Leisurely ride with dear brother. He hasn't been on a bike since July, so his lungs were confused. Still made it to our target, Hebron, Illinois, home to a Hoosier-esque winning of the 1952 Illinois High School Basketball tournament, despite an enrollment of just 98 students and before the tournament was broken up by school size.

Plotted out a 4.5 mile loop, but felt good so I added a hill, and then the one road looked a lot closer from the top of the hill, but it all worked out. Did not feel cold with three layers and pants over tri shorts.

Not sure I know what to do with this - I trained with w4j and could still feel my toes the entire time.

Me | Superman (except I got rest and Superman didn't)

1. 2:34 | 2:33
2. 0:56 | 0:38
3. 3:40 | 3:12
4. 5:30 | 3:40 - mussed around, looped through, would have seen flag but less certain. Hardest point??
5. 2:29 | 2:53
6. 1:44 | 2:39
7. 3:14 | 4:14
8. 1:25 | 1:49
9. 1:29 | 1:22 - minor error, looped around and picked up reentrant from south
10. 1:24 | 1:44
11. 2:32 | 2:36 - Barbara's exit from 10 was faster
12. 6:29 | 8:18 - I took left, Barbara took right
13. 2:20 | 2:06 - As penance I took the creek line, but I found a trail and had no green bashing
14. 2:49 | 3:38 - popular skip, versus 7th place runner here
15. 5:28 | 6:22 - most skipped 14
16. 1:00 | 1:20 - rest advantage probably making a big difference now
17. 4:10 | 4:25
18. 2:02 | 2:56
19. 6:03 | 6:24 - Lovely marsh to run through!
20. 2:28 | 2:52 - Barbara hit the clearing first, had me worried I would lose one
21. 0:45 | 1:08 - I had a lot of time to sight the line
22. 2:03 | 2:14 - tried to go south and miss the fence, still found some fence
F. 1:08 | 1:11

Total: 1:03:42 | 1:10:14

Joe ran 1:06:03 with the benefit of a skip but without my five minutes' rest per control and route selection. :-) If given the choice, take five minutes of rest over a skip!!!!!!

Great training, and no resources required. "We don't need no stinkin' streamers" training.

Great training ride with w4j. Maybe one time we'll even have one when you don't freeze your toes off.

Originally thought about including some singletrack, but our many layers slowed travel and we opted to do Silver Hill up to Hell instead.

Not sure why my toes got cold. I think my bike shoes are slightly small; maybe a little bigger so there's some air around them would help. I had neoprene socks and shoe covers.

Returned to Franke Park to hit some trails I hadn't on the bike. I considered withdrawing from the Chill, but a few hills helped boost my temp. Thin knit gloves were a little too thin for 15 deg F until I got nice and warmed up. Explored any intermediate and hard loops offered, and ran over any log piles and skinnies. Franke Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Snuck away from my daughter, who hopefully studied while I was gone. Some afternoon snow rendered the trails slick, and they were twisty (think Maybury) so I kept a modest pace. And considered studs for this season.

I mostly stuck to the easy green - I had no traction to go up hills anyway. Except when the choice was go to straight...or through a creek! Such a highlight!!!! It was just deep enough that when you pedaled to keep your momentum, you got your foot in, which would eventually freeze given the ~28 deg temps. Sooooo worth it!

Hopefully jogging some of it tomorrow, but maybe not the creek crossing...or maybe.............................

Pic and track once back in civilization.

Spiked #57 on night memory no compass o, but then tried to loop around the pond for variety, missed the through trail, and got tangled up in extremely thick crap, and struggled to find an exit.

A few hundred yards below 7/mile on the way back for fun. Perhaps very slightly downhill.

Suprising turnout for the Infiterra clinic last night - over a dozen? The last one at REI was more like 3-4. Some are doing the Chill with their trainer, which is a good fit - fit people with someone to help them through the nav. W4J who is awesome and always prepared brought some flyers so we played up SMOC and passed out some coupons. Trainer will add SMOC events to his 6k person email list, woo woo. He's east side (by my standards), so that means perhaps we should really play up PLRA (and be sure to have a spring meet there) and work up some other east side activities.

Note

I am glad I went with charging the extra $2 for e punch sticks. I did the rough numbers yesterday, and after maps, permit, insurance and snacks, Night O was only very, very slightly positive, which means it was really negative once you give some contribution to the map fund.

We only had 31 starts versus I think 36 last year. I'm not sure what I/The Club am/are doing wrong.

A couple people expressed dismay at the punch fee; not sure if this was largely because they didn't expect it as several of us did not bother to collect this fall. If anyone thought $7 or $12 wasn't good value for the event, then that would be a bit disappointing because if I lined the main Badlands hill route with reflectors and called it a "four mile sand run under the stars", I could've charged $50 and no one would've batted an eye.

I'm wondering about next year - with the second set of equipment, I could do 3 x 1-1.5 hour events once a month if there was sufficient interest, or I could do the single night O again. I also think it would be fun to experiment with a point-to-point format for an evening.

