Running hills 1:40:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (40:00 @4)
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Took the big guy to the Dingle and Glen Haffy. We did 6 repeats of the run up and down the Dingle valley from various sides, and did all the big hills we could find in Haffy too.

After dragging me around behind the bike yesterday, he finally tired out after about an hour or so. Still kept up OK, but wasn't dashing here and there.

Cold is feeling better, but I have a tight right glute-hammy thing going on.
Oh well, 3 days of work, courses and no training coming up.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Easy commute with Bulletdog. She was on a stop-and-sniff mission on the night run home. I might still be out there if I didn't hurry her along.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Nice frosty ride in at -8c with the big guy in great form, and the longer way home. Nice to have good cold-weather biking gear.

Monday Oct 28, 2013 #

Running 1:15:00 [3]

Took the big guy on the longer route home- the forest is gorgeous, but full of squirrels that drive him crazy and make for a lot of strong yanks in all directions.

Orienteering 1:30:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (1:00:00 @4)
(sick) shoes: Salomon FellCross

Peak 2 peak with Gally.
Took some Advil cold&sinus to help clear me up, and didn't feel too bad, if not running 100%.

Really enjoyed running with Gally- we worked well together as he can read a map at speed in the bush a lot better than I can, but I can scoot ahead to check things out. He has also perfected the high-speed butt-luge down the soggy valleys, and is surprisingly fast in the bush for someone who claims he "doesn't train".

We got a bit tied up looking for 11 which had been stolen, but after wandering a bit decided we were in the right spot. Good to have 2 heads there.

Fell-cross were perfect today.

Note
(sick)

Trying to ditch this bug by training at lower intensity isn't working, and a full rest day yesterday (despite great running weather and the need to get in long hilly runs right now) didn't seem to help, so I'm flying the sick flag and skipping the run again today. Bah.

I should be perfectly healthy just in time to taper for lookout.

Note

Ahh, London. They're starting a series of Cycling Superhighways. Maybe they'll be the Copenhagen of Britain?

Strength 1:00:00 [1]

Foot/kneehab and workout 3 +kbs at a non-aerobic level.

Thursday Oct 24, 2013 #

Strength (Core) 20:00 [2]

Hard Core class. Not too bad except for a couple of nasty ones.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Once every 3 weeks isn't enough to make this all that easy, even though there's overlap with kneehab.

My foot injury didn't like some poses either- it still hurts to flex the toe.

Cycling 52:00 [2]

Broke out the winter biking shoes. Nice crisp day with the big guy surging along powerfully.

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Beautiful run around the Charlevoix trails with Bazingadog. Took it easy as I'm still a bit under the weather.

4 turkeys went right in front of us, but I actually got the crazy dog to sit and wait- thanks to his pinch collar.

Running hills 25:00 [3]

Still not feeling 100% so I just hiked repeats of the North Face of Mt. Tobler at a lower intensity.

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Easy commute with Bulletdog. Crisp cold night run home- smells like snow.

Tuesday Oct 22, 2013 #

Running 52:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Feeling a bit better, so a moderate commute run with the big guy.

Monday Oct 21, 2013 #

Note

Still feeling a bit under the weather. Too bad- this was my last good week for training long runs for a while. Very busy month coming up.

Running 1:05:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Lethargic jog-hike with Bulletdog.

Sunday Oct 20, 2013 #

Note

Ugh- sore and tired today, with a bit of a sore throat. Bah.

Strength 50:00 [1]

Lethargic workout 2 with foot and kneehab. Took everything down a notch or two- just didn't have it today.

8 AM

Running 3:00:53 [3] 25.6 km (7:04 / km) +737m 6:11 / km
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Nice run with Goose from 4th line on Hockley down past the Tai Chi centre and back, with all possible side loops.
Beautiful day out, nice fall colours, a few apples were crunched, but I just didn't have the legs today. I thought I'd be OK once I warmed up, but it never seemed to happen.

Not sure if it's a couple of hard runs the last few days, or something about Flu and Typhoid vaccination, or maybe I'm coming down with something. Goose was sprightly enough.

Friday Oct 18, 2013 #

Running 33:00 [3]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Good solid run in to work with BZdog.

Running 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Nice run home the long way around Palgrave East and through the Charlevoix woods. Maple forests are spectacular in the afternoon sun!

Thursday Oct 17, 2013 #

Running tempo 32:05 [4] 6.6 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Hoped to run to work and then to my environmental meeting, but needed to drive for dog/contractor reasons.

Decided to man-up and run the trail to my meeting afterwards in the dumping rain- hammered it there and arrived early but drenched.

Wednesday Oct 16, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 1 + some kbs and core.

No time to run today as I need to get some vaccines for my Belize trip.
It's going to be hard to get mileage in for Lookout Mtn in December with a very busy fall coming up.

Tuesday Oct 15, 2013 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Commute with the big guy. He was good on the way there, but on the longer route home it was like a chariot race. Turns out his friend Nina was ahead of us, then we came across Crash and her 3 dogs nearer to home.

