Duck trails would be fantastic orienteering terrain. Curious what it looks like on USGS. Not curious to try on 3G.

Note

I'm going to pretend that this busy week is really just recovery for some odd high ankle sprain, where I can run, hike, bike, walk up stairs with a load, etc. but forbid that I scratch my ankle or sit cross legged and bump it against the ground...yowser.

Walking 1:15:00 [0] 1.0 mi (1:15:01 / mi)

Mowed yard. Between that and thorough carpet cleaning (vaccuum and steam), and some father/daughter bonding for a sitcom, that took us past 10 pm and ruled out anything more substantial.

Walking 1:00:00 [0] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Idled around the mall. Numbers are made up. I should farm out more home improvement stuff since I stink at it and it takes away too much time for training.

Decided to go bigger. I parked in Northville. The idea was to take it easy, just accumulate some easy, relaxed miles, but some road bike passed me, and then showed weakness on the next hill, so I had to pass him back. Then some guy on a noisy hybrid passed me on a flat section. Then he ran the the red while I waited. But...I saw I was slightly gaining so I reeled him in, then passed him back on a sledding hill climb.

It really helps when people don't know you're racing them.

But, I started to drag a bit towards the end of the Hines part, and when I didn't make the light, he caught back up on the red.

Much more leisurely roll back up Hines. Passed one guy, got passed by a guy with aero bars, then was passed again on the big climb by the disc golf course, but once on the top I caught back up.

Met with Proud Lake supervisor about Adventure Day. They legitimately had 2000 people last year. 800 people off the street, and 1200, I think - brain is a little fuzzy - associated with the partner of Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. They are partnering again this year, so he hopes the numbers will remain high.

SMOC will be located up here, which works for me because that has the zipline, climbing net, etc. Just the sort of adventurous activities we would want to be paired with. They should also have power, so we can either run Catching Features or loop vidoes of orienteering in action.

It looks like it would make an appropriate beginner course area - there's a building, so a pretty solid feature, then the equipment, a trail network, and on my jog I discovered a sweet little proper gully not far at all.

Park supervisor was also very receptive to the idea of us having meets at the park.

So the next steps would include:

* Print up Mark's flyer - can be done on internet since there's time
* Print meet coupons as prizes
* Recruit booth staff since I will be out of town. Ali said she was in, might be nice to get a couple more folks if the numbers are really that high, since a quick intro would be handy
* Make up a passport for the sample course
* Acquire the existing SMOC signage, loaner compasses, flags with punches, etc.
* Make up a usable (not necessarily perfect) map

He said he would show us the area - it's Walled Lake Schools and marked "no tresspassing" (butts up against Proud Lake), so an escort might be handy. I may have to see when my favorite A2-based mapper can duck out of work early so we can catch the supervisor towards the end of his day to get the tour.

Thus inspired, I went and jogged over to the area, trying to capture some of the trails along the way on gps.

Leg felt imperfect, so I called it after an hour of jogging and walked it back. Meant to walk down the middle of the road to get a nice gps anchor, but there was too much traffic so I deviated several times.

One idea I had this weekend was that instead of a 30 control tour de force ~two hour night o, that with the new set of controls and extras, that one could do a three race, 15-20 c [1] night o series, maybe one per month. Do just a 60-75 minute cut off. Mass start, 10-15 minutes of route planning. I could probably set that many in 2-3 hours that afternoon. Something like Maybury, Badlands, and Huron Meadows. Make it a best of, so the "season winner" has the highest total of points from their best two of three races, with more or less consistent scoring between the events. And if I can find outlets at all of the venues, I can do live instant results and serve hot chocolate.

[1] I tended to use ~35 c to set a full meet (W, Y, G, O, R), but I don't think others are using as many, and W need not be e punch.

Walked the meadows trails at Huron Meadows w/ wife and compass, but without pack. I think I got most of them. Then padded a little distance south of Hammel.

Bugs weren't bad, especially given the high swamp levels.

I can't believe the smooth road of Rickett was repaved, and Winans Lake (or the service drive, for that matter!) was left to be a bumpy mess. Someone must know someone!

Night orienteering on Cooper's Brighton streamers, from his deck to his deck. He was very kind and streamered the maze of trails to the start on the Blue loop. I'm not nearly that good.

1 - got a little lucky, I should really be more focused on start. But thought I went around the small hill SW of the 900', so I was ready for the right hill.

2 - some hesitation, worried I was too high up to see the spur

3 - been there, done that. :-)

4 - Thought it was going to be a while, then hit Torn Shirt, figured it would head mostly the right way (I don't know the trail). Tricked by a few small depressions along the way just before, one small one laden with pink ribbons!

5 - Seems like at night, elevation is very helpful. So I climbed the big hill, because I could see "up", then went west to the next ridge

6 - My big error, that blue trail was just too tempting and I didn't remember where it went. I knew I was going "somewhat" NE, but I didn't want to believe my compass. Terrain was flattening out so I figured I would head south, boy that took awhile since I so far north. Relocated from the corner. In hindsight, should have done compass/bearing from the high point where I went NE. Live and learn! There were lots of clues to my error but I managed to rationalize them or ignore them. Better to learn that now that at the next race. :-)

7 - Nicest section of woods, probably my favorite just because it was off trail but easy walking

So much fun and good training!

