Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Commute with Bazingadog.
Met the lady with 2 unfriendly dogs who was friendly this time. She warned me of hunting setups in the Wheelie woods. We rarely venture there this time of year, and when we do man and beast wear high-vis.

Strength (Core) 20:00 [3]

Hard Core class with Caron. My healed ribs hurt a bit on one nasty exercise. I missed a lot of core work due to the ribs in summer.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

We brought Mocha to class to supervise. She's not well enough to be left alone right now, but enjoyed the trip and socializing.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 3, foot/kneehab and some core.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Ride in with the big guy.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Easy commute with the big guy. Ran into K/O, 2 squirrels and 3 deer so the pooch was a bit of a handful at times. He's been very sedate for the most part as Mocha's not feeling so well.

Cycling 26:00 [2]

Commute with the big guy.

Running 2:05:10 intensity: (1:52:10 @3) + (13:00 @4) 18.0 km (6:57 / km) +496m 6:07 / km

Peak 2 Peak
Nice time running with first-timer BGY. We were with the 2 leaders heading to the first control, but found the pace and traffic too confusing to follow the map so we cut across to a different trail where we could work on nav by ourselves. BGY did great, and we didn't just hammer along with me on the map but took our time to reorient and both be in contact. No big mistakes, despite navigating more or less by ourselves. Near the end we were running out of time and had to choose btw 75 point Vertigo and an on-time return or the harder 150pt Bullseye and a hammerfest/ late return. Of course BGY insisted we do the tough one, and we hauled back about 5 min overtime.
BGY loved the big climbs, steep descents and river crossings.
Kudos to the Griz and Bob on cleaning the course.

Johhny Blonde truck looked good but no veg options, but this close to Domestique it was a no-brainer!

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 2, as well as hauling a load of logs from the bush and splitting it, plus hauling and hanging all the boats and raising the solar panels' angle for winter etc... Dogs were happy to help in the fenced yard- they can come and go from the gym as they please.

Friday Oct 24, 2014 #

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Out for a couple of hours giving BGY an intro to adventure running navigation in Albion. Bash had set up a beginner course for school kids with on-trail nav, so we did it off-trail, and hit numerous more difficult features in between.
BGY wasn't too keen on burr-filled dark green areas, but once we got in the open woods and river crossings he really got into it- he's a natural!

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Another great bike commute, but this time it was barely light both ways.
Return trip included a 1km Venison-inspired rocket ride as the same deer seemed to cross our path 5x.

Wednesday Oct 22, 2014 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Home Gym workout 1, knee/foothab, KBs (Only 2-hand swings- L. wrist still sore). Some core and lumberjack work at the end too.

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Commute of the Gods- biking under bluebird sky on a cool day in full jaw-dropping fall colours with my big buddy galloping along beside me is the best commute ever.

Tuesday Oct 21, 2014 #

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Easy commute with the big guy. Right ham/glute thing is sore and knees both twingeing a bit, but not too bad. Fall colours still going strong- that helps!

Hiking 1:00:00 [0]

Easy hike home with Mocha the wonderdog. She trotted along like a champ in the cool drizzly evening.

Cycling race (MTBO) 1:28:19 [3] 17.11 km (11.6 kph) +333m

Woke up still feeling a bit nauseated, and *both* knees were so sore I could barely walk down the stairs. However, after all the work Bash put into the MTBO I planned to suck it up, buttercup.

Felt feeble off the start, with no climbing power. Knees got worse, and the nausea was coming back big time. I tried walking the bike up one hill but that was awful.

I seemed to be navigating OK, and local knowledge helped, but was having a hard time seeing the singletrack with a cloudy map bag and my contacts in. I leapfrogged DD11, FB, KS and LD often. Still had lots of fun in perfect fall colours.

The last hill just about killed me, and a bad shift which jammed my chain made it worse, but I made it back OK, despite feeling like I did at UTMB ie death warmed over.

Despite my self-inflicted issues, it was a great event. Good course, excellent weather, well organized. I'd love to do it some time when I am human again.

Great lunch at Caruso's after too, which I was able to enjoy with gusto after a few hours recovery.

Running race 5:02:06 intensity: (23:00 @2) + (1:53:43 @3) + (2:43:42 @4) + (1:41 @5) 50.86 km (5:56 / km) +388m 5:43 / km
ahr:165 max:185

Vulturebait 50K. The plan was to run a very easy first lap, take only Tailwind drink and hammer gels, and see if I can avoid ultra-nausea.