Orienteering race 1:34:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Nationals long course
I usually prefer long courses as there's more room to recover from errors and I have endurance if not skill.
This time I had a poor start, but there were some long legs where I could just run hard on trail the long way around rather than orienteer straight across, which is good for me.
Not so the route to 4. I tried taking accurate bearings, but in complex terrain it just didn't work and I had a total nav mess (Think I flipped my map- probably lost 20 minutes). Eventually sorted it out, got my head back in it, and ran Ok to the end. Interestingly, Nick the Champ and I left 8 together for the long leg to 9- I ran trail the long way round, he went XC and was leaving just as I arrived so the course was well planned.

Ended up mid-pack again. Oh well, I deserve that with no practice.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Saturday Oct 12, 2013 #

Orienteering race 47:50 [3]
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Nationals Middle.
Very rusty, and this course was in the spaghetti part of the DV, so Mistakes Were Made, with some stopping and head-scratching.

No terrible disasters, but as expected mid-pack despite good fitness. Nice course on a spectacular day, with a cunning design that had folks on different courses running to controls that were close but not the same feature.
Rx glasses worked well, but fogged a touch when I stopped. They'd be useless on a rainy day.

Running 3:20:31 [3] 26.19 km (7:39 / km) +992m 6:26 / km

Great day for a reverse Hockley loop with Shedman and Clyde the intrepid pooch.
We did several extra side trails, with a few stops when Shedman had to take work calls. Hard day in the office for him, working from the Bruce trail.

Good warmup for orienteering tomorrow- I haven't looked at a compass since Storm the Trent.

Wednesday Oct 9, 2013 #

Running 29:00 [2]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Second lap was a cool-down commute with Bulletdog. Shorts and T-shirt in October- perfect sunny day with great fall colours!
9 AM

Running hills 1:49:00 [3] 16.18 km (6:44 / km) +517m 5:49 / km
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Enough of the recovery and the cold- time to resume Wednesday AM hills. Only 9 weeks to Lookout Mountain Ultra.

Bazingadog and I ran as many hilly loops as we could find in the Charlevoix area, and then off to Salty Steven. 3 swims for the lad. He was Loco-Motive with all the deer, cyclists, horses and chipmunks, and not at all tired from yesterday.

Tuesday Oct 8, 2013 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

To work with Bazingadog and back. On the way home he got scent of some cyclists and hauled me along at 25-30 kph for a good stretch. After we caught them he took off again after a second group. He's like a locomotive on these cool days- one that coasts up hills and only pulls when we go at a decent clip.

Monday Oct 7, 2013 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Commute with the big guy in a cool rainy day, then some hill intervals with Bulletdog- repeats of Mt Tobler and F&M Peak from sea level.

Sunday Oct 6, 2013 #

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Bash's foot precluded our usual trail run, so we hiked the Track and Tower trail in the dumping rain.
Colours were spectacular, there was an amazing misty lookout, and we had a guidebook that showed us old pics of the busiest railway in Canada running through this area without trees, a century ago. Almost no sign of it now.

Met a large Chinese group who were pretty wet in down vests, city shoes and umbrellas.

Paddlng 1:30:00 [2]

Paddle from Arowhon past the rock where we got married (campsite was occupied) down to search for archeological clues to the town of Joe Lake that existed 80 years ago, according to a book Bash is reading. Not much left, but we found a few bits of rusty metal.

As we got into the lodge canoe to head back, I found a half-meter crack in the bottom of the hull that was flexing and leaking slightly. It was only held together by the gelcoat and outer single layer of glass, so we headed straight back, close to shore before it turned into the Titanic.
9 AM

Cycling 1:44:16 [2] 32.25 km (18.6 kph) +164m

Nice ride with Bash in Algonquin Park from Lake of 2 rivers up along the old railway (flat), with some exploring of side roads that were spectacular and hilly.

We were surprised by a big bull moose who emerged out of the swamp right beside us and crossed maybe 10M in front of us. He gave us an "eh" look and headed off down the trail and into the bush. I'll try to post a pic, but my old digital camera is very slow on the zoom so it's tiny.

Bull moose in rut can be extremely dangerous, but for some reason I thought rut season was late October-November. Bash looked it up, and it's actually rut season now. Oy.

Strength (Core) 20:00 [3]
(sick)

Hard Core class with Caron.
Despite doing strength with some core for quite a while, I'll be sore tomorrow.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Looks like my balance is pretty good from all the kneehab, but my hamstring flexibility is terrible. Avoided the Pigeon like the plague.

Wednesday Oct 2, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 3 + some KBs. Still only a feeble 8 strict pullups from dead-hang.

Running 50:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Still feeling the cold, but it's a perfect summer day out. First lap with both dogs, where BZdog hauled so hard I got his spiky pinch collar for the second half. Took him to work via the Charlevoix hills and Wheelie's pond.

No cross-dressers in skimpy outfits today.

Running 25:00 [2]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Easy night run home.

Tuesday Oct 1, 2013 #

Running 1:00:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Easy jog-hike with Bulletdog respecting my cold and ankle (which seems improved). The fence barrier is open, but my route is all cut up with heavy construction anyway.

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Commute with the big guy.
The gate that was recently unboarded by the conservation area was now blockaded by a big pile of logs and branches, which took me about 10 minutes to clear. After that, my route is all cut up with construction work on the next phase of houses. Sigh.

Passing under Hwy 50, I surprised a tall cross-dresser in a tight skirt, high heels and a skimpy top adjusting his(or is it her) outfit under the bridge. Now that's not something you see every day on a trail in Palgrave.

Ride home was much less eventful- I just needed to get around the graded earth.
