Travel

Signal has been noisy lately, but still workable. Challenges seem to be: travel. You are in a unique place, which makes it hard to order something boring like chicken and broccoli or a salad...plus I get really bored driving and want to eat buckets of licorice to pass the time. Also, I need to be better about getting right to sleep instead of browsing meaningless stuff on the internets.

Easy run with dear wife on the North Shore trail, located mysteriously on the north shore of Lake Grapevine. My kind of mtb trail, nothing crazy. Would be fun to explore with more time.

On the way back, we kept hearing voices, and I was trying to guess if it was the world's slowest mountain bikers or the world's slightly fasterest trail runners.

For today.

Sometimes a little slick, and too much traffic. The road has freeways at either end, but despite the posted 25 is the most popular road in town.

Picked up the fifth mile, but had no stamina and it wasn't as fast as I hoped and hurt too much.

Concerns were raised about my ability to bike a good level for WT, which reinforces what I was going to do anyway - add a long sleeve shirt and ten pound back to the trainer rides, while researching how not to carry any weight on the bike.

Continuing my theme of comedy horror...John Dies at the End. They just work out to about the right duration.

I met DoubleM on the west coast for a rare team training event.

We wanted to do the stairs up Mt. Baldhead.

F the police!

We did six reps. All casual people were impressed. :ego boosted: And the view is spectacular.

Then we went down and onto Lake Michigan. Gorgeous!

We had to hike out onto the ice ridge. It was a popular place today; people everywhere.

Then we took a snowy trail back up Mount Baldhead. Thankfully it had been used enough to only have six inches of sinking to hit the harder base. Maria shared her favorite view.

Then we went back down the stairs and did a short jog through a swanky residential art school.

With MRA-approved 7 lb pack.

Speaking of lbs, Valentine's Day saw a couple more indulgent meals, but nothing suggesting a bonus 10000 calories, so I imagine the ~203 is a hitch

W4J met me at Peach Mountain and we ran some streamer tape around to set up a sort of ski o course. At the start, full of energy and enthusiasm, we took separate routes to compare notes. I did the ridge edge to #1, which worked okay. I took the downhill and then up to #2, which was very fun. For #3, I wondered if anyone will try either of the shorter two options, either through the dip or back country.

#4 was my favorite - perfect speed down the hill, just FUN! Also, I saw this while wondering what w4j was up to.

#5 was my least favorite. The trail is pleasant and great, but I saw tracks on the powerline so I thought I would try it . Misery! The tracks weren't great, and there are three gullies, so you can't even bomb the downhills since you'd be stopped. Then climbing out of the gullies was rough. Then the final hill to the main trail was waaaay too fast and steep, and I biffed hard when the track curved.

Last bit of track to #6 was too fast for me! Then I took my skis off to get up the hill. I didn't see Igor's shortcut to #7, looks cool.

Poles and gloves off to streamer #7.

At 7, Barbara was studying her map and I had a great candid shot lined up until she saw me and broke character. Other than that, great company. :)

Not too eventful after that, easy and avoided steeper hills. Nice view of the gravel pit on the way out.

For AR cred, I skied with a 7 lb pack.

Ortonville course setter Ken generously lent me some MSR snowshoes to take on the course.

I parked at my usual spot and fastened them.

I had visions of flying around the course. Then I stepped off the road and into the woods. Even with the shoes, I was still sinking a solid foot. And closer to two feet crossing marshes!

I took that picture and then fell. It's not easy to get up! Then I fell a few more times. That much snow hides things.

Movement was labored and slow. I averaged something like 1.5 mph! At least my nav was doing well at that speed.

I soon realized I couldn't even get half of the points, so I called it for time and went up on Pinnacle Point, which had a great view.

Very fun, but I need more float.

For AR cred, I did this with a 7 lb pack.

Cooper met me for the nickel tour of small trail Maybury xc skiing. We even braved a run across the pond to the island, which was interesting because there was snow...then slush...then ice. Holy moly! I figured conditions would be slow. I was not expecting them to be this slow! No postholing, just soft fluffy snow nearly knee deep most of the time, and sometimes up to the thighs. I have never hiked so slowly in all of my days. And yet, often over 130 bpm! We originally planned to do separate routes and convene at the controls, but at 1 mph and 5 deg, we decided to go cooperatively.

Kind of a rust buster orienteering wise. Wobbly to #1, but mostly accurate. Skipped #2, strong to #3 until near the end, false trail threatened to derail me. Mussed up to #4 a bit, in part I blame not being able to thumb compass with big gloves on. :-) Eventually we were standing at the hill, and then popped into the little feature. Wonderful to #5 and w4j even found the rock at #6 under all of the snow.

Screwed up to #9, I blame poor scale reading and starting on the wrong spur, and I missed a slope tick so I had the trail opposite from reality (I thought low west, high east at first). A great view from the top!

Then across swamps just because you could. Igor, please add this root stock!

Excellent workout, great fun. I should see about snowshoes.....

The Greens have it good. We literally stepped off the porch and started skiing through their yard and into Brighton Rec. Cooper led on one of the routes he is developing, and we played on one of the hills, perfecting our downhill and jumping technique. Then we cut over for a part of the blue loop. Igor's hill bounding technique found favor with everyone.

I am considering that Raccoon Creek might be a good venue to test bottle refilling. I've never tried it, but there is the big creek and several smaller creeks. So access is pretty good. Michigan sweeps solos. Eaton wins again. Mark VT tied my score but finished six minutes earlier for second. I took third, woo woo!

No MRA so the team category was left open.

Track and details when back in Michigan.

~~~~~
I was first again to pick up my map. An interesting layout, it had an odd clump of points in the south. I decided quickly that I could not reasonably expect to get them, so I plotted a sweep minus one of the upper 2/3rds, with a few bail outs. I used 2 mph. (I should probably get more sophisticated since a hill is a huge time suck and you can go fast when you stay high on ridge.)
Michelle Green won the $50 door prize. Woo woo, Michigan already in the money.
Start sounded. Many people tore out of their sub 8:00/mile pace. Not sure why! I went CCW, chasing eventual winner Hail to the Chimp. Minor trail wrong way after 32, but I realized I was on a logging road, not a park road and fixed it quickly.
What I did not fix quickly was a parallel spur. My spidey sense tingled, but I couldn't stop walking, plus there were foot prints. Eventually I got it sorted - I'll have to look at the route. 15 minutes of error?
Then it was smooth sailing again until after leaving 72. I let my guard down, but the features made sense so I was fortunately on the right spur.
I was slightly ahead of pace, so I was encouraged and aimed to do the long out and back to 82. I missed my 82 time mark @ CP 70 by 15 minutes, but decided I could haul if I really needed. It worked out well, even if I had to Stuart Smalley myself up my final big climb towards 50.
I missed my mark for 35 by two minutes, but again decided I could make it work.
Drake White was hot on my heels back to the finish, about 75 m back. I was getting concerned - he often does well, and I have no idea how many he has. I was very glad that he didn't make a push. I would have tried to hold him off, but I was already miserable and spent and it would have been ugly.
Lost to Mark by six minutes, but he's a pretty light fit runner so no shame in that. The overall winner has gone sub 2:40 in the marathon, so that explains why he took off like a gazelle after I saw him make a gear adjustment three hours in.
Looks like a ~13 minute wrong spur error, and Garmin says only 16.5 miles. AP's interpretation sounds cooler.
