Running race 38:00 [3]

Chuck Norris Adventure Challenge for Jerks II.
I teamed up with Rene N, who's not much of a runner but heavy on the smarts, so we had the shortest time. I almost lost my pants towing, but we had the most direct route thanks to RN's keen eye. Too bad we had the second-lowest score on the guess-the-clue-by-deciphering-the-poem system.
Zoolander and Diva C won it, followed closely by Slash (Slice and Bash). Hansel and Diva N took the scenic route.
Local girl LeAnimal with Ms Z was the only team behind us, but they didn't even spill the tea they were carrying.

Always a fun time at LeAnimal and Phatty's parties.
Don't ask about Hansel's fireworks technique!

Hiking 10:00:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

A little night hike with Bash, 3Pin, Lo-tox, UltraChar and Petey D. We went basically from Violet Hill 52km down the Bruce Trail home, starting at 9PM. Mostly brisk hiking, we ran a bit at the start and the last 6km. Nice company, interesting night hike if a bit chilly at times, and feet were perfect!

Cycling (trainer) 1:15:00 [4]

Finished up Stage 15 of the 05 TDF. I did some Tiny-type intervals of 30 seconds on/ 30 off, and the rest just got carried away as Oscar P led up all the mountain passes but George Hincape got the win. When Lance, Basso and Ulrich ditched the main Peleton 11 minutes down on the leaders, the crowd went nuts which encouraged me too.

Cycling (trainer) 28:00 [3]

I realized that it's been a year since I got the 05 TDF and I still haven't finished it, so I rode Bash's old road bike on the trainer for a warmup but ended up riding hard- TDF stage 15

Cycling (commute) 26:00 [3]

At least the mud's frozen. I've been riding Bash's old MTB as I'll use that in the SAC, but my neck's been pretty sore even with a short ride. Ankle was fine on the bike though.

Wednesday Dec 27, 2006 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1

Running 1:15:00 [2]

To Palgrave and back with Bash - return via rail trail and blue loop.
I was hoping to give running a rest, as my ankle's getting sore. I should be skiing by now! Oh well, at least the mud's frozen for biking.

Sunday Dec 24, 2006 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Not my usual workout- Gravity Edge machine.

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor 2

Run with Bash around Brantford trails.

Saturday Dec 23, 2006 #

Strength (core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD with Bash. Now for a few days of Carb-loading. And fat loading. I'll be too heavy for Feats of Strength chinup competitions.

Friday Dec 22, 2006 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2

Running long 1:50:00 [3]

2 laps of Palgrave. First Palgrave West with 2-dogs at level 2, and then Palgrave East with Bulletdog, in the cold, rain and mud. After the first hour I felt really pumped, and cranked up the pace. Call it a 3 overall.

Thursday Dec 21, 2006 #

Cycling (Commute +) 32:00 [3]

I was having a nice ride until I broke my chain in the Red Dog 1 singletrack, and found my bike toolbag was at home.
Luckily I had my Cannondale shoes on, so I ran the bike the rest of the way.

Wildlife report- Pileated woodpecker, a grouse and a deer.

Cycling ( commute) 27:00 [2]

Bash was passing by the office and dropped off my tools:)
Shortest day of the year, and it feels like it.

Wednesday Dec 20, 2006 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1

Running hills 20:00 [4]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Hill running with ski poles. I did a fast lap with Bulletdog, and T-dog wasn't pleased.

Running (Commute) 31:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Slower run to work with T-dog. Bulletdog went completely ga-ga when I took out the T-dog, and it took 2 of us to hold her back and let me escape out the door.

Tuesday Dec 19, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Now it's even dark when I run to work in the AM :(

Running 23:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Fast run home. Hard to judge in the dark.

Monday Dec 18, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 27:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Nice run home in the dark with Bulletdog.

Strength (core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD.

Sunday Dec 17, 2006 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 3. Getting close to my max on some exercises again.

Cycling 1:05:00 [2]

First lap with 2dogs in Palgrave West, then second with Bulletdog in Palgrave West singletrack and double, on the old 'bent.

Saturday Dec 16, 2006 #

Strength (misc) 30:00 [2]

Couple of hours of hand-sawing logs and hauling them. Let's call it 30 at 2.

Running (With poles) 45:00 [3]

Run with Bash and Bulletdog. I used ski poles as it's already ski season. It works especially well up hill with an exaggerated stride.

Bulletdog managed to roll in something horrible, and meanwhile the placid T-dog who stayed home managed to leap up, grab and eat almost an entire panetoni- a huge bread-like cake- from on top of the breadbox on the counter. Ahh, life with dogs.

Yoga 35:00 [1]

Power Yoga DVD

Cycling (trainer) 25:00 [2]

Finished watching my DVD course. Ho hum.

Friday Dec 15, 2006 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 + ski spec.

Running 35:00 [1]

A 2-dog jog through the Charlevoix trail.

