Note

Woods look nice here, but the lot isn't very big.

~65 acres including other U of M parcel to the north.

Walking 46:11 [0] 2.25 mi (20:32 / mi) +4m 20:25 / mi

Hammered to make up time, but went out too fast and faded. I think the place to make up time is the sandy bike push hill climb, not in my subdivision. Headache began shortly after takeoff and raged into well into the next session.
6 PM

Biking 1:24:31 intensity: (42:46 @0) + (24:49 @1) + (14:13 @2) + (2:43 @3) 14.9 mi (10.6 mph) +63m

Badlands, much of Blue, and some lessons from Wyatt on pacelines.

Slower average pace in part as we stopped to judge Barbara's spectacular over the bars crash on her nemesis, a sandy Badlands reentrant along a ridge. I paced it out - 3.5 feet from where her front wheel stopped until the pile of Barbara - nothing in between but unblemished sand. I need to ride with a GoPro.

Amateur hour. Lost minute on #2, then 8.5 minutes on 75 second leg to three. Misread ponds and went on west side instead of east. ARGH.

Gave up big start time lead on Alex, caught him at 6, together through 11, other than two minute error to wrong island at 8 - just didn't check my compass and misread marshes. Hoped he would fade, and looked like he was falling off at 12 so I pressed. Clean until 16, too many spurs. Igor wins by five. Always a bridesmaid.

QR, warts and all:

Note

Crooked Lake strikes again - my truck is at Shane's. It wouldn't cool down. Who knows how much I bent the engine as I tried to eek out a few hundred more yards on each run up to 260°F. Then my family picked me up and complained that I smelled. I ran through a swamp! That's why I drove the truck!

PLRA scouting with Mike, John, and Tony.

Some very nice legs. And even the slightly less open woods aren't too bad - I hiked with 7 lbs kitty litter and my paddle and all was passable whilst upright.

Might need to tone down Orange a bit, or the field will be destroyed early and often.

Nice to mix up the directors if for nothing else than Mike picked a spot I wouldn't have, but even though it looks easy I think people might make a few mistakes if they let their guard down and there are lots of small choices along the way and it's just a fun place to go.

ahr:142 max:174 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Ugh, one clipless crash and two nearly so. One of the nearly so incidents (that "hard" option with the really steep drop and then steep climb near a marsh or something), I ended up stepping on the front d and bent it into the tire a bit.

I think I am more of an Island Lake / gravel road kinda guy. I don't have the chops for that. And my AR configured bike rattles too much over all the roots and rocks.

Good practice though.

Raccoongaine finally claims one of possibly two toenails. On the upside, when I accidentally pitched my gaiters, my too-small-after-too-much-AR shoes went with 'em.

I'm not intending to be so weekend warrior in training, but if you get home, do some laundry, change some tires, change some oil, hose your bike off, suddenly it's the end of the day.

Either poison {something} is in the woods now, or I have some sort of medical issue.

Also, about 80% sure I accidentally pitched my gaiters. :(

We all agreed that if this was each other's race pace, we were going to be crushed by the other guy.

Includes 3-4 minutes of chilling on the bridge over the Huron by Kensington Road.

Jeff is looking really strong. He's going to tear it up at the Rage.

Some power hiking in the Badlands. Lost some time climbing a very overgrown ridge and then bushwhacking along the top. Shorts and short sleeves were probably not the best choice! But great scouting for my eventual o meet in this terrain. I think it would be sweet to do night o here; the MD could go up on top one of the big hills and watch 1/2 of the action from afar, just a great view.

Leisurely return home. I thought I would be cold as the temperature was dropping a bit, but it was fine. I got home warm, but then got chilled after a few minutes in the house, so I could enjoy the sensation of being chilled while also being itchy and warm from whatever I ran into.

I should really get in 10k shape so I don't die halfway through!

