Intended as penance for sleeping through the narrow ski window this morning, it ended up as more so than imagined. My throat felt all close-y, my Arthur dog kept crossing in front of cars, and stomach discomfort peaked at the midway mark.

But it is important to remember that it matters not if I hit some arbitrary pace or not, or what my average heart rate was, but rather it matters that I went very slightly farther than w4j.

Installed studded tires at 814.6 miles on bike. Then helped wrangle logs at one of the Amish farms.

Headed out to test the studs. Figured I would be out thirty minutes, then I felt warmer and went seasonal road hunting. Did a bad job finding seasonal roads, but did a great job finding sketchy bridges. Lowest point was taking the wrong seasonal road and ending up...back at the opposite side of sketchy bridge number one, which I had declined to cross on the way out. I looked some more at the deer drag marks, figured I weighed less than man + deer, and made my way.

Not sure if studs worked or roads weren't too bad (some ice), but no near falls, woot woot.

GPS track Sunday.

Registered for Run Like The Dickens 5k in two weeks. Can I crack 21 with smarter pacing and more pain tolerance?

Lakeview 5k Turkey Trot.

Lined up about twenty small children off the line. Very concerned about the course, not even sure if immediate left or straight at the start. But we had a lead car so decided to keep an eye on that.

I spied a couple of xc looking high school age boys, so I figured I would hang onto them and just make sure I was first of the older guys.

Whistle blew, very quickly it was a dozen ten year olds, a woman, a 40s ish man, and me, around 6:40 pace. The kids naturally died off by 400 m and I took the lead by about the third block. This is exciting! I might win, unless those xc boys light it up!

Lead female was hot on my heels. I could easily hear her footsteps, so I wondered if she was letting me do the work. But by halfway, they had faded off, and it was just me and the pace car.

With about a mile to go, I hear clapping too soon after I went through, so at the next corner I peeked to see a young boy 50-100 back. Not enough if he's fit, as I had faded to low 7 pace.

But he had not gained much by the last 800 m, so thought I might be able to hold him off even if he charged.

Then there it was the final two turns, then a short downhill to the finish. Overall winner! Time wasn't blazing, but I'll take it!! Super thrilled.

Met Waldo and Niess May at Placeway for some cold weather paddling. Apparently during hunting season, as we were close to gun fire around the third bend. Glad 2/3rds were wearing blaze orange hats.

Good stuff, but I either need to start bringing toe warmers or get warmer footwear. My hands were comfy in sealskin gloves covered by windproof/waterproof mitten shells.

The entirely of the canoe's exterior above the waterline had a thin layer of ice when we finished!

It looked a lot warmer than it was:

I just had a hallelujah, finding by accident an unmapped feature I was hoping to see, when a loud cracking noise scared me. A big chunk of a big tree broke off and landed where I had been 1-2 minutes earlier. Yikes! Flagging is dangerous business.

Did relocate the water stop for my convenience, tidied up one of the relocations, and the rest of the un surveyed ones were great, some nice woods.

Note

Some comments from one of our newer participants, Melissa, on how to make it more accessible. Her background was her boss (Shane) got her to Get Your Bearings and she was interested in getting better at navigation sports. She approached it as, what do I not know that would maybe not tip the odds of her attendance.

Event itself - How does it work? What is success? (eg., point versus score)
Map - how does it work? How do I use it to do the event?
Compass - how do I use it? Should I buy or rent?
Clothing - what should I wear?
Start - exactly where is it, and how do I get there?
Cost - what is it?
Distance, and over what terrain, with what vegetation
How do you sign up?
Symbol meaning

Then as far as, how does one market an event and get more attention:

social [was much more important to her - after a point to point event, she finished and no one was around]
cheap/cost
clear location
clear directions
goal (finish first, most points)
stated obstacles (hills, swamp, logs)
time
cartoons/colors [verbal comment was something that would get attention if she shared it]
any free stuff/prizes/snacks

It made me think a bit. We have a wonderful product for indoctrinated, jargon-speaking introverts who've been around awhile. What could I/should I do during the off season to improve this? I have wanted to do a video that would be like "attending an o meet", so you briefly show the signs to the start, then what the start would look like, what to wear, getting a map, navigating to a white control, then a yellow control, then an orange control, then a red control, with either chase or helmet cam, or chasing headcam, etc. That would not be hard to do at say, Huron Meadows.

Note

Got some great marketing / general orienteering promotion feedback from one of the younger, newer participants who happens to work on the other side of the building. Also increasingly suspect we have two email lists, and newer folks are not automatically added to the yahoo group list.

Based on the feedback....

comments welcome. Target audience is: People who've never done this before. Discussing with Melissa, it is clear that we use a lot of short hand once we are indoctrinated. Even regarding start locations.

Hopefully I get out and around each lake once per week, and then do something speedier or hillier or orienteeringer on the weekends and all of that is good enough for winter base....

Note

Meet Hosting 101 class approved. Look for it in Jan/Feb. Target audience is intermediate level folks (solid Orange / Green or Red survivor) to do something like a 60 minute score o. More meets = more fun. I love my point to point, but if I can race 2x as often doing some score, I'm fine with that. Our MD pool was looking a bit thin going into fall 2014, maybe this will help.

