With slightly reduced urgency, it was a pleasant day.

45 F T shirt was nice enough.

Squandered the afternoon but figured some was better than none, so did Wilcox hill loops.

Well that was unpleasant. Despite warnings, he underdressed, and he had generally lollygagged, so we were behind time and needed to move. I carried the last 800 m and my ear drums are worse for it.

Camber because I only removed the first layer of grit from the trucker.

Easy pace because I wanted to explore and haven’t convinced Eric to take his wife’s unused bike and put gravel tires on it.

Today was walk and run. Project cold acclimation is going well, still okay in a T shirt at 48 unless we stop to put gloves back on too much.

PERSONAL BEST for the run out to Levan. Cool temps and not too many leaves helped. A brutal headwind for the return did not. Only had two drivers take or attempt to take my right of way.

In all of the hubbub we didn't have the 12" bike, so Harvey elected to "jog / run" to school, where we mostly jogged and occasionally ran. It was super fast! Faster than many bike days! It was also a nice time.

Bit rough this morning. Got behind on time, which is never good because his pace is so variable and potentially slow, then two bike changes, much whining about attire, etc. we squeaked in with two minutes to spare. May need to dredge up the winter gear as he was not thrilled with the selections we did at today's temps.

Left earlier enough that the various issues of the day (needing gloves, gloves then being too tight, Halloween decorations too scary) did not need the usual urgency.

Semi taper, went with a short ride full of shenanigans:

*Wheelies
*Unmarked trail exploration
*Steep grassy slopes at the limit of my 30/42 and leg strength and tire grip, probably should do reps one day on some of these
*Found a micro skatepark?! near the train bridge

Got 40% of the way there and my teammate announced he had significant and severe bathroom needs. This was a no man's land (unless the dentist was open?) so I encouraged him to press on steadily. I let him ride the last two street crossings for speed, and as far as I know, crisis averted.

Rode over to Sweet Bikes in Canton, which is literally on the main I-275 route, so 7 miles the long way or I think just 5.5 the shorter way. I need a new chain; they advised also a new cassette so that's on order.

Ran into a guy I've worked with before who always has bike projects.

w/ my homey Eric, will probably try to keep Wed rides going until salt time.

Harvey rode his new Riprock, which went well until I think he tried to stand and slipped off a pedal and took a good crash. Thankfully he was wearing his chin bar. Some nice people were entering their house and overheard his bandaid request and ran in and grabbed one, although he was thankfully just scuffed a little. Poor buddy.

On a happier note, if you are allowed to turn your wheel quite sideways, track stand duration is way up. And I did a monster wheelie down the sidewalk after drop off.

Hines sampler with BNM.

Some road, gravel, single track, pump track, skill course, more single track, accidentally hiking trails but in my defense it's not well marked also it was fun, more single track, more gravel, more road, and beat the train, can't ask for a better time!

If I really hammered, I could see about adding the extra bit to Ann Arbor Trail perhaps for midweek lunch rides. It's not hugely off the end of the other stuff...

Quite possibly a personal best...no clock stopping, 16 miles in one hour. Lights were favorable outbound, slightly less so on the return into the wind and up the light light grade. Woo woo.

Almost silly to be ecstatic about that and then see the better times from 100 miles races are like, 18 mph all day. Wowser. But I will take the progress!

Harvey rode his new 12" bike which allows for easier on/off which should work better for the time being en route to school.

$15 for a Specialized Riprock, which lists at $230. I may need to drop $10 more on a longer seat post, probably can afford it.

Rode confusingly up to Northville, as my 820 in battery saver mode rarely gives turn suggestions, and also gets easily confused and spends most of its life recalculating. I used Apple Maps to free myself from one subdivision.

The trails on the former psychiatric hospital grounds is amusing, would be good to go with slightly more time and loop it perhaps. Not quite flat enough for Harvey, flat by any normal standards, few roots.

Stopped and looked at a 12" bike at a garage sale, not sure Harvey will go for it as it does not have gaudy graphics for some cartoon or superhero.

TTC triple trail challenge once again kicked my butt. I did start off too bad, just light on hill power, had fun at DTE, but when ice cream at the party store perked up Ken, I crashed and was dead. No hill power. Coincidentally it was warm by this point. Had to walk a few hills.

Kathy from the trail funding and maintenance was super nice, she knows BNM and said, “real nice lady”, to which I strongly concurred.

Ken would have been much faster without me. I need more fitness or slower friends hahahahahaha

I had to pick up our number plates for Triple Trail, but didn't plan well enough to ride the 17 miles each way, so I drove down and then popped over to try Hewens Creek.

The Red loop might be perfect for Harvey. Worn in, pancake flat, not many roots.

Yellow has portions that are pretty much grass, so good AR.

