Running (Commute) 55:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Commute with Bulletdog. 100% recovered from the Rogaine.

Wednesday Aug 29, 2007 #

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Wed AM group ride- down to Albion, around and back. A good turn out with strong riders-Crash and el Jefe sporting monster downhill bikes, Vmax on his shiny new steed, LeAnimal clearly not tired out from the Rogaine, and newcomer DW.

I 'm still a bit sleep deprived, and seemed to keep losing bits of gear, culminating in my chain breaking as a link plate sheared right through. Took me ages to fix it too.

Fun ride, if a little punctuated with unscheduled issues.

Cycling (Commute) 55:00 [2]

Easy spin to work and back with Bulletdog.

Note

Looks like we got 1528 points, good for 11th overall and 5th in our category.

Orienteering race (Rogaine) 9:00:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Laurentian NA Champs cont'd.
We got behind our ambitious sched. a bit on our first loop. I was a bit dozy and 3Pin had bad feet, so we headed into the hash house at 3:30AM for some foot repair and a double espresso for me. My feet were fine, but I had some chafing issues. Some poor strategy here- we didn't have time or speed left to hit a high value loop NW of the HH, so we had a long slow hike to the next area and not tons of time left. In hindsight we should have dropped some slow lower value stuff earlier in the night. 35 and 56 dropped would have given us time to get over 200 more.

We only picked up another 320 points after 4AM, but were happy enough with that. We got about 1560 points. I think that was more than the top male elite team, but the winners and 2nd were both in our Male Masters category with over 1900.

Bash and LeAnimal crushed their Female category, for Bash's 3rd NorAm win! Poor Bash had even worse feet than 3Pin, and worse chafing than me. A lot of hobbing going on at the awards from almost everyone due to the soggy conditions. I think I got away OK thanks to Barierre silicone and luck.

Orienteering race 14:00:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Laurentian North American Rogaine Champs with 3Pin.
Pouring rain at the start, and pretty much all day, but warm.
We started out strong, with a plan to use our distance running to offset our weaker navigation, so we took longer routes by roads and trails where possible rather than tricky nav. We headed down to the SE corner first. Well over 100pts/hr for the first 6hrs or so, but by 10hrs 3Pin had some foot issues so we didn't run much after that. A lot slower at night, but hit all the CPs OK. One 25 minute error bushwhacking around a wrong lake- d'oh!

Running (Commute) 1:10:00 [1]

Easy run/hike taper commute with bulletdog.

Wednesday Aug 22, 2007 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Nice easy spin on the Hot August Nights course with Bash and LeAnimal.
The dust is down a lot, but the roots are a bit slippery. Some new trail sections!

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Easy jog in with Bulletdog.

Running (Commute) 41:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Even easier jog-hike back with T-dog. To be fair, Pooch Sr. did more jog than hike here. She's still got it, now that it's cooler out.

Running (Commute) 26:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Easy commute.

Running (Commute +) 1:00:00 [4]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

A nice brisk run on a cool day with Bulletdog, around Palgrave with lots of hills. I really got in the zone today after the first half hour. All the mucky bits are bone dry now. Ponds are foul, so Bulletdog swims in the river. Taper time after this.

Sunday Aug 19, 2007 #

Strength (Link) 1:00:00 [2]

K/O's Link workout.

Cycling 1:20:00 [2]

Nice ride with Bash around the singletrack of Palgrave, after a weekend of 3 lunch/ dinner parties.

Friday Aug 17, 2007 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 and some extra ball and balance (not logged).

Cycling (Commute +) 55:00 [3]

To work and back on the Omega. I tried some Palgrave singletrack. Needs more serious mods to handle that trail.

Running 1:06:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Nice run around Palgrave West with Bash and a particularly looney Bulletdog.

Thursday Aug 16, 2007 #

Running (Commute +) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Supposed to be raining, but instead it's a cooker out.
Oddly enough my good knee's a bit sore, but the legs are back.
The commute's still a bit long with the poison ivy detour.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2007 #

Cycling 2:10:00 [3]

Wed Am bike at Albion with Stan the Pianoman, 'Goose, LD the Powerhouse and Bash. It's still dry and sandy out there, but a fun bunch to ride with.

Tuesday Aug 14, 2007 #

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

A pretty gentle run to work and back. Still in recovery mode.

Monday Aug 13, 2007 #

Cycling (Commute) 1:00:00 [1]

A very easy commute with Bulletdog.

Sunday Aug 12, 2007 #

Yoga 40:00 [1]

Power Yoga DVD to work out some kinks from yesterday. I really should train more at speed.