So....cold...tried pac boots, they were good until the two hour mark. Everything else was workable, maybe I just give up and use toe warmers....

Highlight was the singletrack connector between Proud Lake and Kensington. Trying to find the trail in the open woods on the east side was fun.

Unexpectedly, my closest near crash was not on the singletrack, but on the wide paved trail in Kensington. I did not see the frozen horse crap and that sure knocked my front wheel around.

Great times. Streamered many of the locations. Had to already adjust on #2, which put me behind a bit, then some adjustments later had me off pace (targeted 6 hrs to streamer a 3 hr course), then I got to one section where it was a bit of a mess - circled spot was lame, went to move it to a good spot...which was on top of a hunter blind, then the next flag was within 100' of private property which was a no go, by then my feet had melted enough snow that I figured I'd head back out Saturday or Sunday to finish it up.

Some sections are glorious. Some are not so much - I ripped my pocket a little and lost my marker, so hopefully I remember all of the clues.

So some corrections and redrawing tonight.

I should do this more often, with or without a meet.

I have an interim foot temp solution - forget the too tight clipless bike shoes, and mash my candies with my loose fitting non clipless Roclites, single wool sock in a Meijer bag.

I do not have a solution for how to get to church while avoiding busy roads. Pontiac Trail is sketchy north of 11 Mile.

Ah...putting damp clothes back on to head out into the night....

I tried the shorter way, but still a little Pontiac Trail and Silver Lake isn't the greatest. Plus the dirt is slower despite the distance savings.

Glad to have ridden. Only 40 minutes extra versus driving, and I got over 90 minutes of exercise. And saved $4 in gas, as long as you don't count the cold weather gear I am now researching....

Tempting. Price is right for my minimal use. $250 dry suit Unfortunately no xl until end of year. But maybe the end of this year is busy anyway. And it costs less than the canoe, barely, so that seems more reasonable than the REI options at 4x.

Midweek sneak out for a little o training. Not too much, since I was lazy and just went to Huron Meadows. Good brush fighting to PP, didn't miss by much, just slow, then did wing past the next, should have paced from road, good to LP.

Then planned LP to AD but a well-racked buck was eyeing me up. Instead of scampering, he lowered his head so I GTFO.

After EE lost the trail for a bit. So many downed trees on that most rustic of Huron Meadows trails. Then I thought I should race back and hit 45:00 at my car, self-imposed cutoff, but I missed so I lose one CP.

Note

random o thoughts:

I completely dropped the ball on rolling out facebook ads in 2014. I do have on last event to redeem myself...but a three hour score o w/ 2/3rds orange and up might not be the best intro? BUT we could do something like an 8:30 "nanogaine", where one of our trusty instructors does a very brief intro, and people could run around the silver lake parking lot for 20 minutes to find a few pin punch flags to get tuned up before maps go out.

What events for next year?

One idea was a ~summer solstice "Nitrogaine", an 8 hour rogaine on the shortest night of the year (or nearest Saturday), from 10 pm (sunset around 9:10) until 6 am (sunrise 5:55). Then serve breakfast at the finish. I would enjoy such an activity, and local parks could support eight hours, especially if you are talking at night where people are dropping in a two hour event from 10/km to 15/km. Unless Eaton shows up.

Street scramble might be fun - do it early on a Saturday so no one gets run over, then 1-2 hours, using the auto O map or similar, with trivia at each CP.

Then of course there aren't many ARs in the D anymore, so maybe one of those.

Night O notes

The three arguably most interested in the win were also the least dressed. Igor was in his standard O shirt but with a base layer. Coop was in a single layer. I used one long sleeve tech shirt with a short sleeve tech shirt over it.

Igor and I both taped our laces and wore o gaiters.

Rick didn't think anyone would take the road to/from 40 - he sent a picture of the woods and they are glorious, but as first-time runners we don't know, and when I was peering around the jail, the last bit by the start/finish was a little scruffy looking.

Rick didn't think anyone would shortcut the swamp from 43-73. But Igor has rarely met a swamp he won't cross, and I thought I was under time pressure after the bobble at 41 and the bigger loss at 54 so I had to see if seemed as open as mapped. The go around looked like wet feet anyway and considerably more distance.

I have to measure my errors, but sub 1:40 seems possible with no mistakes and slightly optimized routes.