I wonder if Maybury at night would be good - should be few horses, the confusing trail network would be really great, and it's no hunt so perfect for this time of year.

Also, next year I will look for something with working outlets, or see about if my truck+inverter can power the water heater for hot chocolate. I had everything I needed except juice.

This was quite a workout. I much preferred the driveway markers to the electric fence posts.

I should have managed my food and drink better (as in, brought some food and/or drink); I was wiped out. Also a few poor route choices, as least if you were dragging a bike and bike trailer around. I got swamped out at one point.

Didn't use my watch on the other ones I set by vehicle.

Does it count as a spike if you walk right to the spot, but then say, "Here? Really? 100% certain??" and then check around a bit? Sure, why not.

Bike mostly, which is a fun way to get to control sites. Only locked it once, when I knew I was going a long way over to the most challenging (for a setter) site. It will be easier for participants since they can brute force it.

Then tried to get to one, but it was greener than I remembered, so I relocated it. I should have managed my time better in the weeks prior and vetted locations more in advance. New location is a much nicer spot but too damn easy. I should pick my spring venue now and then get it all sorted over the winter, and then be early in the season to avoid getting burned by vegetation.

Hopefully the balance of 24 c can be set tomorrow in ~3.5 hours. I have the advantage of daylight and a truck and a bike.

I got chilled a bit loading my loot and gearing up for the ride. Also, I was pretty lethargic. Is it because I've been eating Halloween candy, not sleeping enough, or because fall back has my system wondering what the heck I'm doing riding until what it thinks is 2 am?

So I picked this place, seemed like it was well off trail, and lidar veg says white, so maybe it would work. Dropped into the point before it, had a glorious ten minute hike cross country out to the spot, and just before I got to it....dagnabbit, there is a big trail that goes right to it. Nuts nuts nuts

Might shorten things up a bit. Hard to guess speed - it will be faster than Huron Meadows in many sections, but it does have a lot more climb and some of the other bits are trickier.

One day I will scout earlier. I should pick my venue for the spring now and start up in December.

I should add that I enjoyed the experience - the map is really great, walking in the woods was great, and I think the sand on the Badlands hills makes them better rogaine training grounds than I remember. I wish I had set up my day to spend more time out there.

Note

First pass shows ~14 km to clear the night o layout, which should mean a two hour cut off will work for even the fastest of runners. Igor was...9 km? to clear in 1:45 last year as my benchmark, but this should be higher speed owing to the terrain. Plus maybe the runners are more clever or brave and the distance could drift down a bit.

Very fun middle distance type course from Joe. Lots of quick direction changes, felt like the middle from Canadian Nationals or the all-middle Pig of a couple years ago. I enjoyed it.

I took my compass off to copy controls, so I put it on the table. Then, without noticing, I moved it to my pocket. So when I charged off to 1, I realized "no compass!" Fudge! It's on the table! It was really in my pocket, but I didn't notice until after 12.

I think this was sort of a good thing - it got me off beelines a bit and back to more reliable feature-to-feature routes that are at my level. If I could strike that balance, woo hoo.

I really noticed on this course a fitness limitation. I just do not have the aerobic capacity to run fast enough when I know where I'm going. Hopefully I can do a sensible build up and get into half shape this winter without getting injured.

Minor mistakes at #4 - didn't notice which swamp, took indistinct trail into northern marsh area before popping back up onto the higher ground.

Miscounted hills to #5, but the long way around wasn't terrible, just slightly inefficient.

Green after 12 was awful - tried to beeline a bit but couldn't punch through - eventually I just crawled. Should have gone north out of 12 and cut across the flat, although Igor said that wasn't perfect, it was hopefully better!

Then 18, just got too aggressive, should have trailed it up a bit. At least my spidey sense activated quickly.

Left trail to F, let's see if it paid off.....

Only one mistake, tried to beeline to a small depression, ended up in wrong one, easily noticed since it lacked an accompanying reentrant. Double checked position once or twice. Very fun sprint, thanks Joe!

Did well 1-2. Overshot 3, misread white vs. clearing. I could pretend that dodging mud on the trail kept my head down rather than scanning.

Rattled by 3, I charged off to a spur for 4, then noticed that it should be a white spur, so I cut over.

Then was pretty clean, a little hesitation descending to #8 looking around rather than running to the middle of the circle.

I think going around the grass in my many cases was faster to 10 and 12.

Screwed up #14, ran through medium green and hit the big trail, but should have had a better approached and noticed the slope change.

Can't find my map or I would QR.

May have the fast finish split, but not by much. Alex was gunning for it!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Punch didn't beep, but unbeknownst to me my stick recorded a time, I restuck the stick, got a beep, and the splits credited that two second leg to the 15-F rather than 14-15. Let the record show I dropped 19 to beat Alex. Ali was 21, but it did not look like she was trying. :)