Running race 46:00 [5] 10.0 km (4:36 / km)
ahr:181 max:191 shoes: Brooks CP Green

Dirty Girls race. Most people do this as a solo ultra run of 6, 12 or 24hrs, but I was on a 12hr relay team with Bash, Hingo and Tiny.
This was the opening lap. Only a few of us were on relays, so I was alone in front within 3 minutes, and just ran my HRM. When I came in to hand off to Hingo, he was still zipped into our bug tent. I think they weren't expecting me 5 minutes ahead of the second runner, but he made the switch OK.

Running race 48:00 [5] 10.0 km (4:48 / km)
ahr:176 max:187 shoes: Brooks CP Green

Dirty Girls lap 2.
Took it a bit easier this time, and paced the big hill better. Hot weather and I was a bit thirsty.

Running race 49:00 [4] 10.0 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Third lap. The other relay team was within minutes of us. I drank a lot more after lap 2 and ate a bit, but as a result my stomach wasn't the best for this lap. Still, we made time on the competition's fast guy.

Running race 49:00 [4] 10.0 km (4:54 / km)
ahr:167 max:176 shoes: Brooks CP Green

4th lap. I went before Bash as we were almost out of time and this would let us get in more of the final lap than if she went first.
Stomach was fine, and air was cooler. This lap felt the easiest of all.

Bash did the next lap, and scorched the course to *just* reach the 7.5 mark at the cut-off despite a nosedive, assuring our win (out of 2 teams) with 127.5km.
Char V did 90km and barely missed first female overall.

A good event, and tons of good draw prizes. Good value for the $ too.

Cycling 35:00 [2]

Easy spin on the Omega 'bent in the North part of Albion. More to test out the concept than for any training.

The Witch of Albion trail went fine, some of the twistier bits not so much.
Not too bad on some of the Northeast trails which I rode very gently, but definitely worse than the longer 'bent.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1. I tried some close grip chinups too, which I haven't done for a long time. Only managed 8 or so with no extra weight, and probably couldn't do many more. Geez, I used to do 10-12 of these with 20kg on my ankles and back.

Thursday Aug 9, 2007 #

Running (Commute +) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor - 07

Commute with Bulletdog. Fast on the way there, a bit easier home.

Wednesday Aug 8, 2007 #

Cycling 1:40:00 [3]

Albion Hills with Bash and Rocky. Nice day and a good pace. Rocky's quick!
I managed to lay the 'bent down on a sandy, rutty downhill. (Just North of mighty Lake Albion). Rocky stopped in time, but Bash went Endo and looked like the Abominable Sand Woman.
As always, never enough time to ride all we wanted.

Note

Here are some pics of the new Omega 'bent I'm hoping may work for offroad use.

http://www.elmtreedental.com/AR_SWB_Recumbent_2007...

No night run home for me in deference to Bash's Mountain Lion rules.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2007 #

Running (Commute +) 1:07:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

A longer, hillier run to work and back to avoid poison ivy and Mountain Lions.

Monday Aug 6, 2007 #

Cycling 4:35:00 [3]

Nice rail trail ride to Elora and back with Bash. We had lunch with 3Pin and Fi, and managed to trundle our bloated selves back to Forks of the Credit.

I used the new Omega bike. It managed OK at Forks, but not great on loose round large gravel. Fast on the rail trail, but I'm not sure I'll be using it for AR.

Saturday Aug 4, 2007 #

Paddlng 1:10:00 [2]

Nice paddle with Bash and the 2 beasts up at The Director's cottage.

Swimming 30:00 [2]

Misc swimming around The Director's cottage with the beasts. It's been way too hot for them to run. Water's so warm. Also some asst'd active cottage stuff not logged.

Friday Aug 3, 2007 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 in the cool basement. Too hot and smoggy for anything else.
I did tinker with the 'Bent #2 a bit and test rides are going better.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [1]

I'm in the process of modifying the new 'bent for trail riding. This was my first ride with the big front wheel. Not a great success. Fine on the paved roads in Reddington and straightforward trails, but dicey on the simplest twisty hills. I ended up Princessing out and walking the bike in spots.

Back to the small front wheel for me. Work-in-progress.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [1]

I modified the front fork geometry a bit and the ride home went a little better.
The bike'll jump curbs, but is almost impossible to start up on a steep uphill. Maybe I need to do the rodeo cowboy thing and leap aboard at a run. This particular bronco also managed to dump me off a couple of times at very low speeds, as I can't get a leg down. More like a topple over.
I took it easy as smog is really high, and I don't want to trash my lungs.

Oh well, a project for the weekend. I can see this would be one *fast* road bike though- it's very aero in this position.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Nice ride with Bash around Albion. Just us 2 for the Wed AM ride.
Man, I like riding hard-packed dirt in daylight without a big pack, vs loose gravel at night on a loaded bike!
