XC Skiing 2:04:00 [2]

Great ski on the Humber from the Goosenest to Duffy's Lane with LD and Bash. We stayed on the river virtually the whole way, skirting around open bits. Saw lots of interesting tracks.

Good pics on Bash's log.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Finally just enough fresh pow to ski. -28 windchill, blowing snow, now that's more like it! Hard crust underneath so too treacherous for skijoring, but a gorgeous day out in the Charlevoix woods.

Totally worth the coughing after. Guess my lungs aren't fixed yet.

Running 1:05:00 [3]

Where's the snow? I was hoping to ski to work.
Another run in on crusty trails. Bazingadog could have been leashed with a piece of string as he trotted along.
On the way home in a couple cm of fresh snow, he was a lot more enthusiastic and enegetic.

Snowshoeing 1:13:00 [2]

Excellent night bushwhack with Bash. More fun than yoga- and my knee has been a touch dicey but fine for this. No coyote howls right in my ear this time.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foothab, Kneehab, full Link workout.
Feeling the knee a bit after a lot of leg work.

Running 54:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Gorgeous bluebird day out- did some extra bushwhacking and singletrack.

We just need a couple of cm more to ski!

Running 28:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Night run home solo. Beautiful calm clear moonlit night. I heard coyotes howling in the distance, then some went off quite nearby. Never heard them that close before. I turned my light to high power but didn't see any eyes.
I have to confess I did break off and carry a baseball-bat sized branch for the rest of the run.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Solid run in with Bazingadog, and some quick intervals on the way home.
Only need the headlamp for part of the return now!

Note

Got some more pics from the Globe and Mail photographer.

Running 1:15:00 [3]

Nice run in with the big guy at. -18c
Did some extras on the way home.

Snowshoeing 2:33:48 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (2:03:48 @3) + (15:00 @4) 15.84 km (9:43 / km) +397m 8:38 / km

Snowshoe out with Bash to meet the C3 crowd. From there, I took Bechtel and BYG out on a backcountry tour of Palgrave East with their 2 well behaved dogs Quinn and Bernie.
Bechtel was on shoes with Katoola spikes, so we gave him a solid workout off-trail, but he really schooled me on the Singletrack later. Guess that's what happens when you're an Xterra champ and multiple Canadian Triathlete of the Year.

After that I got a ride home with BYG and Quinn, then harnessed up the big guy for some hardcore hills and Quest For Deer bushwhacking in the deep dark areas south of Palgrave West.

Finished up by hauling a load of logs in.

Fantastic time out on a sparking winter day even if it's not skiable.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 2 + foot/knee/heelhab with extra leg strength stuff from KO via Bash.
10 AM

Running 1:30:09 [3] 12.84 km (7:01 / km) +424m 6:02 / km
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Run in Glenn Haffy with BGY and Quinn the well-behaved ultradog. We ran into K/O and ran with her for a bit. Huge traffic of Asian hiking group (they are hardcore- always out there). We took little-used side trails back.
Great lunch after!

I felt yesterday's ski a bit, and the left hamstring/glute and right heel made themselves known, but the bronchitis is fading.

XC Skiing 1:40:00 [3]

Wahoo, finally well enough to ski at Highlands.
Did the entire outer loop except for part of the lower Woolner section that was all washed out, and did a second orange/blue. Not super fast, but I still have enough fitness to trot up the hills.

Thursday Jan 22, 2015 #

Strength (Core) 22:00 [2]

Progressive core. No nasty groin-splitting leg lifts, but lots and lots of reps so a good workout.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Progressive yoga- went through lots of poses.

Wednesday Jan 21, 2015 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab plus workout #1. Bash borrowed my dumbbells!

Running 1:23:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Hard crust, nice and flat where the fatties ironed it out, lumpy elsewhere.
BZdog on leash, not hauling harness.

Nice night run home too.

Tuesday Jan 20, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Trails were pretty lumpy and way too crusty for Skijoring, but not terrible on skis. I think a fat bike would be the ideal way to go right now.
No complaints, great to be able to ski without hacking up a lung.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Coach LD suggested I meet her at Mono for a night ski, so I bailed on my planned run and we had an amazing ski at an easy pace. Lungs held out as long as I didn't push it, but Coach kept an eye on me.

So good to be out again. So much work ahead to get ready for Gatineau!

Sunday Jan 18, 2015 #

Snowshoeing 40:00 [3]

Snowshoe instruction at Albion. I ran with the quicker group.

