XC Skiing (Classic) 25:00 [2]

I was supposed to work out today, but the snow and a very frisky T-dog beckoned. I tried out the new waxless skis, which glide a whole lot better than the old ones. T-dog took me further and faster with a brisk jog than I expected.

Running 46:00 intensity: (26:00 @3) + (20:00 @4)

Chuck Norris Adventure Challenge for Jerks, 2007 edition.
I was paired up with La Femme, and we made a good team with complimentary skills. We actually pulled off the win, against the heavily favoured smart and strong Bash and Hansel team, and the speedy PhatLander boys.

I may have also set a record for plunging through up to my mid-stomach in swampy mud- all the more reason to keep up the pace and not freeze my knee brace or body parts!

XC Skiing (Skate) 24:00 [4] 7.0 km (17.5 kph)

Hardwood Hills. I did a first lap of the Meadowlands trail by myself to see if that funny shortwinded problem I had was due to skiing with Goose vs Bash.

It's so-o much easier to skate on a dead flat trail like this. I kept up a good clip of over 18kph no problem. Trying to not lift my skis so high.

XC Skiing (Skate) 40:00 [2]

Second lap with Bash (30 min) & trip out and back to chalet. Nice easy cruise, yet not all that much slower than the first lap compared to classic.

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:25:00 [3]

Hardwood Olympic trails with Bash. I seemed to get the wax dialed right in and the new skis were just flying today, as I sprinted up all the hills and out-glided just about everyone we passed, in very fast conditions. Felt very good this time- no repeat of Friday's problem.

Saturday Dec 29, 2007 #

Yoga 23:00 [1]

Rodney's Power Yoga Flexibility with Bash. What a gumby-man the lad is!

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2.

Also did some firewood chopping and hauling, but not logged (har!)

Snowshoeing 40:00 [1]

An easy hike with Bash and T-dog.

XC Skiing (skate) 1:45:00 [3]

Duntroon with Bash, Goose, Kynyn and Sophie.
Good skating conditions, and Duntroon's well set out with great trails.

I started out skiing with Goose at an easy pace, but after a couple of hill climbs I was sucking wind, to the point where we sent Goose on ahead and Bash waited up for me periodically. Whazzup?? I felt like an easy cruise was a level 5 all-out for some reason. Probably some combo of no exercise for days, unusual diet last week and no strenuous exercise for months due to injury.

Whatever it was, half way through the first lap I was OK. We took a break, did a second lap and I felt strong again but my knee was getting sore. Maybe I get more stops with Bash than cruising along with the mighty Goose even at his warmup pace?

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:25:00 [3]

A third, longer lap with Bash. I got the wax pretty well, and the skis were just flying. We had a much better ski than I expected with warm, foggy conditions. Funny, I ran up the big S-hill with no probs at all, and was full speed ahead for the whole ski. Maybe I just need a 1-hr warmup? Classic sure feels better than skating for me.

Note- I got some new waxless skis for commuting in dicey conditions. Larry at Duntroon sure knows his skis.

Yoga 22:00 [1]

Bash picked up Rodney Yee's Power Yoga 1. Sure, she wants to see a muscular guy in shorts do contortions strictly for educational purposes.
"Now - Powerful Pose".

Sunday Dec 23, 2007 #

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD with Bash. Snow's too soggy and deep for much outside in the pouring rain.

Saturday Dec 22, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1. Knee a bit sore today- perhaps from yesterday's ski?

Friday Dec 21, 2007 #

XC Skiing 1:20:00 [2]

An easy ski around Albion with Bash. Variable above zero conditions, and the waxless skis were reasonable on surprisingly decent groomed trails. Much better than I'd expected from the forecast, and a lot better than our trails around home right now.

Thursday Dec 20, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 30:00 [3]

Much faster ski today on *real* (Waxable) skis and cooler conditions.

XC Skiing (Commute) 30:00 [3]

Now we're getting there- decent conditions on waxable skis tonight on the way home.

