It was exciting to watch Filippo Ganna break not only the UCI hour record on the track, but also the "Best Human Effort" record set by Chris Boardman in the 90s on the now banned Lotus Superman bike.
He did 56.79 km, a distance that was unthinkable on an upright.
It was a huge amount of power from Ganna, and the team optimized everything from the aero suit to custom helmet to 3D printed frame to drive train that took 17 hours to lube.
I didn't realize that amateur Mathias Konig had quietly set an astounding hour record on an M5 recumbent in Sept 2016 with much less tech behind him. He's not even wearing aero shoe covers.
He beat Ganna's new record by 900M, at 57.6km in one hour from standing start. Sure, it's not UCI legal but neither was Boardman's superbike.