1 - bobbled, not sure why I didn't continue around, accidentally found #2, then an easy fix.
2. - easy spike, since I was familiar with the terrain.
3. - around the depression, then cut up the hill. Slightly sluggish trying to get a feel for contours and scale, hesitated a couple times
4. - bobbled the exit, should have pushed straight west for trail, lots of fight.
5. - not too bad through the clearings
6 - biggest error, missed low, thought the first pass through the actual reentrant was just undulations. Not sure how I didn't see the diagonal trail and ended up back at the other trail, argh. Oh well, time to fix the mistake and hope it works out in the end.
7. - I love these erosion gullies!
8. - Slightly bobble before I realized 8, not 10, comes after 7. Saw Rick exiting #9
9. - straightforward. Shallow depressions south of line had water, but there's been a lot of rain!
10. Thought about the the small pass through the swamp, but avoided climb
11 - Thought I would be able to see it better, but there was just a bit of green. High line would be better.
12. Used pines, then followed the hill around.
13. Finally caught Rick.
14. Happy with line (except should have swamp crossed at start of leg); fight bearable to #14, no crawling
15. Green shortcut not too bad.
16 - Not sure why I exited 15 so poorly, also was confused by the orange control in the dot ditch. Tried to turn in, but fight was too much. Finally realized I should watch for end of pines and turn in there.
17. Used pines to guide me.
18. Nice GO control. My exit was slightly poor, but tolerable.

Got off to a slow start thanks to some mechanicals on Maria's bike. Trails were a little slick - the woods all had snow. Then Brian broke a chain. Thankfully it was right after my hands warmed up so I could go barehanded to fix it.

We should be ready for a lot of things now - flats, chain issues. Now all we need is a derailleur to die so we can convert something to singlespeed and I think we've got it all covered.

Jeff now rolls on a sweet 23" 29er. Also, he seems really fit.

Those who can't do, teach!

Clean until IN, then I didn't do a good job getting us out of the bowl, and got nervous at the wrong steep hill, so we bailed to two track. Then reset, were almost there, but just stopped up. Seems Jeff's watch overmeasures distance while bushwhacking, and my contour reading could stand to improve.

Not a great confidence boost! I told Maria it was not too late to switch teams.

But we did a few more and they went well. Granted, they were easier, but clean lines, good teamwork.

I will go back there sometime and find you, IN!!!

Transposed the Yankee Springs permanent course points to USGS. Should be interesting - many of the descriptions are not mapped features! (Especially "20 meters south of meadow"!) Snowy and 35 at the start, per my car. I parked at the former bridge. Warmup was 1/4 mile walk to start.

#1 - Bobbled a bit, got sucked along vegetation line too much but eventually recovered. +30?
#2. - straightfoward
#3. - Followed veg line, also this and every other control had people standing on the flag in bright red jackets. I've never been given so many controls in my life.
#4. - Took the erosion gully and ran to the people
#5 - Wasn't sure about the short cut, so I trailed it, but didn't see the depression and nearly over shot
#6. - Mean, just mean Al. My shoes still have gravel in 'em. :-)
#7. - Man that stuff is open right now. That would be a lot tougher in six weeks. Passed a guy who went south.
#8. - Probably better to jump off trail, cut through reentrant. Still had some fight going over the hill.
#9. - Took conservative line while overtaking Joe Chemler and his sweet puppy.
#10. - Veered a bit too much but wanted to avoid powerline. Passed a bunch of people south of control looking for it in the wide reentrant.
#11. - Nice, I haven't been out this way since I learned it was private.
#12 - Tough to find an exit, the clearing looked more runnable than the last time I was there. Miscounted reentrants and saw the trail, backtracked. +30?
#13. - Mark flew by, I tried to hang on, not happening! Bobbled a bit, but found the hills and dropped in.
#14. - Lost 15 seconds confirming that Mark went up a reentrant I wasn't planning to, before running to my intended reentrant. I swore this was mishung. It's in a depression, but NW is a really big depression. Track checks out. Wonder what Igor says.
#15. - Don't think I got the fast split, Mark was crashing hard behind and I got a slow start trying to spot Roddy and the finish table.

Great course, nice woods, would run again.

We eventually got to canoe after Brian and Maria wandered out of the woods. They elected to do red and didn't quite bail for time. Jeff and I wondered what to do for a bit there.

Well, some logistics fiascoes - no one else noticed it was a metro park lot, so 3/4 of our party got "$5 please" notices on our return. At least we did not get in trouble for launching watercraft, which is forbidden from that spot despite being a pretty nice place to launch watercraft.

