 706

Too hot, smoggy and buggy for Bulletdog to run home so we hike/jogged. Looking forward to watching the Tour in the cool basement.
Wildlife for Bash- Bulletdog caught Fabio the turkey gobbling down the ripe raspberries, but chased him off to save them for T-dog to hoover down.

Strength (Home Gym) 45:00 [2]

Workout #1 while watching the Tour. I'd hop off my trainer during commercials and get sets in, while Bash and the dogs watched bemusedly. I guess I look a bit funny in cycling shoes, underarmour shorts, HRM strap and headband, dripping wet.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:40:00 [2]

Rode the trainer watching the Tour. I took it mostly easy, except climbing Courchevel with Lance, Michael and the Spanish lads. Great day on the Tour! Wildlife for Bash- 2 baby bunnies and some hummingbirds right out the window.

Monday Jul 11, 2005 #

Note
(rest day)

Rest day for the tour and for me.

Sunday Jul 10, 2005 #

Cycling (MTB + Trainer) 2:30:00 [2]

I did the Tour de Palgrave today. Rode every single bit of Salty Stephen Singletrack, all the doubletrack and the "Charlevoix" figure 8. Mostly took it easy, as I had a level 2 ride planned. Got to practice my bikewhacking as there's a huge tree down on the trail.
Wildlife for Bash- Deerflies, deerflies and more deerflies.

I also rode my trainer along with Michael Rasmussen on the real Tour as he owned the climbs with his mega-breakaway.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

The harder section of the riding. The Salty Stephen is so technical that it's impossible to ride level 2 on the climbing sections, so it was at least level 3.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 while watching the first part of the Tour de France.

Saturday Jul 9, 2005 #

Running 2:30:00 [3]

Humber trail run with K/O, Hingo, Thumbs-of-death and the bulletdog. Despite needing to get up at 5AM it was a good run.
Wildlife for Bash- Deer and Fawn taking a morning dip.

Friday Jul 8, 2005 #

Running (Orienteering) 3:11:00 [2]

Picking up Controls from the Night Raid and Navstock Long Course with Bash. It's a lot more fun when you have time to read the map! We tried to approach controls from a direction different than during the race. Also picked up 6 golf balls, and barely ourtran a thunderstorm!

Paddlng 1:30:00 [3]

Paddling practice with Bash and Hingo on the Orangeville lake. We really haven't paddled at all except for races ever since hydrospinning stopped, and it took a while to get back into the rhythm of it but felt good once we got going. Great day to be out!
Wildlife- 2 Ospreys.

Thursday Jul 7, 2005 #

Strength (Home Gym) 30:00 [2]

Got home tired after going to an open house after work, but managed to get myself to the machine with the Tour on TV. I ended up riding the trainer (Couldn't resist riding while the tour was on) and hopping off during commercials to get sets of weights in. This was the weight portion.

Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 [3]

Riding while watching the Tour again. I was going to go easy, but got on the break away with Christophe. I really hoped he was going to make it, and I was really hammering in that last 700M when he was almost caught. I just about fell off the trainer when the poor guy wiped out so close to the end! He deserved to win that stage.

Wednesday Jul 6, 2005 #

Cycling intervals (MTB) 52:00 [4]

Rode to Albion Hills for speed intervals- 15' level 4, 10' off.
It's hard to keep consistent when you're doing downhill singletrack during the "on" part or climbing big hills on the "off" part, but it's fun. Nice ride. Suprisingly good technical ride, even made it around my nemesis, the turn on the new singletrack where I broke my derailleur last time.
Wildlife for Bash- almost hit a snapping turtle bigger than my helmet on the last 3k singletrack in the middle of the hardwood forest!

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

The rest of the ride to, through and home from Albion Hills, including the "off" parts of the intervals.
Made it up the sugarshack hill without even hitting HR of 170, that's a first. Especially good considering I was using my AR tires and things were a little damp from last night's rain.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 706

Run to work with Bulletdog. Legs pretty tired from the speed intervals on the bike this AM, but they got better.

Running (Commute) 26:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 706

Jog back home, still not quite dark after my evening office!

Tuesday Jul 5, 2005 #

Note
(rest day)

Had a BBQ at our place for my environmental group. They toured our solar panel system and I got to drive a Prius hybrid! Watched the last 30 min of TDF but was too lazy to ride my trainer.

Monday Jul 4, 2005 #

Cycling (Trainer) 25:00 [2]

It's been a bit busy, and with T-dog recovering from surgery I haven't been riding to work.
Instead I rode along with the last 15km of the Tour after my weights workout. I tried to keep the same cadence as the riders. Boy, they turn over fast! I was going to make it a slow easy ride, but couldn't resist the final sprint and hammered along with Tom Boonen.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:15:00 [2]

Worked out while watching the TDF. Better than watching it from the couch, and it's nice and cool in the basement.

Sunday Jul 3, 2005 #

Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance 706

Got in a little running before everyone else woke up at the tcottage.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 [3]

Didn't get to paddle at all. :( When we got home I rode the trainer while watching the Tour De France. Rode easily with the Peleton, but went all-out for King of the Mountain and the final sprint.

Saturday Jul 2, 2005 #

Note
(rest day)

Going up to Muskoka to see Jesus Christ Superstar. Hope to get some paddling in tomorrow.

Friday Jul 1, 2005 #

Cycling long (MTB) 3:15:00 [2]

Nice easy ride from home to Albion Hills then back to Palgrave and around with the whole core team (Bash, Hingo and The Minister of Procurement) + WC, Mrs WC and the Minister of BMX. We did mostly doubletrack, and had a sociable time of it. Nice day, good ride, great company.
