Strength (Home gym) 1:15:00 [2]

Workout #1 + the rest of the Link workout from yesterday, super-sets.

XC Skiing 5:00 [1]

Can't pass up the first ski of the year, even if it's just a sticky slog around the yard on 2cm of snow. Dogs liked it!

Running (Commute +) 50:00 [3]

Run to work, plus some serious weed-whacker clearing of the trails in prep for ski season. That should burn off a bit of lard!

Running (Commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Easy jog home in the dark.

Tuesday Oct 28, 2008 #

Running hills (Commute+) 1:05:00 [4]

Commute to work and back- I used all the hills as intervals and added some hard sets on the pond hill too.

Monday Oct 27, 2008 #

Strength 40:00 [2]

Foul forecast had me driving to work- no thunderstorms actually showed up.

Hauled & slung another load of wood, and got in about 1/2 a Link workout too.

Orienteering 2:01:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs red

Ugh.

Saturday Oct 25, 2008 #

Cycling (trainer) 50:00 [2]

Easy spin

Misc (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [2]

(3hrs) Hauled a few more 150kg loads of firewood and stacked 'em up. The pile in the driveway is actually looking smaller.
Also some portaging of the boats to put them to bed, reset our solar panels (heavy) and other grunt work.

Hardest thing of all was wrangling a huge roofing ladder within our shed, trying to get it out of the way of the boats. Profanities were uttered.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [3]

OK, I'm giving this one the rare 3 intensity, as I got back to all my previous records on virtually every exercise on the cable gym. Wazzup? Maybe it's all muscle I gained by eating too much and exercising too little last month.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP Green 2

Warm up for Trek or Treat. I seem to be OK since the marathon, but my lower legs are still a little tight. Some easy running, and a couple of hard 1 minute intervals.

Running race 44:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks CP Green 2

Trek or Treat 10K.
I'd warmed up well and my legs were working OK, so I went fast out of the gate. Rydlow caught up and ran with me for a bit before dusting me, and I got passed by Bob Mcgrath after 2k or so, at just over 4min/km. After that I just ran my HRM and concentrated on technique- (Elbows in, arms up, hips forward).

3rd overall by about 40 seconds (Way behind Rydlow though- he's a machine). Not the fastest 10K, but given 2 sizeable and slippery hills on a night run while still "recovering", not bad.

Bash came flying across the line looking good. We both won our 40-something categories.

Another great event- really good haunting on the course, fine prizing, well marked and planned.

Cycling (Commute) 52:00 [2]

Brisk ride with the Bulletdog. Almost need lights in the AM now.

Strength (core) 29:00 [3]

I was hoping Caron would go easy on us today as I'm still a touch sore.
No luck- this was a nasty one. She wants to push us until someone cries "uncle".

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Well, survived this one better.

Wednesday Oct 22, 2008 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3

Misc (Lumberjack) 20:00 [2]

Hauled and slung a couple more 200kg loads

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Slow yet somewhat sore run to work with Bulletdog among the early snow and falling leaves.

It felt harder than it should. I know it'll be good for my legs.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Legs feel better already! Nice run home in the snowy dark.

Tuesday Oct 21, 2008 #

Cycling (trainer) 40:00 [3]

A fairly decent spin. My legs need a spin.

Monday Oct 20, 2008 #

Cycling (trainer) 30:00 [1]

Easy spin to loosen up the legs. Too bad it's all the way down into the basement.

Running race (Toronto Marathon) 3:18:52 [4] 42.2 km (4:43 / km)
ahr:174 shoes: Saucony Road

Bring on the Boston Clam Chowder!

I did this with Goose, and given that we hadn't seriously trained (Decided to do it last week), we planned to aim for a fairly achievable 3:20 time, well within our Boston qualifier of 3:30.. Perfect day for it!

I was watching my HRM and it never got all that high. It didn't seem like a race at all, just a nice day for a run. We were just behind the 3:10 pace bunny at the half way and feeling good, where we met our lovely support- Bash. The long flat out-and-back on the waterfront was actually hardest on the legs as it's so repetitive and we fell back closer to the target pace.

At the 40km mark Goose said that his legs were feeling the hills and I might as well go for it. I cranked up the pace, but Goose was only 6 seconds behind- he had more in the tank than he let on.

This wasn't a push aerobically at all, and I think taking 10 minutes off would have been quite possible. Great to pace with Goose too.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Road

Easy trot with Goose in frosty AM.

Saturday Oct 18, 2008 #

Misc 1:00:00 [0]

Woke up with a headache and not feeling the best- Hiked the hounds, did some stretching, moved one load of wood, but nothing more.

Friday Oct 17, 2008 #

Misc (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [2]

I slung, hauled and stacked several good loads of firewood. Far too nice an afternoon to be working out indoors, so I spent the whole afternoon hauling wood, fixing my canoe, etc.

Running (Commute) 26:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

A fairly easy jog in with The Bulletdog

Cycling (Commute+) 35:00 [3]

I was riding along thinking how great it was to be commuting by bike in the fall leaves after a long hard day, when I heard one of those weird noises that sound like something in the drivetrain failing- metal clanking in the chain. Huh, bike still works perfectly. 10 minutes later I realized &#$@! my keys had fallen out of my pocket! A careful ride back, and sure enough, there they were right where I heard the clank sound. They must have hit the drivetrain on the way down. Whew!