Lots of wind on the open spots. Hopefully Barbara won't look at the gps track and call me out for violating my safety warnings. At least I was in a group!

I forgot to drop off the SMOC banner when I gave Al the equipment so I biked it over. Slightly uncomfortable since it stuck out high enough to made me ride head down. :-)

I was going to do a little A2 sightseeing, but before I got to Al's place it was already drizzling. Visibility with my o nerd goggles was spotty; a runner on that paved trail out of Bandemer spooked me. Plus my toes got cold, so I bailed at the hospital.

Had to run a red by the hospital when it was clear that after two light cycles, a 30 lb aluminum bike was not going to trigger the inductive sensor.

Accidentally shut the watch off trying to wipe away some rain, but it looks like AP added it all back in there.

I thought I would pick up a few minutes running the Park Lyndon course backwards. Unfortunately, I was dragging a bit, and made a couple mistakes.

Exited 18 wrong, which reminded me to compass check more often. But at least the topography looked all wrong so I corrected soon.

Tried to use bearing to #15, went mostly straight, but slightly wrong. Found the low peninsula and corrected.

Couldn't decide which would turn in to the right reentrant for #14, so ran up the small spur to split the difference.

Hesitated in wrong erosion gully before #13

Should have gone around hill a bit more to 11.

#8 was much easier this way! Exiting was tricky, lots of juking and jiving around scratch. Took trail for novelty.

Couldn't see streamer right away at #3, lost a few seconds. Sprint to the finish.

I see what Igor means about the really big thorns, as I stuck one into my hand, that inspired some bleeding. I really hope it's not still in there. Hard to tell....

Rage crew membership fluctuated a bit in the last few weeks, up to five, then down to three and back up to the final four, the last two occurring this morning.

Everyone allegedly has the same goals - complete the full course, grudgingly accepting an on-time but short course if absolutely necessary.

Trying to carve out some matched up training time in the next six weeks might be the biggest challenge of it all!

Awesome training course and terrain sampler at Park Lyndon courtesy of Igor.

Chuck and Ali's comments suggested horrendous brambles. I grossly overestimated them based on the feedback, but it was not much of a bother, at least compared to my recent Raccoon Creek experience.

#1 - drifted east a bit, tried to figure out which was the hill, didn't picture the big east-west reentrant correctly. No big loss.
#2 - not too much off line..
#3 - bad line choice, probably should have one straight. Bobbled a bit, but then got on line and went alright..
#4 - bobbled, saw other stone piles first, but recognized depression so corrected back. There are a few more rock piles out there.
#5 - I think I would've gotten it with a flag. Surveyed the correct low spot, but didn't see the streamer, peeked east, no, that must be bigger reentrant, doubled back, doh!
#6 - Again missed the streamer, but recognized the small hill and doubled back, doh. Ruined fence just south of 6.
#7 - The "no trespassing" signs start up east of the marked boundary. I was going to start south from the line gully. Had to juke around some green.
#8 - Taking the high ground west of the swamp looked like too much fun no t to try. Nice running along the swamp in general. Got confused by all the ditch action around 8, but then pushed up the reentrant a bit.
#9 - Clearing worked well as a cut to trail by #9..
#10 - Everything made sense, just a little scratchy until that, yes that is a really big trail trail..
#11 - As noted, seemed further up towards the saddle than in the reentrant, but no trouble given the line..
#12 - Got a little confused here, but figured I would push up the shallow wide reentrant and see what happened and there it was..
#13 - Some trouble getting down the hill but otherwise nice terrain..
#14 - Woot, up the line gully and over the top..
#15 - My worst one, had trouble seeing the spur, couldn't figure out what elevation it was on. Caught it right on time, then looked for the flag. Lousy exit, says QR. Should've checked compass earlier.
#16 - nearly tripped over it!.
#17 - Not sure if I it another trail junction, or if they just like random markers. But it didn't match the line gully, so north I went. Probably should've tried to around the spur a bit..
#18 - Not sure why, looked for a depression, then saw it was a hill..
#19 - Everything made sense, spotted first line gully, but knew I wanted second, so went around, and shoved up the hill to try to break one hour..

Thank you, Igor! The map is coming along nicely.