Some newbie (Sean Bechtel- Canadian Triathlon legend) and I did some solid bushwhack runs up and down steep hills.
I was thrilled to be able to finally run a bit, but was gassed on the steep ups.

Snowshoeing 20:00 [2]

Hauled a decent sized load of logs in from the bush. BZdog had his harness on but was no help.

Thursday Jan 15, 2015 #

Snowshoeing 45:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Brisk snowshoe hike to work w/poles. BZdog was no help- more likely to stop and sniff than to assist with propulsion. All good if we're out for a stroll, but I had to keep him moving to get to work on time.

Less hacking today- meds are working.

Snowshoeing 50:00 [1]

Snowshoe back. Bazingadog can take his time on the return trip, but instead seems to help out more at night- more interesting smells to inspire him to surge along.

Still hacking, but a bit less nasty stuff coming up.

Wednesday Jan 14, 2015 #

Strength 45:00 [1]
(sick)

Gentle foot/kneehab and some very light strength just for mobility.
It was so beautiful out that I hauled a half load of wood, but even that had me hacking and coughing up stuff.

Slept better, but still no energy and can't exert myself without coughing fits.

Note

Saw MD- Nasty bronchitis. Now on antibiotics and 2 puffers.

Tuesday Jan 13, 2015 #

Note
(sick)

Ugh, worse today after a lousy night's sleep. More coughing and burning feeling in the lungs: #1 man-cold. #%^ driving to work.

Monday Jan 12, 2015 #

Snowshoeing 1:35:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Easy plod to work on snowshoes. Even walking back kicked the heck out of me, and I couldn't join the ladies on a night ski.

Lungs are burning when I cough or breathe deeply, and I'm coughing up nasty stuff.

Sunday Jan 11, 2015 #

Snowshoeing 20:00 [1]
(sick)

Foot/kneehab in Brantford, then an easy snowshoe hike with Bash and BZDog was all I was up for when we returned.

Friday Jan 9, 2015 #

Note
(sick)

Argh. Perfect ski conditions, but too sick to ski to work. #$%&!.
Yet another barrier to getting back in shape.

Thursday Jan 8, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Another decent ski commute with Bazingadog. Marginal conditions but I still love it.

Sadly, I think I'm getting sick just as some decent snow is forecast.

Wednesday Jan 7, 2015 #

XC Skiing 1:02:00 [3]

Just enough snow to ski to work on the crustbuster skis. I had to de-ski at a couple of steep hills in Palgrave East where there were just too many icy ruts, but still great to be out at -17.

XC Skiing 30:00 [3]

Beautiful moonlight ski home in cold but calm air.

Tuesday Jan 6, 2015 #

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Crunchy run in with poles and pooch.

Monday Jan 5, 2015 #

Note

Pic from the Globe- caught me in mid-leap.

Strength 30:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab and some cable press, pullups, shoulder cable press and rows.

Sunday Jan 4, 2015 #

Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Short run with Bash and Bazingadog. Why does he go crazy running in groups- he's a completely different pooch when it's just us 2, and has been trotting nicely around Brantford sidewalks for weeks. Today it took him about 1-2km to settle.

2015 new year injury report-
Left heel still sore. I'm thinking the minimalist shoes have reduced stress on my knee but are worse on my heel. I still feel the right knee on longer runs, and my left wrist is still not able to take a lot of weight. Sigh.

Strength 20:00 [2]

Snuck in some foothab, heelhab, kneehab, mountain climbers, push-ups but didn't want to push the wrist.

Friday Jan 2, 2015 #

Running 30:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Sense Ultra SG

Easy trot around Brantford with the big guy. Heel sore from yesterday.

Running intervals 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Sense Ultra SG

New Years SMT run with Bazingadog and the fast crew. Tarno's Coco ran well with him, but as usual he's a bit of a challenge on leash as he's a "Got to be first" dog, which means that a I have to stay at the front or he'll drag me there anyway. Hard work when I haven't been training and we had a strong teenager and some other fast runners to stay ahead of. Maybe next time I'll try his skijoring harness rather than a regular collar.

I chickened out of K2 and Tiffany Falls, fearing faceplants if I didn't lead the way, and we all survived intact. I could see Hammer considering trading me for Brody at the SSR- talk about towing power!

Really nice to get out, and a wonderful time after at the Hottage- big thanks to Trav and Baloney.
