Paddlng 1:10:00 [3]

Nothing like an impending thunderstorm, a stiff headwind and fish-and-chips in Killarney to get those kayak paddles flying. Glad we brought them, even if the dogs prevent proper lower body use.

Portage (Portage) 45:00 [3]

Assorted portages. After the monsters of the last few days, 750M with canoe and pack is a piece of cake.

Paddlng 1:30:00 [1]

Nice paddle home (the usual way with canoe paddles). The dogs are worn out!

Sunday Jul 30, 2006 #

Portage 50:00 [3]

Back over the monster portage. This time it was cooler and didn't seem as gruelling. We also got to put the boat in a beaver pond in the middle and paddle a couple of hundred meters while the dogs swam.

Paddlng 2:00:00 [1]

We paddled from Great Mountain lake to David Lake, and found a great campsite up high on a rock slope. Later we took out the double blades for an hour's evening tour.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

We hiked the ridge behind our campsite for a surprisingly long distance, with many blueberry stops for all of us.

Hiking 1:00:00 [2]

Daytripping from Great Mountain Lake. We paddled over to Little Mountain Lake, which is an almost unreal shade of blue, then hiked the ridge trail for a while. The white quartz is slippery when wet, and some of the scrambles up cliffs were too much for the dogs, so we cut it short. We weren't sure if T-dog was up to it endurance-wise, but she's fine.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [1]

We had to wait out some heavy rain and a thunderstorm this AM before heading out on a day trip to Little Mountain lake. Also did some kayak paddling in the evening.

Swimming 15:00 [2]

Tried some variations on goggles, snorkel, lifejacket and flutterboard (Thermarest) for the upcoming Adventure Swimming discipline. T-dog insisted on rescuing me continuously. I did find that I swim a lot faster with the snorkel and goggles, but the thermarest made no difference without fins.

Note

I certainly felt my back after yesterday. I did a lot of stretching and some yoga, and alternated sitting and squatting rather than just reclining in our Thermarest chairs, which seemed to hurt.

Paddlng 5:00:00 [1]

Trip to Killarney with Bash and the Beasts. Sadly Knobless and Gorgeous had to cancel last minute due to nasty illness. We headed in from Johhny Lake, through David and up to Great Mountain Lake. Very nice to be on a spectacular canoe trip rather than a race for a change. My back wasn't too bad paddling.
We had to wait quite a while at one portage for traffic to clear- a mother moose and calf. Mom was having lunch, and was in no hurry. Wow!

Portage 1:45:00 [3]

Various portages, from some small ones to mid-sized 750s, to the 3000M beast from David to Gt. Mtn. That one was tough with our heaviest canoe (holds 2 dog though) and a medium sized pack. My back was tolerable, so I guess I'm almost recovered. Bash had a monstrous load in her pack. It wasn't buggy, but was hot, and there were some downed pine trees that made it fairly gruelling, close to zone 5. Still, the guidebook recommends 3.5hrs and we took 1:06.

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Ride down to Albion and around. The North East trails have some waist-high logs down and a lot of debris. I skipped the Woo-woo singletrack and the Haute Route in deference to my back, which wasn't too bad but I don't want to push it.
The sandy bits are nice and firm after all the rain last night.

The new SID fork eats 10" logs for breakfast!

Tuesday Jul 25, 2006 #

Running (commute+) 30:00 [2]

It was hot, buggy and it's so-o-o much better than driving!!
My back's 90%.
I stopped to cut some branches blocking the trail.
The route to work up the Red Trail towards Reddington is going to need some serious chainsawing.

Running (commute) 25:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Easing back in to my regular routine.

Monday Jul 24, 2006 #

Cycling (commute+) 1:00:00 [2]

Finally, my back's good enough to ride again.
It felt OK on my ride, but I need to do a little more work on the lumbar support. The extra riding was when I dropped something and had to go a long way back to find it.

