Orienteering race 6:30:00 [4]
shoes: Montrail GTX

CNYO Snowgaine day 1 with Bash.
We drove down with Phats and LeAnimal, and saw barely a flake of snow the whole way. At the start, the ski trails looked like Palgrave- some hardpack ice and lots of bare ground, so we decided to go with Yaktraks on shoes and leave the skis and snowshoes behind. 15 minutes later we were post-holing to our knees, and regretting the lack of snowshoes. The snowkittens were gliding by on skis. We had to re-plan the route to avoid bushwhacking and maximize running on snowmobile trails, but it was basically a hard slog for the first few hours. I had poles at least, so I could do some towing on trails, but not on the deep post-holing. Luckily, Bash is great at slogging forever and we trucked along OK.

We got behind sched, so we dropped a 40 pointer, but running was faster in the second half and we arrived back early only to discover that they don't record cumulative time, so we could have cleaned the course.
Kudos to MBR (EJ, Tiny and Phats) who cleaned it with 2 hours to spare!
The Kittens also cleaned the course.

Strength (Home gym) 50:00 [2]

Workout #3.

Running (Commute) 23:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Running a little behind, so no extras today. Oh well, time to start tapering anyway for the Snowgaine.

Running (Commute) 23:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Felt strong on the run home in the dark with Bulletdog. Mind you, hard to judge in crunchy snow and ice at night.

Running (Commute +) 29:00 intensity: (24:00 @3) + (5:00 @5)
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Another crisp morning. I had a little extra time, so I threw in a race-pace loop on the icy and hilly pond trail. Sections of the trail are such glare ice that even Bulletdog can't get a grip, and has to run on the snow to the side. Ice screws mandatory.

Running (Commute) 45:00 [1]

Easy jog-hike home with T-dog. Bash traded dogs with me at work.

Running (Commute) 24:00 [4]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Sheesh, running was fast on the ice with my screw-shoes. I'd better add some distance.

Running (Commute +) 48:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Good solid run home. Added extra road and hills.

XC Skiing (Classic) 2:10:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (1:10:00 @4)

Out at Highlands with Bash, in surprisingly good and fast condtions.

We did our own loops. I worked hard on the first trip around every inch of the place (EFI for Phatty Jr) in 1:10. That's about 14-15kph, which is a fast ski for me on classic. Second hour was a bit easier, except when I ran into Tarno and Darryl skating and skied with them for a bit. You know the classic conditions are fast when...

We also met up with VO2max. According to him, he and his friends would ski at about 22-24 kph in these conditions. Why do I mention it? Because his friend and teammate Thomsen just signed up in my category for the Rock and Ice Ultra. Now it's a race for second place.