I tried 3D rerun to do a 2D re run and again, this time with beautifully solid calibration, 2D rerun has the same error that I can't get out, so comparing is useless since people are running >50 m SW of actual the whole time. :( Next step might be to try intentionally miscalibrate it by the error to see if that lines it up, but who's that ambitious. Same thing as Park Lyndon.

~~~
Installed new seat on winter beater. Tried adjusting the brakes, but even at full squeeze it won't lock like my good bike. Bad pads? The guy at the shop loves his low end mech brakes, but these are not confidence inspiring. Tempted to swap to hydro, but if I put hydro and studs on this bike, I'll have so much more in bits than the bike cost that I'd almost have to buy a fancier frame not to feel silly.
Super fun night o set by Rick Waldo on his brand new and awesome PLRA west map. 1:8000, 1 m contours. Nicely chosen control sites - cool features (he clearly knows the woods!) and all open by the controls.
My biggest advantage going in was I knew what I had to do. From hosting the last two years, I know that Igor has done over 5 km/hr at night for the last two years - Rick's 8 km course would be clearable. So I drew a clockwise route through everything, no well-planned optional loops - go big or go home.
Bobbled #41 as Coop and I ran too far. He fixed it faster! Bobbled #54 as I didn't go far enough, free lift from a family I had passed at 37. Behind on time, I took the swamp from 73 to 43, pretty usable, the creek was a little deep (over knee), but it was serious business so on we go.
Also bobbled #49, never thought to punch 72 while I was on top off the hill, should have held a strong bearing to the rock line, not sure why I thought I could read the soft reentrant.
Really screwed up 35, miscounted swamps, ended up back by 36, was really cursing since I knew I had enough time if I didn't do that sort of thing, but luckily the big N/S trail had enough users I could figure out where I was and reattack.
#50 made me a little nervous - my control pickup line was better, rather than in the race pushing strong NE to hit the pond, a little low vis and softer than I guessed, then couldn't find the spur, but did finally pop on pond and followed edge.
First in, all controls, good feeling!
Tried to get 3D rerun to do a 2D rerun of Igor v. Jens at Park Lyndon, since they were approximately even in number of splits won, and had similar times, but repeated efforts couldn't get the map calibrated so it always had them 50 m off. Maybe I'll try again.
Great paddle with w4j. After a fluke training recently where the weather was decent, we've gone back to 30 deg and wind for bike rides, and 54 and rainy for paddles. Which wasn't too bad; I was bare handed, and only picked a slight chill at the turn around, and then a little more so at the finish. Great steering practice as the Huron had a little more kick than usual.
Red @ Park Lyndon, advertised just shy of 8 km.
1 - some hesitation
2 - mostly clean
3 - started to look around wrong first spur, should have paced better
4 - Huh? Looks like it should be on the isthmus, but marked as reentrant. don't see it...still don't see it...ah, on the hill SW of the circle center. is that reentrant on the map? no time to wonder off to five
5 - whoops, easy walking again had me going around the marsh the wrong way, corrected back onto the narrow spur
6 - cut across a tiny bit of swamp, pretty dry, then a bit unsure of position but saw water jugs from aways off
7 - Mostly okay, other than mega rolling r ankle, may need my brace back for Saturday. Ouch ouch. Hurts now unloading vehicle. :(
8 - Probably should have went to trail for as much green avoiding as I did. Chuck helped; saw him getting a drink
9 - XC to the n/s trail, then cut in south of the hill, nice woods, but some unnecessary detour as swamp was dry/runnable.
10 - no trouble, spent some time puzzling 10-11
11 - Probably should have gone S to trail, then S trail to hill, then back WNW to 11, instead west W to trail, S through crap, then followed Oleg, Chuck, etc. to flag
12 - Back the way I came, but cut through was easier.
13 - Used antenna as reference, perfectly in line. Except tall grass was tough running, veering into white woods probably faster or at least easier
14 - down through crap, meant to aim off to east, failed, started to get into odd stuff, was going to head back, spotted flag
15 - aimed off NNW, fought up the hill, east to flag
F - unsure about proximity to private property, went east around, but west run down to low spot was probably a lot more fun! Had to walk up the big hill to the finish. :(
Might be my first red win, bit of a technicality with Igor missing #4. Have to check the splits.
Picked up three flags. Run from Red 15 west of marsh was glorious. Downhill, nicest woods of the day, beautiful dot ditch to follow....fantastic!
Got back, found waiver for missing family (couldn't check vehicle because they wrote the wrong plate number down!), called them at 4:15 pm; they were a bit pissy about flags being up. They continued to be pissy on their arrival. I'm not sure what their strategy was, starting Green at 2:15 with three kids and a dog. Even on the laziest of pick up days, that's not going to work. I hope the head of household checks the website and finds the "courses close at 3 pm" mentioned once or twice. Mental note: Print 3 pm flag pick up on future maps.
I am sooo lucky.
Got off to a late start - it's cold and windy, my house was warm...then being bundled up is like a 2-3 mph hit, plus the crazy headwinds were also a speed hit, so my summer time estimate of ~25 minutes was a bit ambitious. I texted w4j that I was late, so when I turned onto the last major road, I saw some other nut riding a bicycle in these conditions, thought it must be her.
Concentrated too much on the other biker to see...the skunk! I got very close before a panicked swerve towards the other side of the road. But Mr Skunk was gracious and did not spray me. Thank you, skunk man.
Then it was very windy and tiring. We went up Kensington hill and looped back around. I dropped off the fudge and an ankle brace as we parted ways.
I believe I saw a mink just before I entered my sub. Unless there are large water-seeking ferrets on the loose. Well something mink like anyway.
