Note

Few hours strolling around Vancouver waiting for my Bro's delayed arrival.
Mostly from gastown to down the seawall to Coal Hbr and back to Robson. We were looking forward to an afternoon in Town before an early dinner, but it's gonna be a late one.

Strength (Home Gym +) 1:15:00 [2]

Workout 3, leg strength and also core.
Knee's still tender, so no biking.

Thursday Jul 29, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [2]

Commute with Bulletdog. They've torn up the last part of my trail commute to put in a golf course, so we had to cross Hwy 50 and take a new route. More leash, less romping for Bulletdog. The early poochswim on the way home may present a problem now- she can't run in summer without a soaking...

Cycling (Commute +) 40:00 [2]

A bit of exploring to find a better route home.

Wednesday Jul 28, 2010 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Out with Coach LD and Gazelle. Just got in a nice ride around all the Albion trails between storms.

Took it easy today as my knee's sore from the weekend and the surgeon cranking on it yesterday.

Tuesday Jul 27, 2010 #

Note

OK, Dr. Scott says it's a classic meniscus tear. No real degeneration, and it's fixable with a fairly short recovery.
The bad news- the waiting list for surgery is 6-8 months.
Meanwhile, same old same old- biking OK, some gentle running, no running races. Got to be careful as it's easier to tear the ACL now, and then I'm pooched.

Monday Jul 26, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 45:00 [2]

Intended to do more, but pretty beat after a day of uncooperative kids, overbooking and understaffing.

The most mature kid I saw all day was Gazelle and Kat's wonderful 2 year old!

Only swatted 7 deerflies on the way home- they seem to be diminishing.

Cycling race 1:15:00 [4]

RockstAR bike section.
Bash and I worked pretty well in the technical bits. I got up front behind PJ and FJ to get away from the traffic that kept bailing in front of me, but saw Bash take a real slider in a puddle, and we ended up leapfrogging a group of riders. Legs were fine but my stomach seemed to stitch up in the humidity- maybe I drank too much before?

One of our better rides though- Bash is fast!

Adventure Racing 6:30:00 [4]

RockstAR- trekkiing and paddling.
We weren't sure about my knee, so planned a route with some bail-outs.
I was actually a bit worried at the start, but got better as we went along.
I was OK on the bushwhacking, and some of the "trail" in the Southeast turned out to be only 70% trail and 30% deep mud-holes so it was not a sustained run. We bailed on a high-value control (#130) due to the slow slogging on trail, but the bail-out got us through particularly nasty bush too.

Knee held out OK, more or less, but I had to be very careful in the bush. My legs aren't used to running either, and were a bit crampy once we got in the boat.
Bash's nav was great as always, but I couldn't tow on foot.

Sadly not too much paddling.

A great, well-organized race. We were 3rd co-ed, and 7th overall. Previously we've been 2nd overall twice, but this was a good field and I'm not in race shape, so a decent result.

Cycling (commute) 40:00 [3]

Resting the knee up so no long Wed AM ride for me, just a basic commute amongst a shimmering cloud of deerflies.

Tuesday Jul 20, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 50:00 [2]

Commute with Bulletdog, and back to visit Skyerocket on the way home.

Cycling (trainer) 45:00 [2]

Watching the Tour

Paddlng (erg) 30:00 [2]

Watching the Tour.

Monday Jul 19, 2010 #

Strength 30:00 [2]

Dumbell portion of yesterday's workout + the hard part of hard core in front of the Tour.

Cycling (Commute) 45:00 [2]

Cool enough to bike with Bulletdog. Surprised Crash and Skyerocket on the way home.

Note- knee's sore from yesterday's 50min run. OK to bike, but a jog would hurt.

Sunday Jul 18, 2010 #

Paddlng 1:05:00 [2]

Out with Bash, Goose and LD on Island Lake.
Good thing we had Kevlar and carbon to match their Royalex and aluminum :)
Off to watch the big stage of the Tour after.

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP4 Yellow

Palgrave West with Bulletdog at a good clip. Lots of oomph up the hills, but the knee held me back. Stretching and lots of icing after.

Strength (Home Gym) 30:00 [2]

Part of workout #1. I'll finish it tomorrow during the Tour.

Saturday Jul 17, 2010 #

Note

Now here's what I call a great surprise for an unsuspecting touring cyclist:

http://entertainment.dk.msn.com/video/skoere_klip/...

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Out with Bash and Coach LD up in Horseshoe.
We found a lot of nice singletrack, from flowy valley climbs to technical rooty ascents, to woo-woo swooping downhills. I also had a very loud blowout flat, and lost my valve from my hydration hose, but a refill from a friendly homeowner had us back on track. Lots more riding we haven't explored yet out there.

Great ride!

Goose spent the time on his rollerskis.

Friday Jul 16, 2010 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 + leg strength- I hid downstairs while Bash and Gstix hatched devious plans for WT '11.

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Nice cruise of Palgrave singletrack and the nicely mown doubletrack.

One section's not mown, and I had an odd mechanical- the massive weeds loosened off my cassette lock ring and it jammed, right in the buggiest possible spot.