Very twisty.

I have no idea how to properly exit to Rolling Hills. At one point I was behind a bunch of abandoned vehicles and boats, not sure if I was supposed to zag around that or what. Seemed sketchy. I will have to look at tracks further.

Started to get under time pressure...25 minutes to eat cereal, last minute glove change, but made it since he rode well other than one ambitious corner attempt where he came in hot but did an early apex and ended up rolling through some grass. Have to work on his cornering lines.

Happy 6000th mile, Disc Trucker! (Does include trainer use)

Buddy is taking Wednesday afternoons off, so I aligned my lunch ride between meetings and he rode the 4-5 miles over, and then has to ride the 4-5 miles back.

Quite a tailwind on the way out, so the trip back up to Plymouth was a bit of a struggle.

Bit of a "bit off more than I could chew." I thought it was closer to 15 miles, it was a little more, I thought I could ride closer to 15 mph, I could not, so more than I intended slightly. No harm done though I think.

Gswede says driving is too expensive at the IRS rate. Meanwhile, I'm over here in Ghosts that would be considered bald if they were tires at not quite 200 miles, at a cost of about $100/pair, so $.50 a mile to walk not including the chub rub destroying my pants and shorts that I would not incur in a car.

Killed myself to try to get close to an hour, ended up at 1:05:04 for Green, which is a PR by 39 seconds but not quite what I had hoped for. Ken was on me the whole time so he could certainly go faster.

Need more top end on the flats, and way snappier climbing. I imagine those are the big losses. Sort of got low on power finishing up yellow, and didn't perk up hugely until the final mile.

One group passed us like nothing on Yellow a half mile before Kensington, I imagine they were well under an hour.

Also maybe a slightly better warmup, and slightly cooler temps, would help.

That and keep riding a bunch and see what happens.

Started well then quickly ran into temperature and fatigue issues. I think we will go glove shopping this weekend; his hands are getting colder than mine.

He also doesn't like when I ride ahead of him, but I'm overprotective and insist on beating him to the corner so I can sort of block the sidewalk and enforce our dismount and walk protocol. I'm less worried about his crashing than about him going without looking. This adds a definite pause.

I'm liking the idea of Technical Tuesdays and Thursdays. This isn't the craziest place, but it zigs zags enough, has a few tiny climbs, and some drops I don't do well.

Sub hour should be possible, with a less exploratory turnaround and a bit more zip on flatter easier areas.

Beautiful weather.

Couldn't quite get the average I wanted. Tried to push for one road and that burned me out for the last bit, good lesson. Also I should peek at wind direction before heading out, as when squeezing in rides, knowing how badly the turn around will be is key to knowing how far down to ride. I went a couple minutes too far, but it was easier to turn around there, so not all bad.

Also not bad off interrupted sleep as there was a visitor at 4 am.

I forgot about the train closure, so I took the slightly longer way out to the first two sections of single track, turnaround at the map at Levan, then back. It might be sub hour if I did the short way both ways and went a little bit faster. I did not go too crazy because I have not ridden much single track this year. I did push a bit near the end to catch a guy who was a couple turns ahead.

Despite the irrelevance of 10 mile paddles for the next race, BNM indulged. 2023 WT prep? Pace not bad for not throwing down.

Camberfixing has new rear rotor and pads, and no longer honks. Suspect was contamination. Also has a new front skewer.

I did the recommended 3-5 minutes drag w/ 2 minutes rest, which was a good workout. Who needs hills. Also it is somewhat warm.

Would have been sub 80 if not for the 6:20 of train. No wonder the cyclist in front of me went for it.

Might be time for a new chain; I went to get on it good to get out in traffic and it jumped.

Poor buddy was doing an okay enough job, until he lost focus and got his bars caught in a hedge and went down. He had been doing well so I didn't enforce pants wearing since it's still hot, so a little knee scuff. I carried him the last two blocks because I am a terrible coddler. He plans to ride home.

Then off the store for some missing seasoning. Great paddle cross training, when you give an exaggerated "WTF" arms to a semi that runs past the stop sign for the sidewalk.

Why sidewalk? Because it's a five lane road (two north, two south) with divided suicide style middle, and NO ONE rides there so there'd be no expectation of ever seeing a car. Plymouth Township is a scourge.

Then back to return the borrowed bike lock to Harvey's bike, which we barely need to lock because his buddy rides a very new Trek compared to his very used Giant.

Wasn't sure how far to go, so instead went north to Northville for exploration and hills. I ended up on some probably seldom-ridden-by-touring-bikes type terrain a little bit, which was fun.

Not sweating didn't matter, adding a backpack took care of that!

Pretty successful, speed is coming up. I need to get my back brake sorted to lengthen my wheelies.
