Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

From ABC with Dee, Amber and Nicole. Ankle well taped.
2 PM

Cycling 59:17 [3] 11.69 km (11.8 kph) +255m

Riding Northwest Passage from ABC.
Turns out the West side of NWP was a muck-fest. Lots of AR-worthy slogging, but we did move some downed trees. Note to self- Not worth doing unless conditions are dryyy. Main Kolapore side was much better. New rock tires were good!

Monday Oct 26, 2020 #

Running 58:00 [2]

Easy jog/hike commute. Ankle ok in brace, but a bit sore the next morning.

Sunday Oct 25, 2020 #

Running 40:00 [2]

Easy run with the dogs and an ankle brace. Went ok but a bit sore after.

Cycling 1:25:00 [3]

Browner and Storm came over to drop off their dogs and go riding with us. We had a nice ankle-friendly route planned, mostly doubletrack. I had seen a Strava map that showed a load of singletrack in the NW of Palgrave. I’d checked that area out during the shutdown, and there was some old overgrown singletrack there. I had actually asked Andre the Trail Maintenance Volunteer if we could revive it, but he said the bike club didn’t want the liability.

We managed to find a discreet entrance where I had suspected, but to my surprise rather than a vague old track there’s a solid, technical singletrack trail there, with a mix of newly built sections, big drop-offs, and very recently cleaned-up old trail. We rode it for over 2km. Unfortunately Browner hit an off-angle wet log and faceplanted hard. Nothing broken, but we had to pull the plug and hike-a-bike to the doubletrack then home. Decaf, dogs on lap by a bonfire helped Browner recover, and IPA for us.
Not the most ankle-friendly riding, but no twists or crashes on it for me.

Turns out it’s brand new rogue singletrack.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Easy ride with the dogs before the weather got too wild.

Note- got Thumbs-of-death to work on my ankle, and he lent me an air brace.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Rehab and workout 1

Thursday Oct 22, 2020 #

Running 1:00:00 [1]

Test-drove my ankle in hiking boots. Not bad, but no running yet and too soggy to ride. Also cleared the leaves off the Covid Crusher trail.

Wednesday Oct 21, 2020 #

Strength 50:00 [1]

Kneehab and easy workout 3. Cautious foothab seems ok, but no wobble board yet.

Tuesday Oct 20, 2020 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]
(injured)

I put a platform pedal on the right and rode light gears to work. Felt OK on the ride.

Hiking 1:55:00 [1]
(injured)

Planned to bike, but too soggy in the morning so we met Dee for a hike from Castle Glen through Scenic Caves.
Spectacular woods, but I stepped on something under the leaves while just walking, my foot rolled and heard a loud crack from my ankle.
Hurt so much it took me quite a while for the nausea to die down. We had to baiI and I managed to walk back to the car via easier route.

No biking on such a great day. Nice and swollen now. All the cool kids are spraining ankles.

Hiking 55:00 [1]
(injured)

Bash wanted to see if we could meet the Boultbees as their 80k run passed near us. I took trekking poles and walked gingerly, but it took a while for my ankle to warm up and stop hurting. We missed the ladies, but at least had a great hike on the Bruce West of ABC2.
There may be a connector between Bruce and Kolapore Church trails about 500m from the road, but it was too late and I was too sore to explore.

Wednesday Oct 14, 2020 #

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Out with the hounds before work.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Quick workout 2, some rehab and hand-sawing fallen trees.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Scoot to work via single and doubletrack, and night ride home.
Perfect fall day.

Monday Oct 12, 2020 #

8 AM

Running 1:59:27 [3] 13.71 km (8:43 / km) +409m 7:35 / km

Knee was feeling better after some more easy days, so I managed to convince Tarno and AD to keep the pace easy in Pretty River. No bombing the downhills, and even walked some uphills.

Sunday Oct 11, 2020 #

Hiking (Trail work) 1:30:00 [1]

Scouting our property lines, and a Western route to the Bruce which won’t work on skis. Back to our original trail with some fine tuning of the route, then some clearing.
2 PM

Hiking 1:55:00 [1] 7.21 km (15:58 / km) +93m 15:00 / km

Hike with Goose, LD, Bash and the hounds. We bushwhacked to the Bruce, over the cliffs to the UTOC cabin, and back by Kolapore highway. Stunning!

Saturday Oct 10, 2020 #

Paddlng 30:00 [2]

Abortive attempt to take both dogs paddling with Goose and Coach LD.

Unfortunately the Beast of the Beaver (Bazingadog) jumped overboard into very smelly muck, and persistently attempted to abandon ship until we sent the Doughty boat on ahead, and turned back to clean up both Bash and the beast. I had to paddle solo while Bash hung onto the filthy hound.

Too bad- he’s scotched any chance of him coming on a canoe camping trip in the next year at least.

Friday Oct 9, 2020 #

5 PM

Cycling 53:49 [3] 10.82 km (12.1 kph) +231m
(injured)

Late afternoon scoot with Bash from ABC2 to the Kolapore trails.
Still haven’t mounted my rock tires on the BBW yet.

Knee still sore so no running with Tarno tomorrow.

Thursday Oct 8, 2020 #

Cycling 45:00 [2]

Light, knee-friendly spin to work. Saw deer both coming and going.

Wednesday Oct 7, 2020 #

Running 20:00 [2]
shoes: Topo Terraventure

Gusty, so just a short jaunt in open areas with the dogs.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Lumberjack, a bit of rehab and only time for the first half of workout 1.

Note- Medial of left knee fairly sore. It's been odd since we hiked Killarney in August, and I've been taking it pretty easy on it but it's not recovered.

Tuesday Oct 6, 2020 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Monday Oct 5, 2020 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Commute plus Covid crusher.

Sunday Oct 4, 2020 #

Paddlng 1:30:00 [2]

Easy paddle out in calm conditions. AD is the best camping dog ever, and had fun with Steve’s slightly naughtier Wheaton Terrier Frank.

Friday Oct 2, 2020 #

Paddlng 1:30:00 [3]

Paddle in to Rain lake. Easy trip with 2 retired colleagues, one of whom thought he’d never do this again, until he got a transplant.
Separate cars, tents, canoes, meals, as they’re both high risk.

I soloed with AD and a lot of the gear, and it was decent work into a head wind.

Thursday Oct 1, 2020 #

Cycling 45:00 [3]

Quick commute back on the Kodiak.