Trails were gorgeous in full fall colours, almost all flat, but the few muddy downhills had nervous runners' knees quaking. Lots of slippery mud in some areas.
I watched the HR and jogged the first half super-easy in 2:22, feeling fine. BGY was taking pics, and was impressed by how I held back.
I finished my first litre of Tailwind with 3.5 scoops, and one hammer gel with about 1/3l water.
Second half started OK, but at the 40K mark my stomach started feeling dicey and pace dropped. Every sip of Tailwind was followed by burps and nausea, but I finished the second L of tailwind. By 45 K I had one dry heave, and pretty much couldn't take anything else in. I turned down offered coke and even beer, and bet if I had eaten any food at all it would come right back up.
I had maybe 1/2L water on this lap, really couldn't swallow any more.

Gutted it out to the finish with legs like cement, and was too nauseated to eat or drink for an hour or so after, but eventually nibbled a bit of soup and a tiny bit of mac-and-cheese noodles.

RAPS came in looking good on his first 50 paced by a beaming BGY who had scored a full beer on the course.

STORM had a good run, and was 6th overall. Wokitoki had a great run and was 6 minutes faster, 4th overall.
I was pretty surprised to win the geezer category.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Workout 3 and foot/kneehab. Still skipping exercises due to the left wrist issue.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Uneventful commute with the big guy. Kept him short-roped for the dark run home.

Tuesday Oct 14, 2014 #

Note

Found an f-ing deer tick on my rib. 3mm diameter, probably from Sunday.
Dime-sized red blotch. Took 200mg doxycycline prophylactically.
5 PM

Cycling (Commute) 52:00 [2]

Easy ride on a strangely warm and foggy day.

Monday Oct 13, 2014 #

Running 30:00 [3]

Ran the big guy around the Arnprior Old Growth- amazing! He was getting pretty bored watching the sprints and relay.

Orienteering race 40:55 [3] 4.72 km (8:41 / km) +53m 8:13 / km
shoes: Salomon FellCross

NAOC long.- GPS only recorded part.
More my style today- longer legs with fast runnable trail and less technical nav.
I still finished in the bottom third, made some errors but at least knew where I was all the time so a lot less frustrating than yesterday.
I was less than double Champion Hammer's time, so proportionally better I guess.

Orienteering race 38:00 [3] 5.0 km (7:36 / km)

Finish time was 1:19. Oh well...

Saturday Oct 11, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Running BZDog a bit and warming up before the middle race.
11 AM

Orienteering race 1:24:44 [2] 6.6 km (12:50 / km) +82m 12:05 / km

NAOC middle distance. Ugh. Wasn't dead last at least.

Wednesday Oct 8, 2014 #

Strength 45:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 2 on home gym and some core.

Tuesday Oct 7, 2014 #

Cycling 55:00 [3]

Commute.

Monday Oct 6, 2014 #

Running 57:00 [2]

Nice fall commute. Ran into 6 turkeys where BZDog stood like a statue until they made a break for it. Luckily I had him locked down and all was fine.

Sunday Oct 5, 2014 #

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Nice little ride in Palgrave East with the big beast. Lots of deer out.
Looks like they will be closing the trail to install another massive bridge over the creek. Sigh.

Running 3:00:24 intensity: (10 @0) + (1:02 @1) + (34:26 @2) + (2:12:42 @3) + (12:04 @4) 28.39 km (6:21 / km) +619m 5:44 / km
ahr:155 max:172

Palgrave to Albion, around and back. Distance and speed probably underestimated due to singletrack sections.

Great run on a spectacular day. Gorgeous colours, flurries of red and orange leaves, just jaw-dropping at times.

I tried to keep to the shorter ultra pace and watched the HR. Also tested race hydration/nutrition suggestions from MT.
Right glute and hamstring were tight, and legs were sluggish, and I was definitely done by the end. Probably not recovered from last weekend. VB will be a slow one...

Drank 1.5L full strength Tailwind (2 packs) , 0.4L water, 2 S-caps and 2 hammer gels. Stomach was OK but I felt on the verge of sloshing in my stomach and causing stitches, so couldn't drink a lot more. Drank 1.5L afterwards.

Thursday Oct 2, 2014 #

Note

Got into Vulturebait from the waiting list. Just in time to start the taper :)
I hear it's fairly flat. Is it a Hoka-type race or more like a Fell-cross?

Cycling 48:00 [3]

Good singletrack scoot to work (no pooch today) and a fast scoot home to meet a contractor who no-showed.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Olympus

Had to go to School (Helping the Humbeview Shop class with environmentally efficient home construction) so I left the car at work and ran home to fetch BZdog and back.

Strength 30:00 [2]

Some kneehab, a bit of core work (Still feel the ribs just a touch) and a bit of strength.