Got it fixed, but didn't manage to snap any deerflies out of the air with my teeth a-la Harps.

Wednesday Jul 14, 2010 #

Cycling 1:45:00 [3]

Out around Albion with Bash, then off to work after.
Bash hammered out a solid tempo but it was no match for my ferocious acceleration where the Haute Categorie climb kicked up steeply.
I didn't attack though when the Pink Jersey of Bash was down with a broken spoke, but returned to the peleton to effect repairs.

Those clay sections are so fast and grippy when dry, as opposed to the sticky, slimy goop when wet.

Cycling (Commute) 17:00 [3]

No hounds, so I hammered home before dark.

Tuesday Jul 13, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute +) 1:10:00 [2]

To work and back with Bulletdog, and on the trainer watching TDF.

Paddlng (erg) 10:00 [2]

Little spin on the erg.

Strength 10:00 [1]

Leg strength while watching the Tour

Monday Jul 12, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute +) 50:00 [2]

To work via singletrack and the direct route home. Thunderstorms didn't materialize.

Sunday Jul 11, 2010 #

Running (Barefoot) 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: Vibram FF Trek

Out with Bulletdog in the early part of the day. Palgrave East loop with 3 swims for the hound. Legs felt fairly light and quick, but my knee was getting touchy on the return, despite my attempts at the best Chi running style.

Note- The doc has referred me to a specialist to see if they can fix the meniscus tears.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [3]

Spinning out the knee while watching the Tour approach the Alps.

Paddlng (erg) 30:00 [2]

Watching the lads go up the climb.

Saturday Jul 10, 2010 #

Cycling 2:11:00 intensity: (1:11:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3)

Nice ride with Bash in Dufferin Forest, just cruising around exploring.
Some great flowy singletrack, some soft and hard sandy doubletrack, and some dirt road.
Shady, fairly cool, not too many deerflies and lots of raspberries.

Strength (Home Gym +) 1:10:00 [2]

Neck's better, so I did workout #3 and part of the Hard Core workout too while watching the Tour.

Thursday Jul 8, 2010 #

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 [3]

Another hot day, so I rode in the basement. Sprinted all the commercials.

Wednesday Jul 7, 2010 #

Cycling (trainer) 1:15:00 [3]

Hot and smoggy out, so I watched the Tour

Paddlng (erg) 30:00 [2]

Tuesday Jul 6, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 45:00 [2]

Hot, smoggy commute. I had plans to watch the Tour on the trainer or work out, but it didn't tape right downstairs.

I've also thrown my neck out again. It started by sleeping in the guest room (we're down there where it's cooler) but work trashed it yesterday.
I'd better check my warranty.

Strength 10:00 [1]

Leg strength while watching the Tour upstairs.

Monday Jul 5, 2010 #

Note

Finally got the MRI back.

"Probable radial tear of the medial meniscus and horizontal tear with possible superior surfacing.

3mmx3mm defect on the medial aspect of the lateral patellar facet measuring about 50% of the cartilage depth."

They also saw evidence of my old MCL sprain and fracture.

Guess I'm not just a princess after all. Now I hope they can fix it- I'm not 100% sure how bad it is from the description. So glad they didn't find that the joint's just all worn out and I'm done.

Cycling (Commute +) 1:15:00 [2]
(sick)

Commute in the smog and heat without the hound, then down to the cool basement to watch the Tour on the trainer.

Sunday Jul 4, 2010 #

Paddlng 1:19:00 [3] 10.2 km (7.7 kph)
(sick)

Cold's still nasty and I'm feeling pretty blah, but it's such a good weekend...

Paddling Island Lake with Bash. She had my Wavemaster kayak, and I paddled hers. Good solid paddle- Bash can move!

Followed by Sushi and Starbucks, then spudding in front of the Tour.
(I'd hoped to ride the trainer, but nope.)

Saturday Jul 3, 2010 #

Note

Knee's a bit sore today, but not as bad as I feared.

Hey, I made Pedal magazine's coverage of the 24hr race:
http://www.pedalmag.com/index.php?module=Section&a...

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Knee's not 100% and I still have a cold, but it was too nice not to blast down to Albion and around. So much more flow than the 24hr- I love it when you can just hammer over the roots rather than slide out every time you touch one.

Friday Jul 2, 2010 #

10 AM

Running 4:31:39 [1] 27.82 km (9:46 / km) +320m 9:14 / km
shoes: Brooks CP4 Yellow

Ran with Char on the last part of her record-smashing 894km Bruce Trail run.
I figured if she can keep trucking with all her blisters and cankles, I can suck it up for an easy trot. Knee wasn't too bad at that pace, and Char and I had a good chat while pacing. Bulletdog joined the crowd for the last 8km too, along with Trav, Baloney and a gaggle of others who had helped along the way. She did it by 4:34 PM, taking 23 hours off the record!

See how the knee feels tomorrow.

Thursday Jul 1, 2010 #

Strength (Home Gym +) 1:15:00 [2]

Workout #2 + leg strength and some extra core.

Paddlng 1:00:00 [3]

Lap of Island Lake with Bash. Hard work in the tubby whitewater canoe on a windy day.

How could you not canoe on Canada day?