Saturday Jul 22, 2006 #

Running 35:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

First run since my injury. I took it easy, but the back felt OK. Slight twinges on uphill, otherwise not bad at all.
I didn't pay for it afterwards either.

Thursday Jul 20, 2006 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Still taking it easy. I did more stretching with more range than before, and I feel it today.

Wednesday Jul 19, 2006 #

Hiking 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Finally up to a hike with Bash and the beasts, to survey the damage from the Microburst.

My back is about 75% better today, but I'm leery of doing anything hard and having another setback.

Tuesday Jul 18, 2006 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Did nothing yesterday but stretching and balance, as well as a visit to Thumbs-of-death. The back feels a little better today, even after sleeping on the basement carpet in a huge storm.

Misc (Trail Work) 20:00 [1]
(injured)

Getting a bit frustrated with my back. LeAnimal thinks it may be the Psoas muscle involved too.

Since I couldn't work or watch the TDF (No power) or go biking or running (injured) I went out to finally clear a path back to our trails after all the lumbering work. They seem to intentionally put all the cut branches onto their tracks to help them grow in or discourage trail formation.

I was able to make a nice little singletrack trail with just a bit of pruning and raking of the cut bits.

Sunday Jul 16, 2006 #

Cycling 1:35:00 [2]
(injured)

My first venture outside since my injury. A fairly easy ride with Bash on rail trail, dirt road and some tough climbs in Glen Haffy. My back felt OK riding, but was trashed for the rest of the day, perhaps only 40% better.

Dr. Bash suggests I take a few full rest days, and I think I will. Easy training's not working..

Saturday Jul 15, 2006 #

Cycling (trainer) 1:00:00 [2]

Ho hum, more trainer riding to the big breakaway. This certainly is the year to break away in the TDF.

Swimming 30:00 [2]
(injured)

Swimming with Bash (and both dogs). Need to get ready for the discipline of Adventure Swimming, whatever that is, and I thought it might be OK for my back.
I'm such a lousy swimmer. I can do it, but sure don't enjoy disciplined laps much, so there wasn't much of that. Front crawl and breaststroke hurt my back a bit, so I had to stick to backstrokes mostly.

The back is 75% better.

Friday Jul 14, 2006 #

Note

Raid The North - Ottawa Valley - 36 hr adventure race

Cycling (trainer) 50:00 [3]
(injured)

Rode with the TDF, and hammered to the finish with Popo.

Strength (Home Gym) 40:00 [1]
(injured)

A rather careful workout #3. I had to omit shoulder press, upright rowing and standing curls as my back didn't like them.

Note
(injured)

The back's 75% better.
Riding the bike trainer with extra lumbar support seems OK, and about all I can do. In the afternoon I was all dressed up and ready to go for an outdoor ride, but Bash persuaded me that I'd be better to recover than push the limits of my back.
I still can't run, and even walking bugs it.

Thursday Jul 13, 2006 #

Cycling (trainer) 35:00 [3]
(injured)

Rode the trainer as the TDF went up the Tourmalet, before work. I still don't trust my back to run or bike to work yet, but it's recovering.

Wednesday Jul 12, 2006 #

Cycling (trainer) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

After a particularly nasty session of accupuncture/electrotherapy from TOD (Who felt badly, but things are very inflamed- After all, he's in *my* chair tomorrow) I rode the trainer a bit, with extra lumbar support. Just as I was getting going up the Haute Categorie climb of the TDF, the power went out.

Tuesday Jul 11, 2006 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

SI Joint's still strained, but it's about 40% better than yesterday. LeAnimal added a glute stretch to my regime, and rx ice.

I did some balance and easy stretching while watching TDF.
Bash's car seat's the most comfy place for me today.

Monday Jul 10, 2006 #

Note
(injured)

Back's worse today. Even Thumbs of Death recommended a couple of rest days, and he never does. My SI joint's out of whack, and I got some accupuncture and work done on it. Pretty much constant pain, but less if I'm sitting. Barely able to walk, can't even carry my work backpack.