Wednesday Dec 19, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute +) 50:00 [3]

No blasting this AM. I did take T-dog out for a warmup loop to test the snow on the old waxless skis, and they were fine. On my commute conditions changed and the skis were horrible, 20kg bricks under my feet. Still nice scenery though.

Man, I need some better waxless skis for these crazy conditions.

XC Skiing (Commute) 35:00 [3]

Slightly better conditions on the way home. Thankfully Bash had dropped off some liquid fluoro glider, which helped for the first half. There must be better waxless skis around.

I had made a point of skiing next to a massive hiking track, to set some ski-only tracks. By the time I headed home in the dark, some lazy s%$# had made a point of walking right in my ski tracks next to the hiking trail.
Tested out my newly pimped-out Eos headlamp too. It's a lot brighter than before.

Note

Bah- great powder out there and I have to drive to work as I need to make a delegation to council about wind energy this afternoon. Wish I could ski to the town council- darn patients! Looking forward to tonight's moonlight ski.

LeAnimal and Slice came by to wish me luck and deliver a soy latte... Mmmm- thanks!

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Great and much-needed night ski with Bash, Crash, MsLD, VO2max & Mike.
No headlamp needed in the moonlight, and sparkling snow. I did a lot of breaking trail in deep snow, which was a serious workout, but managed to get VO2max to do a good section too, which he referred to as a gorgeous rest day. It was a whole lot easier where I was following him along.

I lead the bunch up the steep Lookout Hill, floundering herringbones in deep powder, to some complaining from the peanut gallery, but the view and desecent were worth it. I even got some telemarks in. It's so-o-o good to have friends you can ski with at night out the door!

Monday Dec 17, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 45:00 [4]

Powder-pounding beats crust-busting any day! I had a great workout breaking trail through 30cm of fresh snow in pristine conditions, and got to see an amazing vertical red ray as the sun rose in front of me.

There were some tracks from snowshoes, but skiing in those are for namby-pambys. I deliberately set ski tracks beside them, and hope the hikers get the message.

Sunday Dec 16, 2007 #

Strength (Link) 50:00 [2]

K/O's link workout + some extra hamstrings and core work.

Snowshoeing 35:00 [1]

Out with T-dog in the storm bushwhacking up hill and dale, then a second outing with Bash.

Yoga 40:00 [1]

Bash and I did Caron's new Yoga for Endurance Athletes II. She sneaked in some of the nastiest leg thingies in there.

Saturday Dec 15, 2007 #

XC Skiing 2:50:00 [2]

A local ski expedition with Bash down my commute to the rail trail, then into Albion, around the red trail and back, while getting our yearly pass.
Conditions were quite icy, and kept eating my wax. It took several tries to get it right, then it would wear off down to the base in a few km. Still, Albion was better than expected as they had some tracks set. So great to get a solid ski right out the door!

Friday Dec 14, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3.

Snowshoeing 20:00 [1]

A short hike on snowshoes with Bulletdog on leash to protect her knee, at the pace T-dog set. Didn't work- she was hopping on 3 legs after even this. :(

XC Skiing 35:00 [3]

A short but fast ski in Palgrave West. Crunchy crusty trails, but actually better than I expected. My knee's a little sore from Yoga.

Thursday Dec 13, 2007 #

Snowshoeing (Commute) 30:00 [2]

An easier jog home on snowshoes- less crust-busting.

Strength (Core) 30:00 [2]

Caron's Core workout live. Fortunately none of the dreaded legs-straight-up-while-lying crunches.

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Caron's yoga class. First time my knee let me do almost all of it.

Wednesday Dec 12, 2007 #

Strength (Home gym) 50:00 [1]

Workout #2. A bit lethargic- been short on sleep this week.

Snowshoeing (Commute) 30:00 [3]

I had to do a shorter run to work on snowshoes than I would have liked on such a great morning as I had an early start to meet a computer tech- who was an hour late after all. #@!$#.

