Erg rowing 45:00 [3]

Grimm #2. I was mostly just glad to get up and get going. 4 am Saturday is going to come way early.

Friday Jan 27, 2012 #

Walking 45:00 [1] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Grimm #1. I sort of liked it. Not the best show ever, but it's fun enough and you get to play "where have I seen them?" since there were people from Prison Break, Caprica & Monk.

I see the hotel has a fitness center, so I should be able to do something on Saturday.

Weights 12:00 [2]

Too frakking lazy to get up. Tried to keep it moving during the brief time permitted. This weekend will be the greater challenge for exercise, since I will be in Fort Wayne. Maybe the hotel will have something.

Biking (trainer) 45:00 [2]

I have to get in shape in case the trails ever freeze up so I can ride my new bike!

Monday Jan 23, 2012 #

Erg rowing 50:00 [1]

I should really dig out the heart rate monitor. I don't think I'm getting into a good zone - it's super easy to just fall back to coasting speed on the rower or the bike.

Orienteering 2:10:00 [1] 7.8 km (16:40 / km)
spiked:11/11c

I had Ed walk my yellow layout (with a sightseeing detour to the radio tower). He did it easily without flags or streamers. I will probably tweak white and yellow again. On our way out, we saw Alex Izzo headed in for training.

Biking (trainer) 50:00 [1]

Skipped Call of Duty, got an extra 90 minutes of sleep, then got on the old mountain bike for a couple Big Bang reruns on the trainer. I also adjusted the cleats and they seemed to unclip more reliably.

Erg rowing 45:00 [3]

Couple of old Big Bang Theories. Tired, cold, and leg still not perfect. :(

Biking (trainer) 55:00 [2]

Trainer w/ a couple of old Big Bang Theories I've never seen.

Leg not 100%. Disconcerting, as the rogaine looms.

Tuesday Jan 17, 2012 #

Weights 30:00 [2]

Basic strength exercises.

Leg feels slightly off after the hike. Not sure why; I've done more beating on it at the last AR and it was fine. We didn't even run that much. I'm going to rest it up for the rogaine and hope everything's okay. I should really slim down. :(

Orienteering 2:50:00 [1] 7.25 mi (23:27 / mi)

Parts of the permanent course at Pontiac.

Mostly, we wanted to revisit two errors made at the 2011 SmartBlast race that used the same points.

RA screwed us up again. We ended up off map. I need to go back as I still don't have the gravel pit residue matched to the contours in my mind. I even messed up exiting the area. We got onto the correct trail, but I didn't realize we were on it!

We also revisited R8. I see what I did now; I intended to take the east-west trail near it right to it, but the head for that is overgrown, so we ended up on another trail. You can also not see the exit of the east-west trail onto the trail along the marsh/pond, which helped contribute to my parallel error.

Lessons learned:

* Need improved distance estimation. We overshoot a lot.
* Less reliance on absolute accuracy of trails - ensure it matches features
* Better attackpoint selection. Twice we took slightly easier routes with less reliable approaches, and we burned by it. So until I get better, I should go with reliability.

Bonus: Despite stepping into a puddle ten minutes in, I still have my toes. they got cold when stationary, but heated up alright on the jog.

Running 8:30 [2] 1.0 mi (8:30 / mi)

I should:

* stop eating like I just did a six hour race when I'm going to do ten minutes of exercise

* start getting my lazy bum up earlier if I want to do a 24 hr race in September

On the upside, this does keep me with a better ramp in than my usual gung ho, get hurt style of running.

I should really do a cycling session on odd days, rowing on evens, and after one of those, tack on some running. That would seem to maximize everything without risk of overdoing it on running.

Speaking of running, I will drop the mountain run and instead do a Rogaine in Ohio with Tony M. instead. Waldo will probably be down there as well.

5 PM

Erg rowing 50:00 [3]

I surprised even my self. Now hopefully I will get up tomorrow and hit the bike.

Tuesday Jan 10, 2012 #

Running 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

4 mph for .25
8 mph for .50

then repeated.

I was upset with myself for sleeping in, but decided to just squeeze in a little something anyway.

Orienteering 1:50:00 [1] 8.0 km (13:45 / km)
spiked:23/24c

Scouting for the Cinco de Mayo SMOC event. It was gorgeous weather, and we saw a few other folks taking advantage of it. Some cool fellas told me about some man made objects I will incorporate. And I gave them the SMOC website - they sounded pretty excited; hopefully we will see them out at some meets.

Jeff and I walked white slowly, about 3k in 50 odd minutes. I let Jeff try to find the points (unflagged), to help see what might be confusing to someone who is not me. I will be making several changes - tweaking the start, and maybe moving one leg around a bit.

Jeff wasn't feeling well, so I somewhat jogged yellow. That seems less troubled than white in its layout, at least until the end. I did that version in about 40 odd minutes for around 4.7k actual.

So I will tweak both, and then rerun them, and probably ask Igor for a consult at some point. :)

Jeff rejoined for a bit, and we started to wander out, but bailed. I will have to go back several more times.

Walking 45:00 [0] 2.2 mi (20:27 / mi)

Potbelly for lunch. It's probably more like 2.7 if you include from my desk to the door.

Erg rowing 50:00 [2]

Ringer...7?

Note

Eyes up. Finding out that the garage door only opened to 5'8" when you're 6'1" is not the nicest thing to happen in an evening.

Running 50:00 [3] 3.25 mi (15:23 / mi)

Reduced intensity hill work.

warmup 0.5 mile with 4 mph / 1% warmup

Half mile sections of:

4 mph / 12%
6 mph / 1%

*3

then a quarter mile 4 mph / 1% cooldown

Erg rowing 50:00 [1]

I am terribly unable to sustain a high effort level rowing. I just sort of stop paying attention, and slow down to my usual lopey cadence. I am really enoying Ringer though.