No dramatic story about falling off a tree while riding 3M off the ground with no hands, just slept funny last week.

Sunday Jul 9, 2006 #

Note
(injured)

We've been sleeping in the guest room during some rennovations. On Friday night the Bulletdog decided to jam herself in bed on my spine, and I woke up with a stiff back. It's definitely out of whack today. Thumbs of Death, here I come!

Cycling (MTB) 1:45:00 [2]

Bike-O in Dufferin forest with Bash.
We had the O-map, and I've wanted to ride the area and try out my bike map holder. I had a really good time navigating without the pressure of a race. Some of the trails were really loose, but others were excellent. Much doubletrack, similar to AR-type stuff. There's a ton of trail distance there, and lots more potential exploration. It would be good in damp conditions, as there's no way all that sand would be muddy.

Much stop for drive-by-fruiting, as we stuffed our faces with red and black raspberries. We were out for a lot longer than my bike 'puter recorded!

My back didn't bother me much at all on the 'Bent, but when I had to get off to lift over big logs it hurt.
Bash's bike made all sorts of horrible shifting sounds.

Saturday Jul 8, 2006 #

Note

ARC Bruce County - 24 hr- If the RTN doesn't work out.

Running race 57:30 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

5 Peaks trail run Durham Forest.
I started in mid pack, which meant a lot of traffic in the singletrack sections and hills, but eventually things sorted out.
I watched the HRM and tried not to burn matches.
Near the end I caught most of the people I had seen up front for numerous switchbacks, but unfortunately they'd missed the turn and so did I. I figure we made a 1.5 minute error.Trust me to make a nav error on a marked course.
Meridian was hard to catch, and wasn't far behind me at the end.

Finished about 41/190 or so overall, and maybe lost 3 places due to stupidity. 14/41 in my age group.

I always thought I was a fairly quick runner, but only compared to multisport athletes. The overall winner was 80% of my time.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Friday Jul 7, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1

Cycling 1:06:00 [3]

Probably should be a rest day for the run tomorrow, but it was so nice out and I've watched so much cycling, and I need to try out my repaired gears...
Nice ride down to Albion and around the Northeast and Northwest trails. The northwest's becoming quite a dustbowl.

Got the shifiting dialed again. Turns out the shifter pod was full of dust after the 24hr.

Wednesday Jul 5, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 (While watching the TDF)

Cycling (commute+) 1:05:00 [2]

Rode Salty Steven via the pond with The Bulletdog. I had more planned, but you know...
Funny day- my shifting was giving me trouble, then I discovered that I can't change a flat anywere near as fast as the TDF mechs, so I had to take a shortcut to work, only to find that my first patient's car broke so I have a 90 minute opening! Ah well, at least I don't have a broken collarbone like Rodriguez, Dekker and Valverde.

Cycling (Commute) 26:00 [2]

Nice cool ride home at 9, and I didn't even have to turn my lights on.

Tuesday Jul 4, 2006 #

Cycling (trainer) 40:00 [2]

Had to drive to work as we picked up the new Official Treehugger Support Vehicle today, so I rode a bit on the trainer after dinner while watching the TDF.

Monday Jul 3, 2006 #

Running (commute) 30:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Commute in the cooler morning. Longer now that logging is in progress.

Running (commute+) 40:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Hot day so I took the Bulletdog on a 3-swim route home.

Strength (core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core Conditioning with Bash and beasts.

Sunday Jul 2, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2

Paddlng 1:10:00 [2]

Island lake with Bash and G&G.
Strong crosswinds taught us that we're faster with me in the stern in those conditions.

Saturday Jul 1, 2006 #

Cycling 3:00:00 [3]

Mostly Rail Trail to Inglewood, back to Albion Hills and home with Bash. We need some time on doubletrack, rather than technical MTB.
