Walking (Shoveling) 15:00 [2]

Usually the plow only takes one pass around our sleepy cul de sac, so I scraped out a place for my wife's low riding car to turn around.

As soon as I went back inside and fired up my laptop, the plow came around again. :)

Igor's Maybury course

1 - bobbled, not realizing the first trail was off the map. I should've been able to read the features better
2 - was misreading a little again, saw it south
3 - couldn't remember if we were supposed to do or skip three, so when I didn't see it, I took off
4 - nice fun
5 - knew exactly where to go. I should just do orange at SMOC! :)
6 - ran north of the depression, didn't notice it, had to back track
7 - misjudged distance, got turned around, ended up back at six so I went over the top instead for reliability
8 - awesome fun leg. The little streams are sweet
9 - right where I expected
10 - some trouble getting out of nine, not so white on my line
11 - lost track of my position on the main trail, didn't correctly read turn in, whoops

Great fun, excellent training. Some very nice spots. The abundance of trails would work to its advantage for setting tougher courses - who knows which one you are on, and you'd be jumping all the time. Thanks, Igor!

Snomageddon seems to be on pause right now. Parents got the full effect, something like 7-8" o'er in Wisconsin.

Walking (Shoveling) 15:00 [1]

Biking 49:26 [2] 7.99 mi (9.7 mph) +15m
shoes: The General

Excellent conditions, other than a tendency to lose the front in hardpacked tire grooves, and decreasing visibility near the end as my lenses fogged and accumulated snow.

Easing back into it. Cold at start. My HRM strap is probably around here somewhere....

Elliptical 45:00 [1]

Great right up until the screen went flickered a bunch and then went out. Assembly error or POS? Either way, I'm tiring of things breaking. :(

At least I could delete my G+ and get picasaweb back.

Note

Passed out a dozen odd SMOC flyers last night at Infiterra's clinic. One guy seemed very interested. REI did put the flyer up on the board. I should've gone with color! Also, this particular flyer has no context. Nice to see Cooper and Michele and razz Luke about overtime penalties. I think Luke is still more bitter about his penalty at my night o than I am at being unranked at his race. :-)

Biking 24:08 [2] 3.88 mi (9.6 mph) +4m

I finally have my trainer together and got to try it out. It's from the HTFU collection.

So far so good. Geometry is a bit different than the Dragon. Another inch of stem might be nice. It was also supposed to be fully rigid, but the vendor screwed up and sent the pricier sprung version. I will probably get a rigid fork at some point. The brakes are awful or poorly adjusted or both, but its primary use will be gravel grinding rather than Highland Rec.

Note

Driving back to Illinois tomorrow morning for my laptop will make exercise less likely. And I don't make good food choices on the road. :(

On the upside, an elliptical is in our future, so I can make up for lack of running.

This weekend and next might be rough - on the road, little time to exercise. Hopefully I can cover it with some extra during next week.

Also, I should add some token amount of strength stuff in; I did a handful of lunges the other day and can feel it.

I printed the Maybury map in good old b&w for a run on Sunday.

I managed to pause my Garmin for 40 minutes, so I will update with Barbara's track.

Did 10-1-6-5-4-3-2-1 at Brighton. Map mostly made sense, which felt great. Paced to 6, and was only off the target attack distance by about 30 m over 500 m.

Depression up to 5 is not nearly as steep as Tar Hollow. Almost at the top you feel like you do about 1/3rd of the way up a Tar Hollow hill. Still, it's better than nothing so I see some repeats there in my future, unless I find something more representative.

Easy walk to an Alcatraz documentary. I wanted to watch one of my usual shows on the net since it aired twenty minutes late thanks to a football game, but CBS had already shut it off 15 days later. Lame.

Recovery overeating yesterday perhaps?

So far no shin pain post rogaine. Maybe I can ease back into running a bit. I will be sure to include warmups, try not to overstride, stretch a little after, and drop the extra lbs.

Also time to start O shoe shopping, as my Inov-8s are disintegrating. They've had a hard life and served me well.

Some last minute tips from Rick Waldo pan out as I was able to snag 3rd solo at the Cabin Fever six hour Rogaine at Tar Hollow.

Dominated by a 200' spur/gully system, the map is imposing. I was first to pick up my swag bag and map after a restful night at the Chillicothe Inn. The innkeeper was very concerned I might smoke. I assured him I wouldn't.

I set up a cave in my Escape. Ever ambitious, I plotted a 13 mile route that had two ending loops if I were ahead of schedule.

I started the day by winning the $50 pre race raffle. YES!

Out of the gate I saw the bulk of the north folks pull away. That's my style - let 'em rip and reel them in. I chose an easy first first control, 40. Man, the hills are big!

I lost my beloved Mad Athlete swag water bottle sometime after 52, I think. Boo.

Everything went well until 80. I took the wrong spur, and didn't trust my compass, and fought through thick briars. To relocate I gave up elevation and went to the corner SW and then came back up. Fortunately, by that time, the flag which had been knocked to the ground was back up, so another team signed my passport (punch was missing) and I was back at it.

That was my only nav mistake, so I am happy with that. Still room for improvement, but confidence building. Granted, this terrain is easier for knowing your exact position.

I hit my 2 mph target time checks within minutes each time. Good deal. Even when I started to slow at 3hrs30mins on the giant climbs.

My tactical folly was revealed when I intended to skip a long out and back realizing I was tight on time, but rattled from having briefly lost my compass on a steep hill, I couldn't figure out which monster gully to take so I decided to follow the well-worn snow tracks to the long out and back of 71.

I knew I was in a time crunch so I dropped 74,skipping to 54 and heading for the hash house.

On the way back, I spotted Tony and Mike, but they had a good lead. I snuck up on them a bit, but Mike spotted me and they kicked it. They also had 50 more points thanks to a more point-dense route, so it didn't matter, but it was a fun sprint finish.

Tony and Mike won the team category, so I don't feel too shabby about getting pipped. 2nd solo had the same number of points, so I will be curious what time he or she finished.

Gear carnage was high - the lost water bottle, my INOV-8s are about trashed, and I destroyed a zipper on my pants, nearly lost my compass, whom I will nickname "Bubbles" for its <20° performance.

Next year I will plot the most point-dense 12 mile route off the bat, and then give one bonus loop. That will be more realistic and efficient.

And I will use my stair stepper to train! Michigan has no hills like that, unless you drive to Yankee and run up and down the soup bowl.

Very happy about the day. I could climb no more hills by the end, but look forward to returning and refining my performance. This event is highly recommended.

Packing up the night before the night before was much more relaxing than my standard scramble on Race Day Eve.

On an unrelated note, I may be able to field a coed four person team for the Rage, if all goes well. I should start exercising again.
