Big East River X with Bash.
Bash and I knew we'd be out of our league with the canoe specialists, but luckily we were in the Stock C2 class with my parents' old Sawyer Cruiser and our quaint wooden paddles. This race has multiple categories, like Pro kayak C2 and C1, fast K1,SUP, Stock C2 and Recreational. There were a ton of Epic V8s and 18x boats.
Out the gate some of the Marathon pro boats took off with an insane cadence, and there was a serious wake.
The field split up pretty quickly and we settled in. Paddling upstream we had to pick careful lines to stay out of the current. We leapfrogged another boat in our category, and a slight tailwind gave us dead air and tons of bugs.
We turned around just past Hwy 11, and paddled downstream with a breeze.
We were able to hold off the other team and finish 3rd stock co-ed. We weren't close to second.
The winner in the pro kayak broke the record in 3:35. A couple in a pro canoe broke 4 hours, and they were at least a decade older than us! Lots of fast older paddlers.
Good, well run event.