Apparently I'm a fair weather biker, since the downpour this morning convinced me to drive in instead.

Night o at Brighton Rec on Cooper's streamers w/ USGS.

Very tough; visibility is not very good. Missed #3 on the first pass (also thought I started much farther west), too low down by the swamp. Missed #2, not sure if I got close, and then the light came up so I bailed. Vegetation was very thick. Trails are not on the map, so no relief there.

Good training! Might have to dial back my ambitions and just do this as onesie/twosie things on non bike commute days. I need this practice.

First partial commute to work in forever!

Hines would be wicked fun on skinny tires with drop bars.

No huge errors in preparation. I wish we had lockers in this building, but the shower water is hot so s'all good.

Also I think I could start commuting on random days without staging; I put a test load of clothes in the old Golite VO24 and it was fine for riding.

ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Not surprisingly, the additional temp, traffic, and headwind took a little bit off the pace. Good stuff though.

Monday Jun 10, 2013 #

Note

So the tentative partial bike commute roll out will be:

Today: Stage clothes and supplies for tomorrow. Check!
Tues: 10 mile variant (each way)
Wed: Stage
Thurs: 10 mile

Then next week either Tues and Thurs or M/W/F, gradually going from 2-3 times to closer to 5x, and mixing it up from 10-17 miles each way on some semi-sensible ramp. Add in jogs on off days or shorter bike days, preferably in the squishy grass of Hines or on the trails of Maybury (w/ logger for map development).

Note

SMOC is cleared to join Adventure Day at Proud Lake. Supervisor says there is a "dedicated orienteering course". Huh?! If this is more "boy scouts in a vacuum", maybe we should offer to teach o classes, so people don't get the idea that the sport is pacing around a field!

One of these courses in Saline doesn't even use a map.

I was afraid Maybury might be a mud bath, so I headed over to the luxuriously cushy wood chip trails at Bandemer & Barton.

In case I was wondering why I slowed down towards the end of o season, it's because I lost all running fitness thanks to several months of mostly not ever running.

Streamering for Igor's first visit to the Badlands.

Parked off McCabe for efficiency, starting with #4.

En route to #4, I noticed some of those little "miss dig" type flags, the little 2x2 squares on a small wire as the post. And then I kept noticing them. Essentially my o course was a tour of the obstacle course race set up in the Badlands.

Good news: Permitting should be easy! "Hey, you let people drag tires all over the place, we just want to run around some of the sandy ridges."

I saw so many more places to put flags - the bowls just south of the line from 8-9. The nature of this terrain maybe would work for an o interval - do easy long distance navigating, then pound a bunch of rapid fire stuff up and over and around.

Probably should have done 9-11 to show that swampy area.

#14 was green, I should have noticed that.

#8 was overlooking some obstacle activity. And #16 was marked on some sort of tire hoist, kind of odd.

#17 shows that some options with all the little veg clumps here and there.

#18 was not easy to access from the road undershooting. Little greener than I hoped.

Looks like I placed #12 a little NE of circle, but I was swagging the circle off the satellite, so I forgive myself. Hopefully it wasn't too annoying.

Woot, #2 was about right! I love that little knoll. For a real meet I would put it on the backside, hidden from the trail.

Awesome to be out here with a map. For contour training, it's nice to be able to see the terrain unimpeded!

Bike from take out to put in via Seven Lakes and some of their single track. That trail system is confusing - no signage on the park roads, and no idea which direction bikes are supposed to run. Also, it seems somewhat unused. First part we used looked not so good for O - very green, but towards the end it had some interesting looking bits, small ponds, reentrants with ponds up a the top. Interesting assortment of elevations for the water.

Then back to Holly on some busier roads - probably should have planned that a little better, but no one got run over.

Bloody fantastic training course. Thanks Igor!

Pretty satisfied on the whole. Only really missed #9, just undershot it, but never left the circle.

Did bobble #5, thought it was at the distinct tree at first, ran past the streamer, had to look around a little.

Not sure if I touched correct streamer for #12, but I ran mostly through the circle center, so if that dirty orange one I touched wasn't it, I think I would've found the flag anyway.

Missed a little on #17, thought it looked slightly north side of hill, but I was oddly right on in the terrain, so when I tried the other hill past it, I said no way and went back to look around a bit more.

Some poor trail choices, but all were livable even if not optimal. Very encouraging run.

SOLAR's six control white course from the National Trails Day event at Oakwoods Metropark. I thought about cutting from 4-6, but it was just rough and I've had enough ivy and stuff already. Lost a couple seconds when the control at 6 was not at the end of the pond, but it was where circled, the pond is just not super accurate on USGS, no surprise! Did see some mowed path after 6 that I took back to the parking lot. Fun to do an easy one anyway.