Cycling (Trainer) 50:00 [2]

I had to watch some rather boring dental CE, so I rode the trainer. No inspiration to sprint to the finish.

Wednesday Dec 13, 2006 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 + XC specific pulldowns.

Running hills 20:00 [4]

Hard hill intervals on the Charlevoix trail on the way to work.
High level 4/low 5.
Heavy pack with 'puter, 2 headlamps, dinner for me and Bulletdog, and jacket and vest I didn'n need to wear.

Running (Commute) 35:00 [3]

The rest of the commute. I think I saw the sun for a second!

Running (Commute) 29:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Susitna

A surprisingly pleasant late-night run home with the Bulletdog. No slush or rain, and a lighter pack.

Tuesday Dec 12, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 26:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Susitna

A lot quicker today on the longer route. Even had time for a second coffee- a Soy Mocha Decaf to replenish carbs and protein of course.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]

A dark and foggy run home. Bring on the cold and snow!

Monday Dec 11, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 1:03:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail Susitna

Run to work with Bulletdog (Should be level 2) and a 2-dog trot home in the dark, drizzle and slush. T-dog jogged along well except for some serious snuffling breaks.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

The dreaded Hard Core DVD with Bash. Why isn't it getting easier? Oh yeah, I only do it once a week- all I can stand.

Sunday Dec 10, 2006 #

Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Running (Thomass Sprint) 20:00 [5]
shoes: Icebugs 2

I normally don't like sprints, but in this case the format was different and I had fun.
3 things I liked-
1- Maps early. More time is helpful to those of us who think slower
2- 30 minute start range- I was able to wait until I could start completely alone. Mass starts mess me up
3- Different loops in the box- I deliberately chose routes that were away from the pack. One time I was in a group so I took a longer route just to be running alone.

Not a fantastic result, but it's *my* result.

Running race (Thomass Chase) 44:00 [5]
ahr:181 max:192 shoes: Icebugs 2

We started according to our sprint times. Again, this spread out the field a bit. Even though the Veg-O of the complicated box was a bit tricky, I liked the butterfly format as it spread the field out a lot. No top 10, but it was a true result for me and I was happy enough (14th I think).

Note

GHO party. I managed to forget my bag full of clean clothes, so had the gay biker look with a black fleece vest and no shirt, until Hammer rescued me an hour later.

I got the Climb Every Mountain award for having almost twice the vertical of Bash and Backwoods at the Allegany Rogaine, but only a few more points. Mmmm, Pinot Grigio!

Saturday Dec 9, 2006 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [2]

Bash and I rode the Rail Trail. I used Bash's old bike, which is now my winter bike.
Stiff headwind on the way there, and the snow sure slows you down.
Bash had foot issues. I wore thick socks in Montrail Susitna GTX running shoes with Powergrips on my pedals, and my feet were a bit chilly too. Funny, 5 minutes of walking dogs after and they warmed up instantly.

Friday Dec 8, 2006 #

XC Skiing (Classic) 35:00 [2]

A lap with Bash and both dogs. Bash gave it a 4/10, but I have to say it was better than Wednesday! T-dog made some good snow angels.

XC Skiing (Classic) 30 [3]

Faster second lap on the Charlevoix trail with the Bulletdog.

Strength (Home gym) 50:00 [2]

Workout 3, but I skipped some of the x-c specific stuff after skiing already today.

Wednesday Dec 6, 2006 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 today.

XC Skiing (Commute +) 1:00:00 [3]

Finally! Only 3cm of wet stuff, but it beats driving. Remind me what wax you use on bare pine needles? Took both dogs out for first lap, then the Bulletdog for the commute.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]

Not enough snow to ski back, so I used my emergency running shoes for a late-night jog home. Ironically it was snowing heavily during my run, but I need to drive tomorrow.

Tuesday Dec 5, 2006 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Snowy commute on the old 'bent.

Monday Dec 4, 2006 #

Running (Commute) 57:00 [2]

Nice brisk run in the light snow, and back in the dark.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD- without poor Bash, who is getting enough core exercise heaving.

Sunday Dec 3, 2006 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1, plus some extra leg isolation, and some XC-specific sets.

Cycling (mtb) 1:40:00 [2]

Riding in the snow with Bash. The new 'bent's in the shop for yearly upgrades, so I took the old bike off the trainer.
In a word- sluggish! Dunno how I raced that so much.
Although I'd rather be skiing, the biking was really nice.

Running 40:00 [3]

After visting my bro in Toronto, I am still in awe as to how much sushi he and my brother in law (non-athletes) could Shamu down. We went to an all-you-can-eat a la carte place for lunch, so I'm not talking about shovelling down a buffet.
I had about half as much as either of them, and was so stuffed I barely made it out for a short run by 4:30.

First lap with both hounds, then a second lap of the steep short hills near our place. Another 5 hours and I'd have burned off lunch.
