PEI trip day 3
Horrible forecast so we bugged out early via the inside passage.

Sounds like we’d be windbound for days if we stayed.

Enjoyed paddling the channels and passages, and didn’t mind a rough section.

Beaverstone bay was nice, but the long straight Collins Inlet passage gets a bit monotonous even with spectacular cliffs etc.

Some fun bouncy swells near the river mouth at the end.

We met a group of experienced kayakers who ventured out past protection yesterday, and 4 of 5 capsized and got washed into shoals.

We camped at George Lake and got pounded with thunderstorms that night.

The wind was forecast to blast in the afternoon so we tootled along the coast via protected amazing rocky channels in the islands and camped early- spectacular site in Bear bay.

A bit hairy getting around one exposed point, so we portaged behind Big Rock.

We only shared the huge expanse of Bear bay with one other group. Must come back with a better weather window- so much to explore!

2 PM

Swimming 25:00 [3]

Brought the tri suit and had quite a nice swim. It was warm enough I didn’t really need the suit but nice to bob along on the surface.

Phillip Edward Island trip.

Beautiful calm conditions. Islands were gorgeous.

Arrived late in the busy Solomon Island area, and ended up with a site near a ruined houseboat/fishing camp- lots of trash, but nice sunset and stars.

We wrapped up the CP, but the last team was hours past the latest estimate (overly generous cut-off), and we had poor communications with HQ via cumbersome Yellowbrick.
We turned the last team around and told them we'd catch them up, but it was almost an hour before HQ told us the course was clear and we could return.

Raced back with Sian chasing the last team 9 back over the rocky rapids and portages.

We had my whitewater tub boat up to 8.2 kph on the flats, but the mighty Goose and Mari still dropped us.

We caught team 9 about 1 km before the parking lot.

Great weekend with 2 great crews.

Swimming 15:00 [3]

At CP9 we had a wonderful day camping. Coach LD hurled herself into the lake instantly, and I swam out a bit to meet her coming back from one of her numerous swims.

We spent the night and next morning checking in teams and running the Partridge Lake Bistro, serving up hot broth and strong coffee to teams who seemed pretty grateful.

Some racers were strong and cheerful (Leanimal especially so when Weanimal checked her in), others looked pretty wiped out.

We had no cell service and only very limited comms via Inreach or Yellowbrick, so didn't really know how the race unfolded.

Note

Almost forgot- 3 fishing boats of noisy dudes put-putted over to say Hi.
They were having such a "good time" that one fell over and right out of the tin boat. Another laughed so hard he fell out too- with motors running. Almost spilled his case of beer out of the boat. Alcohol, no life jackets, running propellers, what could go wrong? Oh, they shoot too.

Paddlng 2:43:10 [3] 11.87 km (4.4 kph)

Paddle and shove-a-boat out with Tarno back to the road. He couldn't stay until Sunday, and Goose and LD couldn't come in until today.

Paddlng 3:02:39 [2] 11.77 km (3.9 kph) +8m
ahr:98 max:119

Paddle back in with Goose, Coach LD and Weeanimal (Mari Cameron Mueller)

Goose did more portaging of his nice boat while LD and I shoved the boat back up the creek through the rocks for the most part. Weanimal hauled the big food barrel competently and paddled strongly.

WT volunteer weekend: In with Tarno.
Hammer, AG and Almageddon joined us for the first part, then Tarno and I paddled in to the rocky portages, and shoved and dragged the whitewater boat in to set up CP9, then paddled and portaged further in to set up remote unstaffed CP11 and back to camp at CP9.

Some misadventures with wrong portage routes, but some good tough boat-hauling.

Long fun day with my buddy, who loved the nav and challenge.

I feel bad for AO and their rental fleet when the racers come scrambling and stumbling through in the dark.

Pretty River with Tarno.
Felt much better this time, and led most of the way at a better pace than last week, when I was sluggish and dragging behind.

Testing out the big expedition boat in sea kayak mode. It’s meant to haul a lot of gear and is stable when loaded, but pretty wobbly empty- It’s a pig. It does however have a pedal drive option that lets it fly with outriggers. I plan to build one more like Bash’s sleek boat in the next couple of years.
.

We also paddled in to a live concert, and checked out the brig Pathfinder.

Fresh corn, cheese, Partake radlers and coffee on the deck after.

I was cooked after running in the sauna weather, so Bash and I did a road trip towards Owen Sound to check out the Coffin Ridge cidery. I got a swim in at a beach in Leith too.

Pretty River with Tarno
GPS missed the last third.

Tarno’s back from fastpacking at altitude, and had to wait for me on the steep climbs.
Hot and humid- both drenched at the end

Paddlng 5:30:00 [3]

Sunbeam to Canoe Lake.
Mostly short portages, but one small lake between short portages had disappeared so we had to slog around it and turned it into one longer portage.
Strong gusts on Joe Lake were pivoting Mick and J-Lu’s unevenly weighted boat around so the Grantisson boat put them on tow. Canoe lake was really blasting, so we hooked the boys up to our boat there and fought into the wind and waves.

The kids were rock stars, and Bash had them woo-hooing in the big waves.

We made it in just as a huge crack of thunder boomed, and loaded up the cars in dumping rain and more thunder. Turns out there were all sort of storm warnings over Ontario.

Great trip- challenging at times, relaxing at others. Great company in a pandemic-safe way.

Swimming 20:00 [3]

Another camp day- reading, relaxing and swimming.
2 swims. Working on freestyle technique a bit- I found a pull buoy helps a lot.
Feeling a little more relaxed and efficient, but still lifting my head too high.

Sunbeam Sanctuary worth its weight in gold as the sun went down and the mosquitos lined up outside with knives and forks. The outer walls were covered in them. Ha-ha.

Paddlng 2:00:00 [2]

Bash, AD and I checked out a creek option that could save several portages, but we ran our of water and had to walk the boat, before deciding that portaging would be better.

Note

Had a dental appointment with Aubrey. She lost 2 teeth on the trip.

Paddlng 6:00:00 [3]

McIntosh- Grassy Lake- Sunbeam Lake.
Lots of portages between 600m and 1500m, and creeks in between with lots of beaver dams to shove over in water barely deep enough to paddle.

Kinda nice to wade in on a hot day.

Adventuredog ate dozens of deerflies he snapped up in mid air.

Portages were a bit overgrown, and the final one to Sunbeam was a mess with fallen logs and bushwhack bits.
I got caught on a hip-height one with a full 55kg load, and my leg went into a full cramp trying to get out.
(On the run back for more packsI sawed that one.)

Sunbeam lake had some of its best sites destroyed by a tornado, so we settled for one with only 2 good tent sites. We got the Sunbeam Sanctuary rain-and-bug shelter up just in time to hide out a thunderstorm and the associated mosquitos.

We had a swim before dinner and it felt good despite the wind and rain. The SS made for a nice evening- much better than huddling in a tent.

J-Lu caught a small catfish- the first fish ever caught on one of these trips. Made his day!

We had a very dicey tent spot and a poor sleep.