No time for T-dog's slower pace, and Bulletdog's on the injured list.

Snowshoeing 30:00 [3]

A good hard run home crunching through the crust. Knee felt fine- maybe it's almost time to remove the Injured flag.

Tuesday Dec 11, 2007 #

Note

I was planning to snowshoe home from work today with T-dog, but forgot my headlamp. Grrrr!

Monday Dec 10, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 52:00 [3]

Ski to work on the waxless boards, as conditions are changing. The way home was pretty good, even if my skis glide like a grand piano on carpet.

Bulletdog had an appointment, but needs to be sedated to check out if her ACL is torn.

Sunday Dec 9, 2007 #

Orienteering race (Thomass Mt Nemo) 1:02:00 [4]

I tried to not follow tracks and run by myself where possible. Those times were probably my worse splits, but all in all it went OK. I found the map hard to read while jogging along- lots of faint contours.

The knee was a bit sore, but I ran it all. No top gear though.

Snowshoeing 35:00 [1]

Bash and I took the beasties out for a hike, Bulletdog schlepping Bash along (Still on leash due to her sore knee) and T-dog following in my tracks.

Saturday Dec 8, 2007 #

XC Skiing 1:45:00 [3]

A nice loop around Palgrave with Bash. I broke as much trail as possible beside the hiking and snowshoeing tracks. Waxless skis were fine for today, and it was a great ski.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1. A bit lethargic after the ski.

Friday Dec 7, 2007 #

Snowshoeing 40:00 [1]

Took Bulletdog out on leash to rest her leg, and tried to avoid being dragged on my face behind her. T-dog came along too, as we set a snowshoe track beside my ski tracks on my commute route.

Thursday Dec 6, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 30:00 [3]

More crust-pounding on the trails. They're getting a bit more ski-able.
Hard to get the right wax though, as it's a mix of ice and powder. I should have taken the waxless boards.

XC Skiing (Commute) 35:00 [3]

More ski-like on the way home- the tracks are working!

Wednesday Dec 5, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 40:00 [3]

I got out my backcountry crust-buster skis and boots, and pounded my way to work. I'm trying to break one side of the trails for skiing, the other for hiking and snowshoeing. Anybody who wants to help break the snowshoeing lane, please come to Palgrave East and West!

No bulletdog today. Her leg's still sore after her 4-lab play session weeks ago when the doofus overdid it.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 and some extra hamstring work.

Tuesday Dec 4, 2007 #

Snowshoeing (Commute) 40:00 [4]

A hard slog-jog through the crusty snow with Bulletdog, who eventually figured out that it's better to run in my tracks. Trying to break out the crust so we can ski.

Monday Dec 3, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:50:00 [2]

Bash and I took the chair up to the summit and had a fun time skiing out to Alder point and back home. Funny wax conditions, either no grip or stuck like flypaper, alternating. Much better than driving to the airport in freezing rain.

Sunday Dec 2, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:40:00 [3]

I didn't dare skate any more on my knee, so I took the Tarnopol-skis out for a test ride. Bash and I had a nice ski between the preliminary and final sprint races at Sovereign.

VO2max didn't make the finals, but sprinting isn't his favourite, so he was philosophical about it. He still *flew* out there!

Saturday Dec 1, 2007 #

XC Skiing (Classic) 55:00 [3]

A short spin with Bash around Silver Star's lower trails. I got some good hard climbs in as I was feeling stronger but my knee's not 100%. Off to Sovereign next to cheer on V02Max.

XC Skiing (Skate) 50:00 [3]

We met up with Urthbuoy after the race, and had lunch and another short ski around Silver Star. The skating's coming back, (when I'm not poling my ski tip) but the knee won't allow much longer than this.

Also pumped him for info on Geothermal heat vs propane for CO2 reductions, not to mention trading AR stories...