Strength (Core) 22:00 [2]

Hard Core class with Caron. Here we go! Actually not too bad.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

First class of the year- gonna be sore!

Wednesday Oct 15, 2008 #

Misc (Lumberjack) 20:00 [2]

Time to haul a couple more loads before work.

Cycling (Commute) 30:00 [2]

A zip to work with The Bulletdog, plus a little extra.

Running (Commute) 35:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP Green

Easy jog home by headlamp.

Tuesday Oct 14, 2008 #

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP Silver

Got in a short morning run

Misc 1:00:00 [2]

Schlepping furniture and boxes of books up stairs for hours has to count for something.

Monday Oct 13, 2008 #

Running intervals 31:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (16:00 @5)
shoes: Brooks CP Green 2

Short on time, but since I promised to do the Toronto Marathon next weeked with Goose (After deciding not to since I'm at the highest weight and lowest fitness after our anniversary get-away, P&L's wedding, 2 Jewish holidays and Thanksgiving as well as weeks of light-to-no-exercise due to a prolonged cold), I'd better start training.

Bash and I did a 2-3-4-3-2 pyramid.

Now it's time to taper.

Paddlng 30:00 [3]

We were just able to sneak out for a short paddle today.
Again, I used the tippier OW. I made an interesting discovery- a big motor boat slowed down to pass us, sending a pretty big wake up behind us, and as I rode the wave the bow of the OW dove right into the preceding wave, acting like a rudder. I didn't like the way it was tricky to steer while also trying to stay upright in a following sea. Now I understand why the surf ski has such a huge buoyant bow- it's made for following seas.

Again, really got my core and legs engaged while paddling.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Bash and I got out for a paddle on Lake Muskoka in the racing boats (and dry suits). I ended up using the smaller and tippier Open Water boat, which seems just fine on a calm day anyway. I didn't really clock how fast it was, but it doesn't seem *that* much faster than the sea kayak I have now. I have to say that my technique seems the best ever in this boat and the surf ski, as you're really connected to the boat, and any moose-wrestling would result in a swim.

Bash didn't really want to push it on the Open Water with the lake at 12 degrees, even in a paddling dry suit.

We both agree the Surf Ski is a lot easier to maneuver, much easier to hop into, easier to climb back in if you fall out and is a faster boat too, but is more awkward to schlepp as it's almost 22' long. It would also blow around a lot in a crosswind.

I didn't get any pics or GPS readings as the boats are both so wobbly when standing still that I didn't dare drop the paddle.

Strength 1:00:00 [1]

Oh, I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK...

Spent a while hauling 150kg loads of wood to the shed in the back, and splitting big logs with a maul, then stacking. Lots more of this to haul.

Paddlng 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Mike F lent me an Epic surfski and an Open Water racing boat to try for the weekend. Goose and I took them to Albion Hills, and paddled around a bit before Bash arrived by bike. Goose got the surf ski to 14.7kph, but only got the OW up to 14.3 before going for a swim. As he described it, paddling that speed isn't pretty- he's wrestling a walrus, and this time the walrus won.

Bash tried both boats too, but also succumbed to the Albion Hills walrus in the Open Water, and couldn't get back in until she swam it to shore.

I didn't have the guts to go full-out, but did try to get my core engaged. It's sore today, so it worked. At least I didn't fall in. In sympathy, I did jump in and try to get in both boats while swimming. Surf ski was fairly easy to get back in (in dead calm water), but the Open Water took me over 10 tries.

The surf ski would be a better AR boat, but you will be wet for sure.

I noticed I'm not all that much faster than in the Wavemaster sea kayak yet, but a lot wobblier. However, you need decent technique in the wobbly boats or you're swimming.

Running (Commute+) 32:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Nice crisp morning for a good stiff run in with Bulletdog, and we had time for extra singletrack. Part way through my lungs felt it though- still not over my cold.

Hiking (Commute) 50:00 [1]

(1:20)
T-dog's had breathing issues when it's warm all summer, but now it's cool enough for her to commute home. Not quick, but both dogs enjoyed it.

Sunday Oct 5, 2008 #

Paddlng (erg) 15:00 [2]

A little warmup on the trainer.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Since I seem to have missed the Feats of Strength, I thought I'd better get training for the next P&L party.

Saturday Oct 4, 2008 #

Running 1:00:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (15:00 @3)
shoes: Brooks CP Silver

Up at Geneva Park for P&L's wedding.
I ran the Adventure fun Challenge solo. I ran into the Zoolander team a lot, but despite their "help" I got a few right. I did win the "fastest" prize, but true to form not the most accurate.

I think the trick here is not to read on the run but to stop and re-read clues to get into the new Mr. Leanimal's devious head.

Since I was dressed for running and warmed up, I re-ran the course after.

Incidentally, the wedding was fantastic! Bash's log will be replete with details.

Squeaked in an early run down the Don Valley and around Earl Bales.
The cold's almost gone.
